CBS Responds To The Growing Feherty Controversy

May 09, 2009 9:31 pm ET by Media Matters staff

LeslieAnne Wade, CBS Sports senior vice president, communications, issued the following statement in response to CBS golf analyst David Feherty's outrageous comments about Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid:

While outside his work for CBS, David Feherty is a popular humorist, we want to be clear that this column for a Dallas magazine is an unacceptable attempt at humor and is not in any way condoned, endorsed or approved by CBS Sports.

CBS Sports' Feherty Suggests "Any U.S. Soldier" Would Kill Reid and Pelosi

CBS golf analyst Feherty: "[I]f you gave any U.S. soldier a gun with two bullets in it ... there's a good chance that Nancy Pelosi would get shot twice, and Harry Reid and bin Laden would be strangled to death."

Limbaugh fill-in Davis reads Feherty's comments about "any U.S. soldier" killing Pelosi and Reid, says "his words speak enormous volumes"

what a bunch of croc. He works for CBS and he represents CBS, whether sitting on a toilet at home or a microphone in his face at a game. It is not humorous to threaten a US elected official and a leader in Congress. CBS is now forever linked to protecting employees who promote the killing of elected officials in the US.

The CBS response is totally unacceptable. This nutcase Feherty must be fired at once. It's surprising he hasn't been approached by the Secret Service or any other legal authority after his despicable remarks.

This jerk seems to think he's a helluva lot funnier than he really is, but this didn't sound like Feherty trying to be funny. Sounded more like being stupid, without trying.

"wolf kotenberg" - Sir, my sentiments exactly. Well said. What an embarrasment for CBS. Edward R Morrow is spinning in his grave.

"Unacceptable attempt at humor" That description will go down in history in the Cover-Thy-A*s Hall of Fame.

      Orwell be proud.

"Unacceptable attempt at humor" is 100% accurate. CBS is doing nothing wrong unless you think they should be firing him.

Personally I'm sick of firing media figures for individual insensitive comments. I'd much rather fire media figures for being wrong 1000 times.

People know when they're hearing inflammatory rhetoric and can react to it appropriately. They don't know when they're hearing misleading information. The latter is more damaging.

Go to the web site for the company that books Feherty's public appearances, and you'll see the caption under his publicity photo:

      David Feherty

      CBS Golf Analyst

Go to the Penguin Group's list of authors, look up Feherty, and you'll find this:

David Feherty is a mainstay on CBS Sports as an on-course personality and commentator throughout the PGA golf season.

Clearly Feherty can't separate himself from CBS when working on his other endeavors, the same way Randi Rhodes couldn't make mean and nasty comments in a public appearance and defend herself by saying it had nothing to do with her work as a radio show host. A public figure is a public figure, period.

CBS can't weasel out of this, and they need to do the right thing by firing Feherty.

CBS has been weak and wrong since they fired Dan Rather. this just continues there foolishness and is the reason they find there News ratings

If you fired people for misleading information, you'd have to fire the entire staff at FOX. That is if you'd have any left after firing all those who made individual insensitive comments.

I had never heard of Feherty as a humorist. I know why he is not popular. He better stick to his day job. I imagined Feherty would be packing up, for a much higher paying job at Fox News Sports. It may be the classic, fade him out after weeks of public outrage. Like minded people stick together. That is a problem.

How ridiculous listening to uptight folks opine about a very funny fellow who made a mistake...it would be easier to defend his comments if made live versus print, but it's ridiculous to cite a one liner as grounds for firing...lets get rid of all late night comics for all their irreverence....golfers love the guy and enjoy his work...maybe this call to get rid of Feherty are the same critics who thought it sensible to "move the Masters" ala Martha Burke....get a life....

Oh by the way did any of you critics hear our President at the correspondance dinner say former Vice President Chaney's new book is titled "he shoots his enemies and interogates his friends"....are we suppose to fire him too!
