CNN's Kurtz criticizes media birthers -- but stays mum on CNN president's flip-flop

July 26, 2009 2:14 pm ET by Jamison Foser

Howard Kurtz should have listened to me.

Last week, I twice noted that the Washington Post/CNN media critic was oddly silent about CNN's Lou Dobbs and his promotion of the birther nonsense.  Kurtz's silence seemed like an obvious conflict of interest.

Well, by the time Kurtz got around to addressing the issue on today's Reliable Sources, CNN President Jonathan Klein had weighed in, calling Dobbs' birtherism "legitimate" and denouncing Dobbs' critics as "people with a partisan point of view from one extreme." (Klein had earlier indicated that the story was dead and the birthers' claims baseless; his flip-flop raises the question of who is in charge -- Klein or Dobbs.)

On today's Reliable Sources broadcast, Kurtz called Dobbs' birther coverage "ludicrous."  That's great, though long overdue.  But with CNN's president now taking Dobbs' side, there's a bigger story here than Lou Dobbs.  And Howard Kurtz just couldn't bring himself to criticize his boss.

Had Kurtz addressed the Dobbs issue last week, when he should have, he might have been able to get away with not coming back to it.  But by waiting until today, he put himself in a position where he had to either address Klein's comments, or shy away from criticizing the boss.  He chose to keep quiet about Klein. And so we learned from Kurtz's unwillingness to criticize Klein that he likes having the job of media critic more than he likes doing the job of media critic.

Klein probably talked to the titular head of the party, Boss Limbaugh. Listening to Bill Kristol on teevee this morning leads me to think that Boss Limbaugh told him to help propagate the Obama is arrogant meme. I'm waiting to see who's going to be next to associate the words arrogant and Obama. None of these lackeys have what it takes to express how they really feel because they have to stick to the script or risk being ostracized.

These talking heads with a political motive, are so clearly distorting in any form of "information" is pure disinformation and mystification. Lawayers lie for money all the time.... Why is it a surprise these MSM "entertainers" should spout invective like this...? Its profitable. There is no reasonable explanation for this behavior.

I applaud Kurtz' move, and i side with Media Matter in their opinion that he should criticize the President of CNN. Won't happen tho.

In all fairness, I'm not going to expect the guy to call out his boss. He's doing a job, not a public service.

Kurtz may have finally come out from hiding, but somewhat very late in the fray to me. With his choice to be silent, it calls into question his own credibility as "one of the country's foremost media critics." It baffles me to see what he's done to be so highly regarded, because I just don't se it.

How can anyone give any serious thought to a show titled "CNN/Reliable Sources?" The two terms aren't even slightly related.
