Fox News, please define "gets a pass"

May 11, 2009 6:11 pm ET by Eric Boehlert

Fox News has been among those playing up the story of comedian Wanda Sykes' jabs at Rush Limbaugh during her stand-up routine at the White House Correspondents Association dinner this weekend. News anchor Trace Gallagher wonders why Sykes "gets a pass" for her nasty jabs about Limbaugh being a terrorist with a suspect kidney, while CBS golf analyst David Feherty was forced to apologize for suggesting U.S. soldiers, if given the chance, would killer Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senate Leader Sen. Harry Reid.

Gallagher suggested the treatment of Sykes and Feherty wasn't fair, and that Sykes had gotten off easy in the wake of her controversial statement, yet there had been "a load of outrage," following Feherty's comments.

The comparison doesn't hold up for a number of reasons. First, how, exactly, has Sykes gotten a pass? Her jabs were immediately seized upon by conservatives who have waged a nearly non-stop campaign against her. How does being vilified all over the Internet, in print, as well as on cable TV, constitute getting a pass? And despite Gallagher's misinformation about how Sykes' Limbaugh lines generated big laughs, audible boos were heard inside the hotel ball room, no doubt coming from the Limbaugh supporters. But now for entertainers, getting booed mid-act qualifies as receiving "a pass"?

What's frustrating conservatives, I think, is that golf announced Feherty chose to apologize for his bizarre comments, in which he painted a sort of right-wing militia fantasy of the U.S. military staging a mini, anti-Democratic Party coup inside the nation's capitol by murdering key leaders.

When a network sports announcer paints that kind of public, violent portrait of murdering politicians, he's likely going to have to apologize if he wants to keep his job. But when a comedian at a roast makes jokes about a highly controversial and partisan figure who has made all kinds of hateful, disparaging remarks about the president, that performers not likely going to have to apologize.

That's why the debate about who gets "a pass" remains a pointless one.

The whole issue is that Feherty smeared our soldiers and suggested that they would willingly shoot the Speaker of the House with what he intended to be a joke.

Sykes, who made a crude joke I don't appreciate or think was very funny, and the joke was about a rightwing radio talk show host, not our servicemen, and not the 2nd in line to ascend to the Presidency!

The difference in degree is stunning! The rights inability to differentiate between the attack on our soldier's and Pelosi and the attack on Rush Limbaugh is stunning.

But Feherty wasn't joking-- he was describing the supposed attitude of these soldiers that he loves. He wasn't mocking them, or putting them down, or being satirical about them.

I'm curious about something: from the context, and by connotation, how in the world can anyone say that Feherty was joking in this part of his article? He was being completely heart-felt, the way sports guys always do when they get mawkish and stupid.

He wasn't joking at all, but this phony rationale has been used by the MSM to shield him.

Limbaugh isn't responding to Sykes' Oxycontin crack because he wants that to quietly go away...he doesn't want people talking about his drug addiction and calling more attention to it. And he doesn't want to be put in the position of having to publicly declare that he quit using Oxycontin...because maybe he hasn't.

Well, then the left needs to up the ante on this issue... Ed, Keith, Rachel... are you reading this?

I say put Rush on the grill. And screw what the right thinks. They are not even relevant anymore.

The right can dish it out but it can't take it. Remember when Rush joked about Ted Kennedy dying and naming the Healthcare legislation the Ted Kennedy Memorial Health Care Bill? I don't remember him apologizing for that bit of witty wordplay. He made a tasteless joke about a real life-threatening health issue, and Sykes made a chidlish joke about a non-existent health issue. Big difference. Also the problem with Feherty's stuff was that one really couldn't tell if it was meant as a joke or not. It was in poor taste and in the context it was intended it came across as inflammatory. Sykes was simply poking fun at people, which is what comedians do! Geez!

That's because he wasn't joking at all in that section of the article. He was doing the written equivalent of lowering your voice and making a serious point.

Trace is one of the dimmer bulbs on FOX NEWS CHANNEL, and that is obviously saying something. The comparison is idiotic, and many conservatives absolutely know it. David Feherty joked about the murder of the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives and the Majority Leader of the United States Senate. It wasn't even clear if he was joking in the piece he wrote. Obviously, he also smeared the United States Military by claiming that any soldier would do something horrible like that. Wanda Sykes is a comedian who was speaking at a dinner that is known to have speakers and comedians who make fun of people. While her comments may have been harsh, especially because she brought in the tragedy of 9/11 as part of a joke, she was saying something that was obviously a joke, and was not talking about the murder of a public official, and it was obvious that she was joking when she talked about Rush and his kidneys and the rest. There is no comparison at all.

      THANK YOU.

When I first heard the joke, I laughed about the drug addiction, not being a hijacker. Feherty comments were about soldiers shooting a congresswoman. Sykes' comments were about a talk show entertainer.

What is good for the goose is good for the gander. Sykes joke is stem from Rush past comment on Obama policy and wanting him to fail. Rush wanted the country to fail. That means he want me and you to fail."No one wants to be the sacrifice of many". If it takes Rush kidney to fail for the country to succeed so let it be.
Obama cant say it ,leave it to the experts...
