O'Reilly claims media using Goebbels tactics to push "propaganda," left trying to "knock out Judeo-Christian traditions"

July 17, 2009 7:23 am ET by Media Matters staff

From Bill O'Reilly's July 16 column, headlined "Marginalizing Sarah Palin":

With Barack Obama in the White House, the country is facing profound change. America is already on the verge of bankruptcy and federal intrusion into private business, health care, and the environment is unprecedented. The far left is trying to create a huge federal apparatus that will promote income redistribution and "social justice." Also, the left sees a major opportunity to knock out Judeo-Christian traditions, replacing them with a secular philosophy.

In order to accomplish this, the left-wing media is marginalizing people like Sarah Palin who oppose the strategy. Under the guise of hard news reporting, the media is pushing rank propaganda on the citizenry. Dr. Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi propaganda minister, successfully developed this tactic in the 1930's.

Oh, if this were only true. If Sarah was being marginalized then we would see and hear from her less and less, until she finally faded into the sunset.

Palin should have been nothing more than a speck on the horizon months ago.

I get the impression O'Reilly is familiar with Goebbels' theories on propaganda.

First of all, the only one here pushing rank propaganda here is O'Reilly. Sarah Palin is not qualified to be a game show host, let alone Vice President of the United States. She can't even govern Alaska.

Secondly, neither he nor the Pope nor Pat Robertson speak for what is or is not Christianity.

As for a huge federal apparatus, has Mr. O'Reilly already forgotten an entire new division of the federal government called Homeland Security, created by the previous President? Where was his concern about government intrusion into private business, not to mention private e-mails and phone calls then?

I think we could use a little more "Secular Philosophy" in this world. Besides, despite the rantings of the Evangelical Nutbags, this country was founded with a Secular Constitution to be a Secular Nation.

That doesn't mean that Religion is to be "knocked out", only that government policy is not determined by the fantasies and fairy tales of shamans and priests.

Mr. O'Reilly must attend a different Catholic Church than I do. My parish is very active in the Catholic "Social Justice" movement and spends a lot of time and money reaching out to the Hispanic immigrants in our area (a very large group.) The Diocese, one of the most conservative in the country, also spends a lot of time and money talking about and working on Social Justice work, which includes workers rights, most often associated with the Union movement. I would not call my parish "Liberal" all though some would, and I, an admitted Liberal, feel very much at home there, but I know the parish priest would chafe at being labeled a "lefty." Bill should also realize that Evangelical Christians do not recognize him as being a fellow Christian. Governor Palin belongs to a church with some extremist views, and I am sure it includes being anti-Catholic among them. Really, I think it is the Righteous Right who is more likely to be Nazi-like in both their words and actions, not the Left.

I salute the Episcopal Church for standing up to the Neanderthals and recognizing Gay Rights recently. It will, no doubt cost them financially, but it shows there is still hope for Religion joining the Modern Age.

The Episcopal Church was the first to ordain women, thirty years ago. I would like to see the Catholic Church do a little more for Gays, too. I know some parishes do, and there are Gay Catholic communities, but I would like to see more.

Bull O'Really? loves to rant about American's "Judeo-Christian tradition." This is a historical revision created during the 1950's because slow-to-the-draw Christians finally realized they were offending Jewish folks.

Perhaps Bull should go back and actually read the history of the rough times Jewish people had during the founding of America. Or, of course, about Quakers being put to death for being, well, Quakers.

To simplify a bit (for Bull's benefit) most colonies had a state religion. They were not founded for religious freedom, per se. They were founded so those particular people could practice their particular religion. And woe to the poor soul caught in the wrong colony with the wrong religion.

The history-improvished such as Bull try to revise that sorry tale with crap about America's "Judeo-Christian tradition." Here's a quick test: When do you ever hear Jews talk about it?

Bill likes to impress his poorly educated fans with a fancy term like "Judeo-Christian" as no-spin code for "decent folks like you and me" but they must get confused when he uses "Hollywood types" as no-spin code for "cosmopolitan Jews"

Sounds like these Judeo guys are patriots AND pinheads!
