Newsmax.com: "Lou Dobbs Right on Obama Birth Certificate"

August 03, 2009 11:58 am ET by Media Matters staff

From an August 3 Newsmax.com editorial, headlined "Lou Dobbs Right on Obama Birth Certificate":

The Associated Press is wrong and Lou Dobbs is right.

This past weekend, the AP published a story entitled "CNN's Dobbs Under Fire for Hosting 'Birthers'".

The AP began their highly critical story on Dobbs: "He's become a publicity nightmare for CNN, embarrassed his boss and hosted a show that seemed to contradict the network's 'no bias' brand."

And what is Dobbs' "crime?" He has said on air that Obama should release his birth certificate and has had on his show guests who suggested Obama was born outside the U.S.

Dobbs does not believe Obama was born outside the U.S., nor does Newsmax. The evidence indicates he was born in Hawaii. But the indisputable fact is that Obama has not released his birth certificate, which the state of Hawaii issues for all citizens born there. The AP implies that Obama has not released a "long version of his birth certificate." But there is no such thing as a long version of a birth certificate.

Instead, Obama's campaign last year released only his Certification of Live Birth from the state of Hawaii, which is a document that offers a summarized version of the birth certificate. Even state residents born outside the U.S. can get one.

During the 2008 presidential campaign, GOP nominee Sen. John McCain quickly released his birth certificate when liberal bloggers raised questions about his eligibility to be president. McCain was born at a military hospital in Panama.

Obama likewise could put the matter to rest by releasing his actual birth certificate, which would show, among other things, the place of his birth and the doctor who performed the birth procedure.

This information is not provided on the Certification of Live Birth.

As it stands, Obama is the only president in history whose birthplace is unknown to the public - a fact that would be stated on the actual birth certificate. Interestingly, his family has mentioned two different hospitals in Hawaii as the place of birth.

Obama's refusal to release his birth certificate does mean that Obama remains one of America's most mysterious and opaque presidents ever.

We're don't believe he's a foreigner (in Hawaii anyone can get a 'Certificate of Live Birth'), but we're not saying he isn't.

Hawaii is now defined as a "birthplace of unknown"? Really? They are not even trying to put up a good fight now. They are tossing anything at the wall hoping some crackpot loser will start licking it off.

"Even state residents born outside the U.S. can get one." Well, NOW they can, but they couldn't when Obama was born . . . that law has only been in effect for about 20 years AND according to the State of Hawaii, the country of birth would be noted on the birth certificate where Obama's says he was born in Hawaii.

        Bad argument.

      And what is Dobbs' "crime?"

Point of order--no one said "crime." Newsmax' use of quotation marks for a non-quotation immediately calls their credibility into question.

But the indisputable fact is that Obama has not released his birth certificate,

Because he doesn't have it. The state of Hawaii has it. What's more, people who actually have access to it have certified that it's genuine. This "indisputable fact" is not only disputable, but refuted.

The AP implies that Obama has not released a "long version of his birth certificate." But there is no such thing as a long version of a birth certificate.

No, Dobbs is the one who has made that implication, and he's done it many times. Don't blame AP for Dobbs' fantasies.

Instead, Obama's campaign last year released only his Certification of Live Birth from the state of Hawaii, which is a document that offers a summarized version of the birth certificate.

It's "only" his CLB because that's all he had (see note above).

During the 2008 presidential campaign, GOP nominee Sen. John McCain quickly released his birth certificate when liberal bloggers raised questions about his eligibility to be president. McCain was born at a military hospital in Panama.

This shows a fundamental difference between the right and the left. The left raised an issue, were shown the facts, and dropped it, never referencing it again. The right raised this issue a year ago, were shown the facts, and refuse to accept them.

Obama likewise could put the matter to rest by releasing his actual birth certificate, which would show, among other things, the place of his birth and the doctor who performed the birth procedure.

Talk about your dead horses. Obama can't release what he doesn't have. And, as has been pointed out by many, if he did release it, it wouldn't satisfy the birthers, anyway.

This information is not provided on the Certification of Live Birth.

Take it up with the State of Hawaii, then. Oh wait, others already have, and they prove Obama's legitimate citizenship. Never mind.

As it stands, Obama is the only president in history whose birthplace is unknown to the public

Wrong. Jackson was probably born in a ship bound for America from Ireland, enabling both Carolinas to claim him. Also, it's entirely possible that Arthur was born just over the border in Canada. One of the last things he did before he died was that he destroyed his personal papers, which may well have confirmed the shady secret.

Obama's refusal to release his birth certificate does mean that Obama remains one of America's most mysterious and opaque presidents ever.

Yada yada yada. Grab onto a basic untruth, drive it into the ground, and hope it sprouts into a plant. Guess what--it won't grow. It's d-e-a-d. Just give it up and join us on planet Earth, already.

"No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States."

Irrelevant, but according to the Constitution and the placement of commas by the Founding Fathers, we haven't had a legitimate president in 200 years.

But they CAN'T get one that states that they were born in Honolulu. The COLB that Obama released states he was born in Honolulu. That is because that is what is stated on his original birth certificate, the source of information from the COLB.

A foreign-born person might be able to obtain a COLB, but they can't get any damn thing they choose put on it.

Obama's COLB states he was born in Honolulu because he was. End of story.

        Precisely!

Not to mention that Mr. Obama's birth was documented in two newspapers.

Then the right wingnutz come back with the fantasy claim that these are "birth announcements" any parent could place in the paper. Of course, one of the column heads is "Health Bureau Statistics." And the rosters of names are in no apparent order (alpha or chron.) - yet the lists are almost identical in two competing newspapers!

Gee - could the common source for these lists actually be the Health Bureau? You think?

        You betcha!

Wow! Newsmax is now simply making things up.

      (1) Obama *has* released his birth certificate. What he released is what every citizen born in Hawaii gets when asked for a birth certificate. If I were born in Hawaii and asked for a birth certificate, it would look exactly like what Obama posted. The state of Hawaii has confirmed this multiple times.

      (2) There *is* a long form. It is kept in the vault and released only under special circumstances.

ok, so what's going to happen now, President Obama was elected by the people. What are you going to do now? Add a new admendment stating a birth certificate must be presented beforerunning for the office of president. He is president and will remain the president until his term is up, so get over it.
