Inventing tales of a union "beating"

August 08, 2009 10:11 am ET by Eric Boehlert

The conservative blogosphere is absolutely atwitter with news that an activist was attacked by union thugs at a town hall meeting this week in St. Louis. It's the best the right-wing can do to deflect blame for unleashing mini-mobs on town hall forums: They did it!

The tale was first told in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

Kenneth Gladney, 38, a conservative activist from St. Louis, said he was attacked by some of those arrested as he handed out yellow flags with "Don't tread on me" printed on them. He spoke to the Post-Dispatch from the emergency room at St. John's Mercy Medical Center, where he said he was awaiting treatment for injuries to his knee, back, elbow, shoulder and face. Gladney, who is black, said one of his attackers, also a black man, used a racial slur against him before the attack.

The newspaper had no witnesses, just Gladney's account. Then Gladney's attorney got involved and from conservatives' perspective, the tale got better and better:

He went to the ground. Subsequently, two other SEIU representatives or members, however you want to say it, jumped on top of him, yelled racial epithets at him...kicked him, punched him...He sustained some injuries to his back, some bruising.

And even better:

The SEIU member used a racial slur against Kenneth, then punched him in the face. Kenneth fell to the ground. Another SEIU member yelled racial epithets at Kenneth as he kicked him in the head and back. Kenneth was also brutally attacked by one other male SEIU member and an unidentified woman. The three men were clearly SEIU members, as they were wearing T-shirts with the SEIU logo.

Gladney was clearly beaten at length (it was "brutal"), and at least from this description, was lucky to survive with his life, right?

Mary Katharine Ham wrote up an especially excited write-up at The Weekly Standard about the vicious union thugs and how Gladney was severely beaten. The only mistake Ham made was including a YouTube clip of the incident; a clip that pretty much undercuts the entire tale of run-away union violence.

Go watch the YouTube video. (Or, the "shocking video," as Power Line hypes it.) The first thing you notice when the camera starts rolling is a union member already sprawled out on the ground with somebody standing over him. No explanation of how he got there (pushed, shoved, punched?) and Ham couldn't care less. Then yes, Gladney is pulled to the ground by somebody wearing a union shirt. (At the :06 mark.) But instead of Gladney being beaten and punched, as his attorney describes, and instead of union "thugs" standing over him and threatening him, Gladney bounces right back on his feet in approximately two seconds and the scuffle ends.

That was the savage "beating" the conservative blogosphere can't stop talking about?

The only real mystery from the incident is why Tea Party member Gladney, who's seen up-close after the brief encounter walking around and talking to people and who appears to be injury-free, then decided to go to the hospital to treat injuries to his "knee, back, elbow, shoulder and face." All that from a two-second fall to the pavement?

Also unclear is why he contacted a newspaper reporter, or why his attorney wrote up lavish accounts and sent them to conservative bloggers, or why Gladney and his attorney appeared on Fox News.

FYI, according to his attorney, Gladney plans on filing a civil lawsuit against the union.

UPDATED: The Hill erroneously reported that Gladney had been "hospitalized" after being "attacked." As you can see from the video, Gladney was not "hospitalized." (i.e. Rushed away by ambulance.) Instead, as the Post-Dispatch correctly reported, Gladney "said he sought hospital treatment."

Even if was injured, I bet his health insurance company would find a way to reject his claims (that is, if he has health insurance).

Ya see, the party who thinks all we need is TORT reform sent Tea Party member Gladney to the hospital to treat injuries to his "knee, back, elbow, shoulder and face." And to drive up health care cost even more, he has a lawyer.

Those bunch of hypocrites... They're pro life unless you kill an Abortion doctor and pro TORT until you throw one of our guys to the ground.

I really hope this wakes the nation up to the effort being taken to oppose any cost controls to health care. I hope they are made to pay for this in 2010 and 2012. The democrats need to make their case clear, we tried to reduce your health care cost and received nothing but corporate sponsored opposition from the Republican's.

