FoxNews.com opinion piece: "Obama's to Blame for the Birther Movement"

July 30, 2009 7:54 am ET by Media Matters staff

In a July 29 opinion piece posted on FoxNews.com, Tommy De Seno writes that "since no one has shown any proof [Obama] was born in Kenya or elsewhere, it's OK to conclude he was born in Hawaii" but the "Birther movement is Obama's fault for not releasing the records.  I hope the Birthers continue to bite his ankles until he releases the records. He deserves nothing less."

De Seno casts doubt on the birth certificate Obama posted online and speculates on Obama being born in Kenya:

Two birth announcements from Hawaiian local papers show Obama's birth.  The Birthers have a couple of good arguments about them.  First, Hawaii is where Obama's grandparents lived and it's not unusual for grandparents to announce a birth to their friends, even if the grandson lives elsewhere. Also, if Obama's parents lived in Hawaii then moved to Kenya when they birthed him, it wouldn't be unusual to announce the birth in the old neighborhood for friends to see.

The newspaper announcements cut against the Birthers, but they are hearsay documents and don't answer the citizen question any more than his grammar school records prove he is a Muslim. The original Birth Certificate will end it all.

PolitiFact.com of speculation about the legitimacy of Obama's birth notices:

But here's the thing. Newspaper officials he checked with confirmed those notices came from the state Department of Health.

"That's not the kind of stuff a family member calls in and says, 'Hey, can you put this in?'" [Honolulu Advertiser reporter Will] Hoover explained.

Take a second and think about that. In order to phony those notices up, it would have required the complicity of the state Health Department and two independent newspapers - on the off chance this unnamed child might want to one day be president of the United States.

De Seno's piece was promoted by The Fox Nation:

They've moved on since the newspaper announcement was always a fatal and unexplainable blow.
Now they're suggesting that Obama's social insurance number is fake. Apparently they have proof.

I can hardly wait to see what passes for proof and if it comes in a Zip-Lok bag.

Even if Obama could produce a video of his birth, affidavits from the doctors and crumpled original documents these rabid nutjobs would continue to find some conspiracy. It never ends. The bottom line is that these people are crazy. They cannot accept that a black man was elected President. When they screach that they want their country back, what they mean is that want a WHITE country. They are like children without discipline who have been given permission to say whatever thay want, whenever they want.

Call me crazy but I still demand proof that Bush and Cheney weren't responsible for 9/11..as a matter of fact, excuse me while I sip on my tea, ummm good. As a mttaer of fact, I have not seen conclusive proof that Cheney did not plan 9/11. Until then, my brothers in ConLogic land must be considered seers for the nation. THEY KNOW...thier proof...ah, umm, er, well, the just KNOW. This 7 pump chai tea latte is marvelous but I think it is affecting my thinking.

And why come up with the massive conspiracy to cover up his birth when its so much easier to just give birth in Hawaii?

HACK, no big deal about the SS number. I have Cheneys'social security number 666-66-6666. But Satan says Cheney stole his identity.

        Orly---correspondence school attorney.
Charles Lincoln...disbarred in Ca. Tx, Fl...
These two are leading the birfers...keep sending the money.

After this SSN thing goes by, they have pictures of his footprints taken in the hospital in Hawaii...one looks like the foot of a white baby and the other a black baby. This is thier definitive proof. At least thier next definitive proof.
WHAT A JOKE...Real Republicans at work.

Orly Taitz, the grandmother of the birther brigade, was interviewed on "The Colbert Report" the other night. She claimed that president Obama has been using a Social Security number issued to a man who would be 190 years old today.

The first Social Security number was issued in 1936. 73 years ago. That would mean that the 190 year guy who was originally issued that number would have been at least 117 years old when he received that number sometime after November, 1936, when the first number was issued.

Good point! Colbert's great, but even he missed that one.

By the way, it's not impossible to be assigned a used SSN. In my last job, I worked a lot with people's SSNs, and talked with more than one person to whom this happened--and a lot of chaos it caused, too.

