Howard Kurtz' gay marriage equivalence

April 27, 2009 2:02 pm ET by Jamison Foser

Howard Kurtz on Perez Hilton's response to Carrie Prejean's gay marriage comments:

KURTZ: Perez told me that her answer was not inclusive because it alienated gay Americans. But by that reasoning, had she said she supported gay marriage, she would have alienated those who believe marriage should be between a man and a woman.

So, Howard Kurtz thinks that alienating gays by denying them the right to get married is equivalent to alienating bigots by allowing gays to get married?

Seems like maybe there's a bit of difference between those two things.

It seems to be what most of our elected officials think.

I think it's risky to characterize those opposed to gay marriage as "bigots." Not all of them are-- some may have genuine problems with the idea.

This is one of many examples of the religious right feeling persecuted for not being able to control other people.

Perez Hilton is a stooge who had no business promoting a political agenda at a beauty pageant.  That is all Kurtz needed to say.  Perez Hilton has once again hijacked the media's attention which is why he asked the question in the first place.  As a supporter of Obama I don't really understand why her response has caused such backlash, he said the same about gay marriage.  But he is the friggin president, not Miss CA.  It seems a bit too much to side with Hilton.  The guy is a joke.  Miss CA could have or should havw said "that is above my pay grade" and the place would have laughed and she may have won.

Agree. Those were set up questions, but the Right should not presume that she would have won anyway.

Agree.  But anyone with political savvy knew the right would use this issue as a way to paint liberalism as intolerant.  Perez is not a liberal, though he obviously shares liberal positions.  The right perfectly turned this into a battle in the culture wars with Perez representing the left and Miss CA representing the right.
