Buchanan compares Al Gore to Birthers

August 03, 2009 5:31 pm ET by Jamison Foser

On Hardball, moments ago:

PAT BUCHANAN: Global Warming is now a hoax--

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Do you think Global Warming is a hoax?

BUCHANAN: I do think it's a hoax.

MATTHEWS: It's a hoax?

BUCHANAN: I think it goes up and down.  The idea this is grave--

MATTHEWS: -- CO2 emissions, greenhouse gases, doesn't exist?

BUCHANAN: No, it does, of course it exists.  The idea we're all gonna die of this is utter nonsense.  It's a power transfer to governments here, and governments abroad.

MATTHEWS: And the motivation is what?

BUCHANAN: And the motivation is power.  It always is in government.

MATTHEWS: So people like Al Gore have cooked this up to get what?

BUCHANAN: No, I think he believes it, Chris, like the Birthers believe it.  He's just like they are.  It's a religious belief with them.

Remind me again why this guy is on TV?

In a funny way, Mr. Buchanan is right about the birthers and their religion. One definition of religion is belief without proof. Funny, but many 'conservative' ideas currently fall under this heading: President Obama's health coverage reform will kill seniors, is socialism, etc. President Obama is trying to destroy America, is not an American, etc. No one in America wants a public health coverage option, all Americans think it is going to destroy the country, etc.

Strange kind of religion, though. It's kind of like atheism. They don't believe -in- something, but rather -against- something.

So, you're talking about faith, which applies to both religion and politics. I submit that there is no more faith in right wing ideology than from the left.

        Examples:
        - Keynesian economic theory. Has this every proven correct? It's questionable at best, as is most economic theory since there is no control to compare to.

        - Marxism, Fascism, Socialism, etc. Leftist political ideologies that ascribe Utopian goals if the rules are set up properly. Has this ever worked? It's arguable that the free market does a far better job. Marx posited that the value of a good should be correlated to the effort that went into making it. Does that make any sense in light of modern supply-demand economic theory?

So, the NOAA is a bunch of Birthers, too, i suppose, when their ocean temp data showed that June 2009 was the HOTTEST MONTH EVER RECORDED!

        "HOTTEST MONTH EVER RECORDED!"

No, go back and read it again. "The world’s ocean surface temperature was the warmest on record for June, breaking the previous high mark set in 2005,..."

There were also a great many record cold temperatures throughout the world, particularly in the southern hemisphere. If you want to debate facts, I would be happy to oblige you.

Regretably, however respectful and polite I am to "the believers" they always end up spewing profanity and launching ad homenin attacks.

        Will you be any different?

        Brian

Read my post again: "ocean temp data showed that June 2009 was the HOTTEST MONTH EVERY RECORDED"

Any profanity or attacks in there you can find? Lemme know ... Try reading this one more carefully, FYI

Not to be confrontational, but the quote from NOAA was that is was the "warmest on record for June", not the hottest month ever, just for June.

Of course there are a great many qualifications to go with that claim. I've spent the last 14 years working for PhD's and witnessing statistical sleight of hand on a daily basis.

I'm extremely skeptical of any claim by anyone. Thanks for keeping it civil. Nice talking with you.

Except that climate scientists have, you know, scientific evidence and proof Pat. The Birthers have nothing but their loony crazy ideas.

There's just a teenie tiny difference between Al Gore, the birthers, and Pat Buchanan. Gore's statements are based on facts supported by 98% of the world's scientists. The birthers statements are based on nothing but wishful thinking. Buchanan's statements are based on distortion, hyperbole, and self-aggrandizement.

Where do you get this "98%" support figure from? Maybe a little wishful thinking going on here? I read the peer reviewed papers every day. There is no consensus.

Government scientists have been paid billions over the last decade or so to give governments "scientific" cover to re-engineer human society to their liking.

Tragically, the world's poor and impoverished will pay the highest price.

the brainsashing is almost complete, 98%, really. can you back that statistic up. answer, no. 31,500 actual scientists have signed the "oregon petition" which states they see no evidence of man made global warming. the lead author of the ipcc's first report absolutley disagrees with its conclusions, in fact a number of actual scientists sued to have their names removed from this fraudulent report. they sued because they did not agree with how the science had been perverted and subverted by political statements. alarmists have built model after model to "prove" their theory and not one has come anywhere near predicting climate. the scientific method, which is internationally recognized as the only proper method of proving theory, states that if observations do not match the outcomes predicted by a given theory then that theory MUST BE DISMISSED! this is how "science" works, it does not squash debate (which by the way, we never have had on this issue), it does not name call and most of all it is not based on a "belief" system. my first experiment with atmospherci co2 levels was conducted 32 years ago and i have been following the "science" ever since. yes, al gores was smoking pot and flunking out of divinity school while i was pondering co2. science tells me that the acreage on which my home sits was covered by a mile thick sheet of ice not once, but many times. not once was one of those massive continental glaciers melted by my or anyone elses suv. i only wish we could heat up the atmosphere by pumping up co2 levels, that would come in very handy in the next ice age. you see, science tells us that co2 has a thermal saturation level and we have just about reached that threshhold. what this means is we can emit all the co2 we want and it will do little if anything to effect temperatures. the next ice age will come, sooner than later, and many people will die of exposure and starvation. warming is good for the planet, it brings more food and more habitable terrain. cooling brings crop failures and limits the surface area where humans can survive. the party is over for the chicken littles, the lights have been turned off but noone ever told then to go home. sad.

There are two things one should never discuss at the dinner table: religion and politics. and these are exactly what these two people are discussing. we dont want to hear that al gore believes in some kind of eco green religion. and we dont want to hear about the ways the government is keeping control of us. its simple. no one wants to hear what other peoples opinions are
