Howard Kurtz plays dumb about Rush Limbaugh

March 06, 2009 9:00 am ET by Eric Boehlert

Big shock, we know. But today Kurtz transcribes GOP talking points that the White House under no circumstances is allowed to mention Rush Limbaugh's name and that by answering reporters' questions about Limbaugh, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs is "going after private citizens." Because apparently the First Amendment no longer applies to the White House.

Whatever.

But here's where Kurtz plays dumb, as he puffs up Limbaugh:

For nearly two decades, the radio host has masterfully inserted himself into political disputes by pushing the usual boundaries. In last year's Democratic primaries, he tried to derail Obama with what he dubbed Operation Chaos, urging his followers to cross over and vote for Hillary Rodham Clinton.

See, Limbaugh's a master. Except when he's not. Like, oh, I don't know, 12 months ago when he launched a jihad against John McCain, announcing that under no circumstances was he to become the nominee of the Republican Party.

And what did Republican voters nationwide do in response? They promptly ignored Limbaugh's rantings and handed McCain an easy nomination victory.

Yep, that Rush is a real master.

UPDATE: More of the right-wing nonsense (courtesy of Fox News) that Rush Limbaugh should be "free to speak his mind," but that's it's basically illegal for the White House to respond.

Wingnuttery, indeed.

Good lord, who is suggesting that Rush Limbaugh NOT speak his mind? And hasn't he been doing that for, oh, I don't know, 20+ years now anyway? There is no law against Rush saying what he is saying, and if the White House press sec gets asked about Limbaugh, what is he supposed to do? Not respond? Last time I checked, everyone who works in the White House is a citizen of these here United States, and if President Obama himself, wanted to go on a tirade against Limbaugh (he won't, he's got too much class for that if you ask me), there is nothing to stop him really. Nothing at all.

But alas, here we have people sticking up for Limbaugh, when he's more than capable of doing that himself, seeing as he has a radio show on almost every day of the week, and can rant and rave about whatever it is he chooses, and get his word out.

Hasn't been enough of this sort of commentary in the last week. Democrats have had nothing to do with Limbaugh's coup, making the Republican Party his own banana republic, other than to point and laugh, but the media sucks up Republican talking points like a hungry baby, indicative of the politics of their ownership.

My real point in posting, though (we know all this) is to ask for more columns of this type. Just reposting video clips of the idiots in action is entertaining, but it's not commentary. Informed comment trumps rightwing flackery every time. Please keep it up.

This whole ordeal just proves that the Democrats and the WH have the entire GOP wrapped around their pinky fingers.   Just a few blurbs in reference to Drugbaugh, and the entire librul MSM, GOP, and conservative falls apart in a collective meltdown and hissy fit.  Brilliant.

What they always fail to mention is that the republicans led the charge to condemn an ad posted in newspapers by moveon.org, and they did so in Congress with a resolution. Just because it said something that they didn't like. That is a whole lot closer to censorship than ANYTHING that the democrats have done.

Believe me, I have brought up that very point over and over and I always receive blank and confused looks from the righties.  The entire librul media spent weeks attacking moveon.org for that ad and now the librul media is defending Rushbo for his anti-American defeatist remarks.  Hypocrites.

The RNC Chairman criticized Limbaugh, Limbaugh said "kneel!" Steele got down on his knees, placed his palms on the floor, touched his forehead to the floor several times and engaged in what the Chinese Communists called "self-criticism." (Back in the day, anyway. No idea whether they still do that) Oh, but that's all the fault of the Democrats!?!?!

Please, the Republican Party has a problem with Limbaugh, but the problem is self-made. Perhaps Democrats are stirring the pot a bit, but they're just latching on and catching a ride.

Kurtz needs to be reminded that 'Operation Chaos' was a colossal failure. Some 'master', huh Howie?
