Another reason not to trust the British press (or Drudge)

May 15, 2009 3:54 pm ET by Eric Boehlert

Because the British press makes stuff up and then Drudge hypes it. It's pretty much like clockwork at this point.

Today's entry, via Drudge:

OZ TV AIRS NEW TORTURE PHOTOS

The link leads to an article in the increasingly unreliable Telegraph of London, which claims in its headline:

New 'prisoner abuse' photographs emerge despite US bid to block publication: Graphic photographs of alleged prisoner abuse, thought to be among up to 2,000 images Barack Obama is trying to prevent from being released, emerged yesterday.

Except that the photo highlighted by the Telegraph was published by Wired 16 months ago. But other than that, great scoop for the Telegraph and Drudge.

Heh! Gotta say, I saw a good Drudge reference in our local paper today. The article was about Speaker Pelosi and her briefing by the CIA:

Good to see the Inquirer getting on this story a month after the Drudge Report isnt it? And Drudge is free. The difference is Drudge is a real news source, not an advocate.

Bwah-hah-hah-hah!!!! I did have to put in about a paragraph's worth of qualification's though. Such as "Yes, online sources are much better than traditional media sources," etc.

If the print media wants to be around and retain their integrity over the internet they can't be a part of the internet sites like Drudge. I'd blame lazy reporting that's common at a lot of newspapers for merely ripping off internet sites. It's why I hate the argument that newspapers need to be saved. Why, when they've just become a part of internet news blogs.

The Telegraph (known by us who don't read the rag as the Torygraph) is the paper of the right wngers who own the UK. It was own by Lord Conrad Black but he is doing what Blago will be doing soon after ripping off the company to buy stuff for himself.

This paper has done a great job in the last two weeks and exposed a lot of the milking of expenses by politicians but it was very interesting in the way it did it. They first exposed those in the Labour government for claiming for things like bathplugs, yougurt and bookcases. The country spent the weekend rightly venting their collective spleens over these so when it came to the tories and their claims for moats around family castles, dug and heated swimming pools and re-turfing helicopter landing pads people were already in high dudgeon and did'nt really focus on it like they should.
