Advertisers dump Glenn Beck

August 06, 2009 11:33 am ET by Eric Boehlert

From ColorofChange.org news release:

Three companies who run ads during Glenn Beck -- NexisLexis-owned Lawyers.com, Proctor & Gamble and Progressive Insurance -- today distanced themselves from Beck. LexisNexis has pulled its advertising from Beck and says it has no plans to advertise on the program in the future. Both Proctor & Gamble and Progressive Insurance called the Beck advertising placements an error that they would correct.

The decision by the three companies comes as over 45,000 ColorofChange.org members call on advertisers to pull their ads from Glenn Beck after the controversial news host called President Obama a "racist" who "has a deep-seated hatred for white people" on "Fox & Friends" last week.

"Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention," said John Michaels, Senior Communications Manager at LexisNexis in an email to ColorOfChange.org. "We have suspended further advertising during Mr. Beck's program."

Nuts or not; he does seem to bring attention to items not reported by the mainstream. I don't agree with his statement of that opinion though. I was somewhat offended by GB's opinion but also by the president's comment of his white mother's alleged intolerance to Blacks. Both of their statements need to be examined carefully.

After generations of injustice and hatred, there is a lot of hurt and anger that has been passed down. It is hard not to interpret these events through those old lenses.

Now Rev. Wright, that is entirely another matter. I do find his rhetoric hateful; however wrong those injustices were.

So you're offended on how Obama knew his mother? Or you're offended *for* his mother? What business is it of yours how Obama knew his mother. Unless you can prove him wrong (decades later), it's none of your business.

Wait a minute. A man says that his white (It was his grandmother, not his mother) had an intolerant attitude towards blacks, and you say it was alleged???? Because you know better than he??? He is an unreliable source about his grandmother's attitudes....why? Why are you offended by Obama's description of his own family member's belief? Sounds like you may be indulging in a little white supremacy, yourself, buddy. If a white person said that their parents/grandparents were NOT racists, should be be skeptical of that? Sounds like the only reason for your skepticism is a belief that Obama cannot be trusted because he is BLACK, and that we should not believe that his white grandparents are WHITE like YOU! That is the very definition of racism.

Obama's GRANDMOTHER didn't have an "alleged intolerance to Blacks," she was of the generation where there WAS a difference made, whether it was right or wrong. My grandmother is of that generation . . . she is far from being intolerant of blacks or racist, but she still holds to some of the customs and beliefs that were prevalent in her youth. [She's almost 97.]

As for Beck "bringing attention to items not reported by the mainstream," he IS part of the mainstream despite his protestations to the contrary. Most of the items he reports are FALSE. I've been listening to Beck on the radio for several years. He's crazy.

Thank you for clarifying 'Notmyrealname's statement. His Grandmother didn't have an intolerance but was scared by an black person one early morning(before dawn) going to work in Hawaii. Obama's grandfather from then on took her to work. Just read his book! Also there were tensions between his grandparents in Hawaii & Kenya. In the late 50's early 60's Barack's paternal grandfather wanted Barack's father to marry a tribe woman following the family tradition. Barack's mother wanted to live in Kenya with Barack's family. Tensions ensued.
That was the way it was in the pre civil rights era. Knowledge is power 'Notmyrealname' and you will not get it from watching Glenn Beck or FOX news... READ! Oh and just in case of rebuttal; Barack Obama wrote that book(Dreams of my Father) before he was elected to Congress just after his mother passed away. 1st published in 1995.

I don't see the difference. There was a difference made because, at the time, there was an explicit intolerance of blacks. That is intolerance, that is racism. Doesn't matter if everyone on the block felt that way, or everyone in the church. It is racism.

Bintx, my Pop was of that generation and he taught us it is not the color of the skin but the character and intergrity that you look for in a person.

Never heard of GB till my husband saw him on CNN I believe & then popped up on Fox - I love his caring and love of America and truth, the silliness does not appeal to us. We are more concerned with the truth - the real truth and he seems to be one of many that is letting us know.

