Deputy Editorial Director
Media Matters for America -- a progressive, nonprofit research and information center in Washington, D.C., dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media -- seeks a deputy editorial director to assist in overseeing the creation, development, and editing of all editorial content on the organization's website, mediamatters.org. This position reports to the editorial director.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The deputy editorial director will assist the editorial director with the following responsibilities:
Participate in daily editorial meetings and content selection and development;
Supervise researchers throughout the editorial process;
Scrutinize content for accuracy;
Edit content for appropriate focus, structure, accuracy, clarity, and persuasiveness;
Oversee work of web/copy editors;
Consume daily a spectrum of media, from print to TV and radio to blogs.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Commitment to the organization's values and to public interest issues. Broad range of intellectual interests, particularly in the areas of politics, current events, and the media. Excellent verbal, writing, and analytical skills. Ability to debate and to speak persuasively in a charged atmosphere and to exhibit enthusiasm for the work. Graduate/law degree preferred; candidates with a bachelor degree and stellar credentials will be considered. Ten or more years of political, legislative, journalism, legal, or editorial experience. Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends.
