Krugman responds to Bill O'Reilly's claim about U.S.-Canadian life expectancy: "I need a drink"

July 29, 2009 8:19 am ET by Media Matters staff

Columnist Paul Krugman's July 28 post on his New York Times blog:

Speechless

Bill O'Reilly explaining that of course America has lower life expectancy than Canada - we have 10 times as many people, so we have 10 times as many deaths.

I need a drink.

Previously:

Fuzzy math: O'Reilly says higher Canadian life expectancy is "to be expected" because "we have 10 times as many people"

Again, we are faced with the uncomfortable truth that the U.S. ranks behind all those countries with "socialized medicine" in life expectancy. Meanwhile the Republitoids, with a straight face, are telling us that we can't adopt a similar system because it will make people die sooner.

      Logic is not their friend.

Where is zbone dickens to explain how the data used to collect the data are skewed therefore, hence, so, they are confoundingly biased with unadjusted unknown covariate effect modifiers which would marginally increase the maximum likelihood estimator and cause an overinflated deviance residual to cause Americans to die!?

Tbone, buddy, don't believe Harley. He's just having a little fun with you so don't go cutting and pasting his explanation into your posts.

Again (and I'll write real slow so you can read it), Tbone... Harley is just funnin' you.

To which Bill Shine commented, "Glenn Beck, I mean, Bill O'Reilly, expressed a personal opinion, er, math which represented his own views, um, calculations, not those of the Fox News Channel. And as with all commentators, uh, mathematicians in the cable news arena, he is given the freedom to express his, um, whatever."
