Feherty apologizes for Pelosi, Reid remarks after pressure from Media Matters

May 11, 2009 6:48 am ET by Media Matters staff

From a May 10 Associated Press article:

CBS Sports golf analyst David Feherty apologized Sunday to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid for a morbid joke that went bad in a Dallas magazine.

Feherty, one of the most popular golf analysts for his sharp wit and self-deprecating humor, was among five Dallas residents who wrote for "D Magazine" on former President George W. Bush moving to Dallas.

"From my own experience visiting the troops in the Middle East, I can tell you this though," Feherty wrote toward the end of his column.

"Despite how the conflict has been portrayed by our glorious media, if you gave any U.S. soldier a gun with two bullets in it, and he found himself in an elevator with Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Osama bin Laden, there's a good chance that Nancy Pelosi would get shot twice, and Harry Reid and bin Laden would be strangled to death."

Feherty, a former Ryder Cup player who grew up in Northern Ireland, has gone to Iraq over Thanksgiving the past two years to visit with U.S. troops, and he created a foundation to help wounded soldiers.

"This passage was a metaphor meant to describe how American troops felt about our 43rd president," Feherty said in a statement. "In retrospect, it was inappropriate and unacceptable, and has clearly insulted Speaker Pelosi and Senator Reid, and for that, I apologize. As for our troops, they know I will continue to do as much as I can for them both at home and abroad."

Once again, this reich-wing Anti-American "thinks" he speaks for the troops. He still doesn't get it. Furthermore, this teabagging scum should be apologizing to our troops for aligning them with terrorists by claiming they would enjoying murdering Americans.

Nonetheless, the reich-wing extremist DHS report was absolutely correct. Feherty's murderous hatred towards fellow Americans is proof.

How do you know he's right wing? How is this even conservative misinformation?

I've read a couple of Feherty's books and have listened to him for years and can say this is just what he said. A bad joke. He apologized (even though he didn't need to ) so let it go. That can't be said for all the left wing jokers who said the most hateful things about Bush.

Because we're literate, and the military in no way feels the way Feherty thinks they do. Do you think saying the troops want to kill Democrats is left-wing misinformation?

How do you know he's right wing?

Yeah, you're right, left-wingers are always claiming our troops have a desire to murder Democratic politicians.

          /end snark

That can't be said for all the left wing jokers who said the most hateful things about Bush.

What about all the reich-wing wing jokers who are saying the most hateful things about Obama? Any comment?

Dr. Matt's faux outrage schtick is so obvious. He has to change names at all the different websites he posts his repeated attempts to display 'anger' at his imaginary 'reich-wing' demons.

Dr. Matt harley has no comment on the fact Feherty also joked about wishing the death penalty for pro-lifers, people opposed to gay marriage and footballl players who danced in the endzone. To ponder this would require him to have to reconsider that Feherty was a true reich-winger.

A 'reich-winger' to Dr. Matt harley is anyone who he disagrees with or who says something bad about a Democrat, even though he's made just as hateful comments about both Pelosi and Reid.

            And he wasn't joking.

hoosier's obsession of me schtick is so obvious. hoosier has no comment on Feherty's comparison of our troops to terrorists, but is outraged over his Feherty's despicable comments about pro-lifers, people opposed to gay marriage and footballl players who danced in the endzone. Hypocritical scum.

Classic projection, Dr. Hussein Matt. You obsess daily over reich-wingers, Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck.

You act upset over a stupid comment by some unknown commentator writing in some unknown periodical. No same outrage over a comedian wishing death to a certain radio host you obsess over, even when the President laughs at the bomb of a joke.

Wonder if you'll demand an apology from Wanda Sykes as well?

Or will you still pretend double standards don't exist for you?

There is nothing humerous about killing people. It's ugly and sick. (And that's a non-partisan statement)
It's possible, but I don't recall any lefty wishing death upon even the vile Cheney or the other psychopaths. They need lots of therapy and/or prison time. Lots of exposure to the light of day.

        You've got to be taught
        To hate and fear,
        You've got to be taught
        From year to year,
        It's got to be drummed
        In your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made,
And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade,
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught before it's too late,
Before you are six or seven or eight,
To hate all the people your relatives hate,
You've got to be carefully taught!

Please MMFA staffers do another item on the vicious comments accompanying this article on the Fox News website linked to on Drudge today. I think O'Reilly needs to know exactly what is being said by these "despicable and vile comments" as O'Reilly likes to call them. At least when they are aimed at Republicans. Some favorites ver there are, "as a former military guy, that is excatly how we think" and "I'll bring the ammo".

Feherty's "joke" was in poor taste, egregious, insulting, disgusting, out of character, and disappointing.

However, in this case, I believe that demanding that he be fired is an overreaction.

CBS apologized. Feherty apologized (and it wasn't one of those "if anyone is offended, I'm sorry for that" kind of apologies.

He's a good golf writer. He has a keen wit. He's overcome some personal demons, and this is a first-time transgression. I suggest that we heap scorn upon him for the comment, but ultimately give him a pass, as he's a fine writer.

You know that if someone from the left would have said this it would never have made it out. It would have been ok for them to say that about someone on the right. The way the media leans if it would have come out it would have been made into a big joke and we would have been told to just get over it.

Feherty's comment was in bad taste. I don't find humor that funny when death of a public figure is implied, and Feherty's comment was not only inappropriate but also degrading to his work. I'm a man who tends to view a commentator or sports reporter in a negative light when he says or does something inappropriate (Jim Gray's bombardment of Pete Rose during a World Series broadcast, Rush Limbaugh's comment about Donovan McNabb, etc.)

You should have just reported the sports, Feherty.
