Position: Research Fellow

Department: Special Projects

Reports To: Director, Special Projects

Location: Media Matters Headquarters - Washington, D.C.

Position Summary:

The Research Fellow is a key member of the Special Projects team, Media Matters' long-term academic research arm. The department conducts quantitative and qualitative research studies and analytic projects concerning various aspects of media coverage. The ideal candidate will have experience in academic research, strong writing and editing skills, and comprehensive/detailed knowledge of current media and politics. Strong critical thinking skills are essential in this position.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Participate in the generation, design, and implementation of research projects analyzing the American media, including, but not limited to, analysis of media content

  • Create and edit reports and articles for publication based on obtained research

  • Comprehensively monitor the media, including newspapers, magazines, blogs, and publishers to remain abreast of the current state of media and politics

  • Assist in managing and organizing the department's workload, including, but not limited to, project time frames, logistical concerns, and intern workflow and scheduling.

Competencies/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, media studies, or relevant academic discipline; master's degree preferred

  • Prior experience in media research required

  • Exceptional written communication skills; ability to articulate and disseminate information clearly and effectively

  • Previous experience using research databases desirable

  • Proficiency using Microsoft Word and Excel; experience with other database management and publishing programs desirable

  • Extensive knowledge of American politics and media required

  • Strong self-motivational, detail-oriented, and analytical skills essential; ability to work both autonomously and as part of a team

  • Commitment to organizational mission and ideology in order to effectively promote and advance the goals of Media Matters.
