UPDATE: Malkin "do[es] not think it's out of bounds" to make analogies comparing Obama to Hitler

February 20, 2009 3:04 pm ET by Karl Frisch

You may remember earlier this week when we posted a photo from ProgressNowColorado of right-wing blogger Michelle Malkin posing for a photo with a man holding a sign that uses a circled swastika as the "O" in Obama.  The photo was taken at a Colorado rally against the President's economic recovery plan.

Then there was Malkin's initial defense when she posted a bunch of images using the swastika and Nazi imagery to attack former President Bush and other conservatives (including herself). It’s worth noting that none of the images Malkin posted included prominent progressives -- say, Markos from DailyKos, radio's Ed Schultz or MSNBC's Rachel Maddow -- posing with someone holding a swastika sign.

Well, thanks to our state-based Colorado Media Matters, we now know that Malkin "do[es] not think it’s out of bounds" to make analogies comparing Obama to Hitler.

From Colorado Media Matters:

Conservative author and Fox News contributor Michelle Malkin, appearing as a guest on KHOW's The Caplis & Silverman Show, asserted it is not "out of bounds" to analogize President Obama to Adolf Hitler. During a discussion about a photo taken in Denver of her posing with a person holding a sign showing a circled swastika as the "O" in Obama, she claimed without providing evidence that a progressive group conspired to capture the image and asserted it is "the M.O. of the left" to "play[] the Hitler card." Neither host pointed out that numerous conservative radio hosts -- including some on KHOW and sister station KOA -- have used Hitler or Nazi references and allusions in criticizing Obama and other Democrats.

Listen for yourself...

For those of you who missed the photo, here it is again:

Republican camerapeople and film editors should record Obama's speeches in black and white. Then they can montage that with stock footage from the 1930s with a bit more consistency.

... although, IIRC the NSDAP did film in color every once in a while...

        Don't give them any ideas.

No, actually, they'd still screw it up. They'd try to fit in some special effect or something to overstate their point.

Why do the right wingers never take responsibility for their own actions?  She posed for that picture of her own free will.  How is that a liberal consiracy?

Malkin is a prime example of how media has fallen in this country.

      Hey Malkin,

This liberal thought it out of bounds to call Bush Hitler, and to compare him with Nazis, regardless of what he did. I thought it very inappropriate. I think the analogy is inappropriate just about 100% of the time, unless you're comparing say, another despot with Hitler (Pol Pot, Stalin, etc. etc..).

Comparing any American politician with Hitler is ludicrous. Getting your picture taken with that guy, and not being the better person and saying it's a mistake, is ludicrous as well, as well as your defense of it.

When you try to make an argument that anyone represents Hitler, you immediately lose said argument.

She's just being a hypocrite. Her main example was an ad that moveon didn't even produce. There were many very popular conservatives using the comparison against Obama. The right has a well developed technique of getting outraged on the receiving end while claiming they are justified in dishing it out.

Yes! I am so sick and tired of idiots who keep making the Hitler comparisons. No American politician is like Hitler.

Feel free to make comparisons between ideologies or policies, but stop this "...and that's just like Hitler!" crap. And stop using "clever" modified logos with swastikas while you're at it.

Exactly. I never made comparisons between Bush and Hitler. Cheney and Darth Vadar, sure, but you know, if the shoe fits and all. Just kidding.

Stop using swastikas. Stop using Hitler. Stop using Stalin. Mao. And anyone else who is not even close to what any American politician is.

Ah yes, she is a victim! I wonder what Ann Coulter has to say about that.

What exactly is the similarity between Obama's policies and Nazism under Hitler? Both are trying to prop up the auto industry?
