Position: Systems Developer

Reports To: Director of Technology

Location: Media Matters Headquarters - Washington, D.C.

Position Summary:

The Systems Developer is a key member of the Media Matters' IT team, responsible for designing, building, and maintaining systems for a high-volume, high-availability website. The developer works in a mod_perl environment using an open-source stack (Linux, Apache 2, PostgreSQL). The position is ideal for someone with an interest in using his or her skills to develop innovative Web features for a growing progressive organization.

Position Responsibilities:

• Design, implement, and maintain features for a database-driven website using an open-source stack (Linux, Apache 2, mod_perl, PostgreSQL.)

• Maintain high-volume, high-availability Linux systems

• Design and maintain highly interactive interfaces for internal video archiving and retrieval system

• Integrate legacy and third-party data with Media Matters systems.

Competencies/Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in a related area preferred

• Experience with mod_perl Web frameworks (HTML::Mason and Catalyst) and open-source database technologies (PostgreSQL preferred)

• Experience configuring and optimizing Unix-like systems; Linux preferred

• Experience with modern JavaScript toolkits (e.g. jQuery)

• Experience with Linux video (MythTV, IVTV, V4L2) a plus

• Ability to rapidly learn new technologies as new requirements emerge

• Ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to lay audiences

• Flexibility with schedule and willingness to be on-call as needed

• Able to manage time effectively and excel in a team-based, participatory environment as well as work autonomously; good sense of humor a plus

• Commitment to the organizational mission and ideology in order to effectively promote and advance the goals of Media Matters
