NY Daily News: "Shot at Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi lands CBS golf analyst in hot water"

May 10, 2009 1:18 pm ET by Media Matters staff

The New York Daily News reports:

He said WHAT?!

CBS golf analyst David Feherty sparked outrage after he asserted that U.S. soldiers, given the chance, would kill House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

"If you gave any U.S. soldier a gun with two bullets in it, and he found himself in an elevator with Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Osama Bin Laden, there's a good chance that Nancy Pelosi would get shot twice, and Harry Reid and Bin Laden would be strangled to death," Feherty wrote in a magazine piece.

Pelosi spokesman Nadeam Elshami ripped into Feherty for his eye-popping remarks in the April issue of D magazine, a Dallas publication.

"Such comments are unacceptable and beyond the pale and an insult to our patriotic men and women in uniform," Elshami said.

Jim Manley, a senior communications adviser for Reid, called Feherty's statements "irresponsible."

"I understand that he thought that he was trying to be funny with the article," Manley said. "If that is the case, it was a pretty pathetic attempt at humor."

Feherty's outrageous claim appeared in a first-person piece about how former President George W. Bush's return to Texas might affect Dallas residents.

The comments drew the ire of Washington and media groups after Feherty's column was read on conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh's radio show Friday.

Eric Burns, president of Media Matters, a liberal media watchdog group, called the statements "disgusting."

But Wanda Sykes at the White House Correspondence Dinner basically reiterates the same thing, to President Obama, on the dais:

"You and Joe Biden (VP) go out to have a hamburger together? Who's idea was this, Nancy Pelosi?" <implying that had both been assasinated during said hamburger lunch, Pelosi would ahve assumed the Presidency>

And Ms. Sykes continued on this (rightfully so, freedom of speech riff and very funny) with the President sitting right there, laughing along.

Now some pretentious media uber-left gooballs are making a big deal out of CBS gold analyist Deherty's similar comments?

Give it a rest, libbos. Don't wave the flag or soldiers (who, btw, 8 years post 9/11.. and have always been post Vietnam, voluntary members) when it is convenient.

I share your sentiments Mr. Kotenberg. What this miscreant said is outside the pale. But once he and McManus are put in their place, then what? Will not the remaining sons of Hibernia continue to plague us? Hasn't the likes of O'Reilly, Hannity, Reagan, McCarthy and Cunningham not done enough damage? Can we as liberals finally not come to a solution for this problem? After all what have they ever done for us to help advance the interests of the laborer, the newcomer, the poor, the common man? No, Mr. Kotenberg, all you have to do is turn on your tv or your radio to know what they are--it's that SIMPLE.

Pelosi & Reid leaders? C'mon now. That is really overstating it. Don't you think?

David Feherty has the right to speech, as does everyone in America. What he said did not make sense. A soldier would understand to arrest Bin Laden. Pelosi and Reid would witness, and the soldier would get a commendation. Now that I have cleared that up, for myself, Feherty is a cog in the problem. That is, so last century. The Conservative Resistance, is based on few who want total control, over the masses. The left-right, democracy vs. whatever, are different costumes for the same thing.
To oppress or progress, when viewed objectively, is easy to determine.
