Dobbs ratings reportedly take a nose dive since eruption of birther controversy

July 30, 2009 8:40 pm ET by Media Matters staff

From a July 30 New York Observer article:

To wit: According to The Observer's analysis of Nielsen data, in recent weeks, as criticism of Mr. Dobbs has continued to go up, his ratings at CNN have continued to go down.

Mr. Dobbs' first began reporting on Obama birth certificate conspiracy theories on the night of Wednesday, July 15. In the roughly two weeks since then, from July 15 through July 28, Mr. Dobbs' 7 p.m. show on CNN has averaged 653,000 total viewers and 157,000 in the 25-54 demo.

By contrast, during the first two weeks of the month (July 1 to July 14) Mr. Dobbs averaged 771,000 total viewers and 218,000 in the 25-54 demo. In other words, Mr. Dobbs' audience has decreased 15 percent in total viewers and 27 percent in the demo since the start of the controversy.

Arguably, interest in cable news has slumped across the board since early July when attention over Michael Jackson's death was still at a fever pitch.

But, that said, Mr. Dobbs' ratings over the past two weeks, during the height of the "birthers" controversy, are also down significantly compared to his overall numbers during the second quarter of 2009 when he averaged 769,000 total viewers and 222,000 in the 25-54 demo.

In summary, if Mr. Dobbs' affinity for "birthers" is a ratings ploy, it's a pretty ineffective one.

Lou Dobbs, The Clock is ticking on your Career.
One more false step and you may fall off that Pier.
I think you started this Birther Crap to improve your Ratings.
I hope you have finally learned the Danger of Race Baiting.

      Speak truth to power.

I'd bet Dobbs is most likely heading for FOX News. He's toast at CNN and he's a perfect fit for FOX. Can you imagine how nasty he'll be at FOX since he believes left wingers caused him to lose his job at CNN?

I could see Lou teaming up with Hannity...

Hannity the conservative and Lou the liberal. The head of the Ku Klux Klan as the moderate in the middle.

Sadly, filth has an audience in the U.S.A..

I feel sorry for poor Lou - he started on the "illegals" many years ago and through his due-dilligence was able to rally those that felt the same way. But in the end it just inflamed the latino community and they held massive rallies and eventually the whole issued died due to the election, financial crisis, healthcare reform, etc.

Lou was livid when he wasn't able to get legislation to build walls and to kick out all the illegals - now with the "birther" story dying from lack of it being a real story, Lou won't have anything to rail against. Lou is only truly happy when he can grab ahold of a story and beat it to death. What's next for you, Lou?

Poor, sweet, loser Lou - with the flattened down hair and the clicking teeth - we wish we could say we'll miss you when you're gone but as the song goes "How can we miss you if you won't go away?"

Is this decrease seen in the Rachel Maddow Show and Olbermann's show? Or in other CNN shows or in Fox shows? Media Matters doesn't bother to investigate this key data that would provide much needed context.

Is there a reason why the Obama camp will not produce the actual copy and put this to rest? Why let the questions float out there? Instead of calling each other names why not just prove it and put it to rest once and for all? Yeah they showed the copy and the newspaper clippings, why not just show the original? What's the big deal? I just don't get it. If you're the president and have the power to put this issue that's escalated to the point where people are being labled raciest, why not step in and put it to rest?

          I know why.

Because THEY DID THAT ALREADY! The state of Hawaii has confirmed it. 3 times now. What more do you guys want? This is ridiculous already. There is no issue to "put to rest", there never was an issue, just some folks who don't like a black man with a foreign sounding name being President.

Nobody from the Obama camp is calling anyone names, don't know where you imagined that bit of information.

Because by not showing the original (which, by the way, no one but the birthers seems to be fixated on), Obama is eliciting ever-increasing craziness from the birthers. Another six months, and the birthers will be reduced to guttural groans and howls as they repeatedly bash their foreheads on any available flat surface. It's like slo-mo anti-nutcase jujitsu.

He moved around a bit growing up, he probably doesn't personally have an original with all the detail. My wife doesn't have an original (her parents lost it), and when she applied for a copy, she received one that looks almost exactly like Obama's, and it is valid for any government use.

Anyway, you are nuts if you think showing the original long form would make any difference to these loonies. They would claim it was fake anyway.

You know what Chewy? If you'd stop listening to Faux News and Lou Dobbs, you'd know the answer to that. Obama has produced his birth certificate. It has been confirmed as authentic by the State of Hawaii and factcheck.org. I feel sad for you that you could be so uninformed.

So the document they produced is good enough for you guys? Is there a reason why they can't produce the original? Why not put it to rest? Why all the fuss? These are grown men fighting over a simple fact check? I don't get it. Oh yeah, how is "....and the birthers will be reduced to guttural groans and howls as they repeatedly bash their foreheads on any available flat surface. It's like slo-mo anti-nutcase jujitsu....." constructive in any way? The best way to shut these people up is to show them the original. What so hard about that? Now since I asked a question, if you don't have the answer, don't answer it whit something tangent.
"Because THEY DID THAT ALREADY!" No they didn't. I'm talking about the original. Why not just go get the original? Shut everyone up and move on. This country is arguing over the stupidest things. I just don't get it.

Yes, it's good enough, because it has been certified as true. Only a racist would refuse to believe it. Talk about grown men fighting over a simple fact check...

And you listen to? You'd be surprised what I listen to. I try to listen to both sides as much as I can. Yes some of the programs on FOX is little extreme, but so is the other side as well. You can't believe everything you hear but it's all we have. I can't personally fly to Hawaii and look at his papers. If one side says this, the other side should prove it wrong. Give them what they want to shut it up and put it to rest. Non of the "oh there stupid, morons, raciest, . WTF? I don't get you people. I'm just looking for a place where I can have a normal conversation with people regarding the issues with facts. Who cares what I listen to. If what they say isn't true, then tell me what's not true and what is? If you can't you shouldn't say anything at all.

No, you are not. The FACT is that the birth certificate has been prvovided. The TRUTH is that the State of Hawaii has verified it now THREE times. Stop being obtuse and pretending to be fair. You make yourself look silly and ignorant.

That's only news. Everyone's seen that already. What these people are saying is where is the original? The original. What part of that question is unclear to you guys. It's they only way to shut these people up. Everyone's seen the reproduction. That's not what they're asking. They want the original. Give it to them ans shut them up!

Give them his actual document - his actual birth cerificate? Even he does not get to touch it. The State of Hawaii has it. Once again, if you knew what you were talking about you'd already know this. It is old news. You're clearly a partisan proclaiming not to be. And, who should the State of Hawaii give this actual document to? I'm just curious. Should they mail it to you personally and then have it forwarded across the country to every nut who thinks Obama is a foreign national sent to destroy us? And, you think this document would do what to stop the craziness from these people?

Could we just find the person who wrote "African" on the fake birth certificate ? I would like to meet a '90s politically-correct person who has never heard the word NEGRO, which is really what the black race is called. You can also see on the "fake" birth certificate a reverse date of ? June 8 2007. imprinted on the bogus paper. I mean, if Richard Nixon had done this good a job covering this up, he would still be president, but nobody in the Washington Press Corps is going to any length to find the Deep Throat sources on this one. Forget the Constitution. OOPs, I guess that is what the Democrats and Republicans want to do anyway.