Wonder why anyone would listen to someone they thought was crazy for several years?

There's something interesting going on here, too.

This morning Beck went on for about 10 minutes with apocalyptic warnings about the end times being near-- and then he directly segued into a commercial for some gold dealer.

This is happening all over the right wing talk shows-- this catering program content to the advertisers. It's a first.

Glenn is NUTS like a FOX!!!

It's all a show. There is no real news on that channel, it caters to the crazies.

I would put Beck, Olberman, O'Reilly, Limbaugh et al. in the same category as Marylin Manson, Ziggy Stardust, Howard Stern and ALice Cooper.

I am in no way saying that the TALENT is equal, but they are all characters who are ENTERTAINERS!!!

Glenn Beck is not now nor has he EVER been a serious journalist, he is a clown putting on a show!!

The REAL scary part in all this is that some people don't know any better.

Another victim of the RIGHT..Time for all RadioWingNutz and Fox TV to join together. Where are Becks' freedom of expression? Right next to everyone elses'.
What is the big deal if a few advertisers' cancel thier advertising? Don't they have rights also? Don't these WingNutz say if you don't like what I say, change the station? Well, we changed the station and called your advertisers, isn't this the America you preach? Sort of like a town hall fracas but the other side is doing it.
I am sure that Rush and SeannieTheSissy Boy will stand up for the rights of all Americans and say this is CHOICE at its finest.
On the Quinn post, I wrote that this morning, he suggested that if Congressmen don't hold TownHall meeting that people should go to that persons' house and stay until they get the answers they want. Not thier District Office but to thier home. This can only create a problem which he will then use on his hateful radio show. He'll use his pawns to further himself.
Hey Repubs, don't you remember that we are still out here. Because you squeal like baby pigs everyday doesn't mean everyone went away.

This is all well and good, but why didn't they pull their advertisements when Beck had the guest on who was begging for Bin Laden or any willing person to detonate a WMD in the U.S. to "Save the Republican Party"?
Praying and begging for the destruction of the U.S. and untold numbers of innocent Americans doesn't strike ME as Patriotic. It doesn't strike ME as very "Christian" either.
So what does that REALLY make them?
      Other than EVIL?

We have Glenn Beck hour at our house. No one moves or talks while he is on the TV. We love to hear his program. He is the Best informer of the news. P&G should be aware that his rating is up and in our Town of 20,000 I would say the most watch his program and are thinkng the same thing he says. The only thing is he says it and we think it... Fox News is the only program we watch from the time we get up in the morning till we retire at night. Glenn Beck tells it like it is. I know I been there and done that too.
Over the many years I have seen this government change for the worst. Just now the public is waking up to the reality. Over the years the citizens were working to keep body and soul alive and neglected what the government was doing. The properganda the government put out we belived and now it is coming home to roost.
Keep the Faith. Glenn is telling the truth. He us not a hate person he is a person of truth.

Let me be clear: the rightwing media (FOX "news" in particular), astroturf "grassroots" organizations, and the Republican Party are TRYING TO INCITE VIOLENCE, and the exact reason for it is that they are not the majority anymore. And the mainstream media is complicit in covering this minority of people to make it appear that they are a majority of American people!

I think the advertisers are the losers. Glenn beck is a political commentator that sparks debate and topics of conversations. Glenn Becks ratings are really climbing because he speaks what Americans are feeling. Someday if we ever get back to having an America with Americans in it people will stand up to Obama socialist ways. He has done more damage in 6 months the Bush did in eight years or as far as any republican OR democrat has done in 50 years! Come on people where is your common sense!

I don't know if the man is racist or not (or should "the man" be capitalized now?), he is, in my humble opinion, biased. You need look no farther than his books to realize that. Although if you chose to look further, you could take a look (I know, I know... old news) at the aforementioned Rev. Wright and "Liberation Theology". I understand The Man's explanation, but you cannot sit in one of Wright's pews as long as he did and not agree with what is coming from the pulpit. To do so would be hypocritical at best. I push no agenda, just observations. Left, right, they say different things, but do the same things.

