The Pelosi polling lie, please make it stop

May 19, 2009 5:25 pm ET by Eric Boehlert

It's become the blind-leading-the blind at this point, as the The Drudge Report and the Boston Globe have joined with Politico to completely butcher the results from a recent CNN poll. They have completely manufactured the claim that Pelosi's approval ratings have plunged from 51 percent in January of this year, to 39 percent today, with the suggestion that it's all the fault of the CIA briefing scandal.

From the Globe:

The CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey released this afternoon found that the approval of how Pelosi is doing her job as speaker has dropped from 51 percent in January to 46 percent in March to 39 percent now.

From Politico:

The CIA torture briefings story line is taking its toll on Nancy Pelosi's approval ratings. A CNN poll just released shows her approval rating has dropped from 51 percent in mid-January to 39 percent in a poll taken late last week as the CIA controversy was unfolding. Forty-eight percent of those polled "disapprove" of how Pelosi is handling her job as speaker.

And the Drudge headline:

Pelosi's approval rating plummets....

It's simply not true.

First of all, if Pelosi's job approval ratings had fallen from 51 to 39 percent in four months I'm pretty sure CNN would have mentioned that in its write-up. It did not. Instead, what the CNN/Opinion Research poll found, according to CNN's own report, was that in January the approval rating of Congressional Democrats as a whole stood at 51 percent, not Pelosi's personal approval ratings.

Note that according to the CNN/Opinion Research data posted at PollingReport.com, Pelosi's "favorable" rating in a January survey this year was 39 percent. (CNN/Opinion Research did not ask about her "job approval" in January.)

Meaning, based on CNN/Opinion Research polling data, which both Politico and the Globe and Drudge point to, there's simply no evidence that Pelosi's job approval has budged at all this year, let alone plummeted.

Doesn't this mean that her ratings have improved in four months, by their logic?

Her approval ratings are meaningless outside of California's Eighth Congressional district.

Just more cherry picking by mmfa...with carefully parsed words...while ignoring the poll results from the DailyKos.

According to the poll results from DailyKos...since the first of the year Pelosi's favorable rating has dropped from 39 to 34...and her unfavorable rating has risen from 37 to 50.

Here's how DailyKos described their latest polling info:

-- This was not a good media week for Pelosi...we see her take a legitimate seven-point hit on her favorables: down to 34% approval with 50% disapproval. --

"since the first of the year Pelosi's favorable rating has dropped from 39 to 34.and her unfavorable rating has risen from 37 to 50."

Over a period of 5 months, not 1 week. The slide was a whopping three points down in fav and four points up in unfav due to the controversy - as they said, seven points, but it's a misleading number. it might as well not have changed. It's not an 11-point dive down on fav. alone.

No soap, mmfa...unless you're going to ignore the results from DailyKos...which clearly state exactly what you say has been "completely manufactured".

CNN reported a rise in unfavorable ratings of 12 points...and DailyKos backed that up with a rise of 13 points.

Oh where oh where is the spanking due DailyKos for "manufacturing" polling data?

You're completely missing the point. Politico, the Globe and Drudge didn't cite the DailyKos poll. They cited the CNN/Opinion Research in order to prove their case. And the CNN poll doesn't back up their claims.

Dragging the DailyKos poll into it is a non sequitur. But it is amusing to see you relying on DailyKos in order to make your argument.

Here's some more cheery news from DailyKos...

Five out ten people dislike the top two democrats in congress, Reid/Pelosi...and six out of ten dislike the top two republicans in congress McConnell/Boehner.

Gee, wondering why MMFA did not tell us what her job approval rating was then to now, sure because is it still in the bottom, sure at this point below what Bush had on the way out.
Bottom line, she is lying, we know she is lying, she keeps just putting lies on top of lies. I am sure you all are so proud of her.

Who cares? It's irrelevant. All that matters to most people is whether or not she's in their party. It's all about partisanship. If she were a Republican most Dems would be up in arms. But she's a Democrat, so the Reps are up in arms. There are plenty of hypocrites out there, and you're one of them. I, however, try to see past partisanship.