I suppose that Taitz thinks that people can request SSNs, like vanity license plates. That would explain her shocking ignorance whenever she mentions the subject.

ah, yes, the birfer movement is the fault of the libruls, the librul media, and the librul president. Brilliant "logic". Of course this makes sense to those with any real ability to accept facts or reality. By next week the teabagging terrorists will be blaming Clinton followed by Carter.

As I view into my Crystal ball I seethe Following discourse...
When asked to produce this information concerning the SSN of the President, the loonies, Orly Taitz especially will use that marvelous correspondent school attorney strategy, "You show me yours I'll show you mine." Sorry, O.T., I don't need to see 'yours' that bad.

If all of this wasn't so laughable/sad, it would be funny.

Gee, that's open-minded of you, De Seno, to give Barack Obama the same "innocent until proven guilty" status you would to any accused criminal. Except that Obama has proved he's a native born American.

It's like saying since no one has shown any proof the sun revolves around the earth, it's OK to conclude Copernicus isn't a liar though you have to admit, the epicyclists makes some good points.

      Another point of hypocrisy:
The Neocons who compose the birthers are also vocal about 'state's rights', yet are making a claim that a valid birth certificate from the state of Hawaii, (excuse me Certification of Live Birth) two announcements from the newspapers (from the Department of Health), and verification by state officials are void.

Its another go round for the Swift Boaters. Much the same as when Kerry supposedly deserved the unsupportable attacks on his medals because of the "reporting for duty" line. The wingnuts have become like an abusive parent that says "why do you make me hit you?"

Whoever told Kerry to say that "Ready for Duty!" line ought to never have a job in politics again. It was horrible.

Now, the Swift Boaters, those guys were complete and utter idiots, and yet, people actually believed them, and STILL defend and believe them now.

Orly Taitz is not a lawyer! Nor is she a dentist!

She is a freak of nature from Russia? who came to America, got her law degree from the equivalent of a cracker jacks box and now thinks that she can make a legal case against a duly elected natural born citizen president of the USA, Constitutional law professor!

Where she lacks a brain, she makes it up with having balls willing enough to stick her nose in an issue that is way to damn big for her.

Unfortunately... having little of the necessary skills to be elevated to the status this idiot has been given is a direct result of just how useless the media is!

This line really bothers me because I saw in James Michener's novel Texas that the front and back blank pages of the family Bible would be used to record births, deaths and marriages. Texas declared these to be legal documents because even though there were no non-family witnesses to the creation of these records, there was simply no reason to doubt that these were true and accurate records. I likewise find it very, very unlikely that someone would report a child born upon a certain date unless they were born on that date. I'm also pretty sure we'd have records of Obama's parents being in Hawaii at the time.

I am baffled why CNN allows this behavior to continue, maybe it's the ratings? If so, CNN will loose all credibility on being the best news to watch. I've always enjoyed watching CNN news but, here late, I am wondering, what is their motive allowing Dobbs speak in such a manner? CNN's other hosts probably feel ashamed that Dobbs is allowed to continue with his "LEFT WING" racist suggestions. It's not just the "birth certificate" but, many other comments and suggestions he has made over the past two years about Obama. Dobbs invite guests on his show, who some appeal to his immoral antics and are just as embarressing. Send Dobbs to FOX news where he would be more than welcomed with those other people. Klein will no doubt find some loophole to protect his "CREDIT RATER", Dobbs. -Who's in charge at CNN anyway?

The only thing weirder than the Birthers are the anti-Birthers, who blame the Birthers for being conspiracy theorists yet actively feed the conspiracy by refusing to call for President Obama to release his birth certificate.

The state official in Hawaii who manages such things has reiterated that there is indeed an original birth certificate on file which would confirm President Obama’s having been born in Hawaii and that she has seen it, but state law won’t allow her to release it unless the president authorizes it.

So what’s the problem here? Release the original and let’s be done with this madness
