Another reason not to trust the British press

July 08, 2009 8:50 am ET by Eric Boehlert

It tends to make things up. Here's the latest from the Times of London (via Foxnews.com):

Al Gore today compared the battle against climate change with the struggle against the Nazis.

Did Gore actually make reference to "the Nazis"? Not that we can see. He made a reference to Winston Churchill, but was mum about Nazi. (Does that surprise anyone?)

Not that that mattered because it sure made for a better article to suggest Gore did talk about Nazis, right? And of course, right-wing bloggers loved it:

From Hot Air:

Invoking the Nazis is about as hyperbolic as it gets.  What’s next, the aliens from Independence Day?

See, Gore had invoked "the Nazis." Except, of course, that he hadn't.

The Times later cleaned up the article and removed the bogus Nazi reference. The punch line? Right-wing bloggers were indignant that the Times had scrubbed the bogus reference; a reference which Gore never actually made. Tiny hurdles like that never stop right-wing bloggers, why should it stop the Times of London?

The liberal media is biased against reporting things that didn't actually happen.

Sorry boys, but the BBC has some of the most spot on news and especially commentary in the world. It drubs the US in coverage of global crisis and even our own politics.

Hey, Tbone, I agree with you about the value of the BBC, but the article said the "press" which BBC is not.--borealis

After Mika read this headline on Morning Joe, Joe had the good sense (!!!) to ask her to find the text of what Gore actually said.

When Mika read Gore's comments, they all agreed there was no comparison made to the Nazis.

And while we're on this subject, is there any press we should trust?

The Times is part of the murdoch empire, which means that when reporting on some people, like Al Gore, honesty of reporting goes out of the window.

It's only a little better than it's tabloid counterparts the sun and the news of the world in regards that it doesn't have topless bimbos on page three and has a slightly better sports coverage.