I agree with beck. Go ahead and flag me.

Here's the link to the product line from Proctor and Gamble. In case you'd rather not support them anymore either.

I'm also switching my motorcycle insurance and encouraging the rest of my MC to do the same.

I have occasionally watched Glenn Beck. MediaMatters usually brings up his most egregious rantings, even though there others that are less so. Does Glenn Beck have any idea that name calling, ad hominem attacks, and wildly silly remarks are not journalism. Or does it matter? It seems that GB's opinions are true and correct and if facts contradict, ignore them, downplay them, belittle them, and make up some more convenient ones. If this opinion is incorrect, show me where I am wrong.

If Glenn thinks he is describing a tennable, middle-of-the-road position, then sponsors leaving means they are radical leftists who do not wish to support freedom of speech--at least that's one way that I would surmise GB to react.

Let's hope it is just the start. Writing letters makes a lot of difference. Calling is even more effective. We can make a difference.

Ummmm, did everybody forget that Obama is half WHITE!!!! His mother is Caucasian. I highly doubt he is "a racist". Good try though, Glen Beck. Queue the Team America music.

Im sorry but in the grand scheme of things who really cares? I am all for free speech. But name calling isnt called for regardless of who you are. Ive got bigger worries than someone who is calling the president names.

I'm happy to see that at least 3 companies have distanced themselves from Beck. We need more to boycott him. He is anti-American, and the rhetoric that he espouses as well as those from Fox & his buddies are despicable. I try to give all the networks a fair hearing, but it is disgusting to listen to the "Fox" network, especially to Glen Beck. He lacks integrity and is an embarrassment to those in his "circle of influence". Shame on those who are ratcheting up this hate message against our President and democracy. This is dangerous for all of us. We need the informed and critical thinkers to step up to the plate!

This does not shock me at all. I watched Fox News a bit before the election (along with CNN and MSNBC) and while I felt some slant to the right, they seemed to try and balance a bit.

However, since the election it has been horrible. They seem to start EVERY newscast with "WHAT DID OBAMA SCREW UP TODAY, STAY TUNNED." There is no balanace at all. Beck is another example of how Fox, perhaps upset with the outcome of the election, has decided to become the "ANTI-OBAMA NETWORK".

I don't believe Obama has done everything every day right. However, I don't expect an American network to bash the president day in and out... BE BALANCED.

President Obama promised to tone down the rancor in this country.
He has not done that. He promised to reach across the isle. He has not done that.

President Obama has brought change, alright. If anyone thought our country couldn't be divided more than under President Bush, think again. Today we are more divided than ever.

President Obama is supposed to be the president of ALL the people, not just liberals and progressives. On that mission he has failed completely. He acts like his progressive mission is what everyone wants. He is wrong.

      Dear Mr. President,
Act like a President not a progressive idialogue.

Obama has met with republicans several times and been rebuffed several times by them. Within one week of his inauguration he invited republicans to meet with him. He has persistently attempted to include republicans on most issues without much success.

When glenn pretended he was poisoning Pelosi he went way over the edge. THat is not acceptable and anybody who continues to advertise on his show will lose my patronage. This country has morphed into hate speech which is a very strong indication of the steep decline of this country. If it is not stopped then collapse is certain. Ironic these hate mongers like glenn compare our president to Hitler when they are embracing the Hitler tactics themselves. glenn should be canned.

Glen Beck comes across to me as being very sincere and loves America - the One Nation that was founded upon GOD - Anyone that does not see or understand how we are being destroyed is ignorant of pure right and wrong. GOD is the creator of freedom !! Personally love Glen's serious side of sharing. I personally will go thru my cabinets and will find out which products are made by Proctor & Gamble and will no longer buy them. As far as the other two don't buy their products anyway. Shame Shame on those that call good evil and evil good. Amazing how some cannot recognize nor appreciate truth. Oh yes some will believe a lie before they will believe the truth. Not sure why we have chosen to have a man or woman lead us when we could have GOD as our leader here on earth. I
