Position: National Press Secretary
Department: Communications
Reports To: Director of Media Relations
Location: Media Matters Headquarters -- Washington, D.C.
Position Summary:
The Press Secretary is a key member of Media Matters' Communications Department and is an integral part of creating the organization's message and disseminating it to members of the media. The successful candidate will have strong oral and written communication skills, have experience working with members of the press on the record, and be adept at short- and long-term strategic planning. A self-starting and results-oriented work style is critical in this role.
Position Responsibilities:
Build and maintain relationships with members of the press
Act as a spokesperson, actively pitching stories to reporters to generate media coverage of Media Matters
Attend daily communications meetings, collaborate with team to generate ideas
Assist in organizing press conferences and other media-related events or speaking opportunities, attend as required
Contribute to and share in accountability for department's strategic planning, goal-setting, and attainment of results
Competencies/Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in communications or relevant academic discipline; five or more years of experience in communications, external relations, or a closely related field
Proven and highly effective organizational and communication skills, both written and oral
Ability to work under tight deadlines
Ability to implement long-term media strategies, as well as react to rapid-response needs from internal and external sources on a daily basis
Commitment to Media Matters mission and ideology in order to effectively promote the organization's goals
Desire to work in a team-based, cooperative environment; good sense of humor and pleasant demeanor a plus
