Schlussel calls Michelle Obama "the new pimp for Obamacare ... [Hillarycare] deja vu with a bigger booty"

June 23, 2009 12:33 pm ET by Media Matters staff

In a June 23 post on her blog, conservative pundit Debbie Schlussel wrote that Michelle Obama is "the new pimp for Obamacare. And it has echoes--very, very scary echoes!--of Hillarycare. It's like deja vu with a bigger booty. Well, since we're comparing with Mrs. Clinton, maybe even that's the same, too." From her post:

I don't know about you, but when I entered the polling booth on Election Day, back in November of last year, Michelle Obama's name wasn't anywhere on my ballot. No mention of her or of Michelle LaVaughn Robinson or of Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Hussein Obama Idi Amin Dada.

But, for some reason, this First Lady is now a policymaker and spokeschick for a number of Obama causes. First, she addressed Department of Homeland Security employees and snubbed ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement). Then, she led cheers for Obama Supreme Court nominee Justice J-Lo a/k/a Sonia From the Block a/k/a So-So a/k/a Sonia Sotmayor.

Now, she's the new pimp for Obamacare. And it has echoes--very, very scary echoes!--of Hillarycare. It's like deja vu with a bigger booty. Well, since we're comparing with Mrs. Clinton, maybe even that's the same, too.

[...]

"My hope is that if I play a role in sort of ringing the bell of prevention and wellness and exercise."

You can best do that by telling your husband to stuff it . . . his absurd, socialist medical plan.

Whatever happened to the good old days . . . when First Ladies knew their place and stuck to reading books to children and visiting libraries and hospitals?

That was a whole lot preferable to unelected spouses who don hijabs for the Islamic world (Mrs. Bush) and pimp socialized medicine (Mrs. Obama).

Memo to the chicks of the White House: You weren't on the ballot. Stay out of policy and stick to the garden, china, and draperies.

Hey Debbie, could you throw anymore negative stereotypes into your blog post about the FLOTUS? Seriously, why do only right wingers feel it is necessary to go after First Ladies? Laura Bush was the most respected member of the Bush White House. I can't recall liberals blasting her for making an innocent comment about the issues of the day. And they wonder why no one takes them seriously except their 30% herd. 30% aint gonna ever get it done again in America. Prepare for the Wilderness, it will get cold out there elected Republicans.

Back when Obama was more popular than Hillary I knew that Michelle would end up being called the new Hillary. The right love to attack women in politics. I mean she's only a lawyer, its not like she has the dazzling resume of Sarah Palin... And the Idi Amin reference. I know you want to say that all black political figures are identical but has your knuckle dragging audience even heard of him?

And these conservatives are the same bunch that crucify ANY personal attacks on ANY conservative women. But somehow in their screwed-up world of double-standards, calling Michelle Obama and Sonia Sotamayor deragatory racial names is fully permissible.

Of course it is. These women disagree with their ideology, so they're of course, fair game. Don't you know how the game is played already?

I find it saddening, that a woman wrote this column, even more so than if a man had written it. Basically, she's telling Michelle Obama to sit down, shut up, and get back in the kitchen and make some pies.

I'm pretty sure that most, if not all first ladies have had agendas that they have pursued over the years (Nancy with saying no to drugs, Laura with literacy, and so on), and all have been cheerleaders for their husbands, because that's what happens in strong marriages, they support their spouse.

This woman is simply atrocious. And the Idi Amin reference? That's just downright awful, considering what Amin did to his own people, as if all black people are the same and all.

And saying bad things about Mrs. Bush for donning a hijab, to, you know, repsect local customs and religion, that's pretty awful as well.

If a liberal media or blogger wrote this, the RNC and GOP leaders would be all over it. Why do libs and the DNC allow this kind of garbage to go unfettered?

Who is this imbecile and why does she deserve the attention of MM? I'm sure there are countless "blogs" that are calling Mrs. Obama much worse rascist names, but I don't care what those people think either. MMFA should stick to influential media and not provide a stage for the truly impaired.

Oh Schlussel gets plenty of publicity and holds some influence among conservative media outlets without MMFA's help. Spend enough time listening to conservative talk radio or watching Fox and you'll find a few references to her. I agree with you that MMFA shouldn't shine its spotlight on anyone who would stand to gain more than he or she might lose from the exposure, but Schlussel has been well known among conservatives for a while now.

"I'm sure there are countless "blogs" that are calling Mrs. Obama much worse rascist names"

She has had numerous columns printed by major news publications. She has also been given her share of appearances on cable crap news outlets. She is not just some blogger.

Oh! I get it. Black women have big butts. HAHAHAHA! That's so funny and not at all racist. Oh and Hillary has a big butt too. HAHAHAHA! Why even bother mentioning policy when you can make fun of someone's appearance?

Schlussel: "Memo to the chicks of the White House: You weren't on the ballot. Stay out of policy and stick to the garden, china, and draperies."

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that Ms. Schlussel didn't have a single word of criticism to offer Carrie Prejean when she ventured into public political discourse. I'll further wager that Ms. Schussel doesn't recognize why then attacking Michelle Obama's involvement in political life is totally hypocritical and outright funny.

During the election, the right-wing professional liars put Michelle on the ballot by refusing to shut up about her.

This message is for Debbie Schlussel and all the other women out there who consider women as no more than the garden, china, and draperies. America voted for change which means the same old trends and stereotypes in the whitehouse has "CHANGED." Unfortunately, there are still women out there like you, who only see themselves as the other half that stands aside, look good and serve food.

Wake up lady these are not the times where women are ignorant to the needs and issues of our country. God made Eve to make Adam complete. If a man need or wants his wife to send a message to his counterparts then respectfully in our roles as women, we should be able to deliver and speak well. When Barack Obama is confident that his wife, Michelle Obama represents him and his family then as wife and First Lady she has done it and does it well.

If the only thing the past presidents of the United States felt their wives could only be good at is garden manicures, home makeovers and pretty food then they have succeeded in getting you and all the other Stedford wives attention. So if change in the whitehouse means that the First Lady Michelle Obama can speak for her husband or take on a task the president of the United States asks of her, then that is what she is going to do and does it very well. Michelle knows her place as wife and First Lady and her role in the whitehouse. There isn't an oath that says the First Lady of America should remain speechless and look good.

Michelle has gained the respect and attention of millions of women because she is smart, intellegent, successful, educated and can convince individuals how great her husband is by delivering a respectful speech to our country gracefully. Hilary Clinton had millions of individuals who chose her as the next President of the United states and it wasn't because she was the next Martha Stewart either.

So take a step back when you decide to talk about a woman that you could never hold a fifteen minute debate on the country's issues. Think about the day your boss tells you that you are only hired because the need you to plan the potlucks or demands that you shouldn't be expressing your opinion to the public about a powerful woman figure when your voice is only useful to "order donuts, water the plants and decide on the best chair and desk for the office." You might want to sue the company and will need a judge who understands women rights and their struggles. I reccomend Sonia Sotmayor.....

I'm not sure that I would knock Martha Stewart in this way, either. She was, and weirdly remains, a powerful woman who built a corporate empire. Might not like her corporate culture, but there's something admirable in her tenacity. No dumb bunny either. And of all of the white collar criminals floating around out there, Martha, a minority of woman in a sea of men, is of whom the example was made. What is at stake and for whom?