No one is asking how the first guy hit the ground.

If it was an attack, prosecute...if the other guy hit someone first, prosecute him. Easy. Done. Over...until tonite or tomorrow.

As an aside..the QOTUS, Sarah Palin, shows her stupidity once again with a Twitter about "death panel" being evil. She will hide now not having to answer questions. And the Idiotic Right will defend her. Sarah has put the TWIT in TWITTER

She also uses her handicapped child again...This cretin will stop at nothing to prove what a mindless creature she is.
But it is a great audition for Fox or a talk show which will not allow call-ins.

Hey harley, here's a helpful bit of the Patriot Act that might be brought to bear:

        Title VIII: Terrorism criminal law
Main article: USA PATRIOT Act, Title VIII

Title VIII alters the definitions of terrorism, and establishes or re-defines rules with which to deal with it. It redefined the term "domestic terrorism" to broadly include mass destruction as well as assassination or kidnapping as a terrorist activity. The definition also encompasses activities that are "dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State" and are intended to "intimidate or coerce a civilian population," "influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion," or are undertaken "to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping"

Wouldn't it be funny to see conservatives hoist on their own petard?

And since the black man is president, anything, and I mean ANY charge presented by their radio/tv svengalis, no matter how ridiculous, is therefore taken by these hicks to be the gospel truth.

"Also unclear is why his attorney wrote up lavish accounts and sent them to conservative bloggers"

Because he didn't know how far he could go when it comes to dealing with conservative blogs.

He could have released a statement stating that he was killed by union thugs, and the blogs would have printed it. He could have released a video of himself saying "Yesterday I was killed by union thugs" and conservatives would pass it around, not even glimpsing a discrepancy.

Mr. Boehlert, why don't you request a copy of the police report from the St. Louis County Police before rushing to judgment? Or at least contact the police department for comment? From what I understand, three independent witnesses gave reports to the police regarding the attack. All of them stated that the SEIU guys attacked Gladney. If you watch Gladney on Neil Cavuto, you will learn that he is not a Tea Party member and in fact does not even have an opinion on the health care debate (which is probably the stance of MOST Americans). It seems he was there selling Gadsen flags and conservative buttons to make a buck. One of the black SEIU guys apparently was angered that Gladney, a black man, was selling conservative merchandise.

Listen, I'm far from conservative, but it angers me when I see journalists commenting on this and putting their own spin on it to substantiate their own political opinions without even gathering all the facts. Contact the St. Louis County Police Department and I'm sure they'll give you plenty of information on this incident. In my mind, it's very believable that a bunch of union guys might beat up a black man because they thought he was a sell-out. It's even more believable to me that a pro health-care-reform black union guy would get VERY upset about seeing another black man selling anti-Obama merchandise. Contact the SEIU for their take on this. Contact Mr. Gladney. Contact his lawyer. If "media matters," as this website proclaims, then gather all the evidence before writing and publishing your story. I believe that's what journalists attempted to do before the advent of the Internet.

You guys seem to be willing to put up with Obama. That signifies accommodation with collectivism. You either know nothing of the damaging facts of that kind of governance or suffering mental deprivation as a product of our valueless society. Healthcare is just one of the processes in America that Obama wants to collectivize. He will do them all if he gets his way. His agenda rides in on the persistent wave of subversion that has infected the US since FDR. It couldn't have happened with educational, media and patriotic influences that had not been ravaged by these useful idiots and fellow travelers. These folks started with communism's manifesto and insinuated those precepts into all of our now worthless schools and media communicators. How is it otherwise possible that so many of our friends and neighbors voted for this mole?

As far as the condition of our erstwhile pin and flag vendor, the damage is more than skin deep. Accepting the vid as proof of goon innocence doesn’t seem likely for the viewers on a more unbiased site.

The problem with this whole universal health care is,the President is still beholden to the big insurance lobbt.Tom Daschle, who Obama was originally going to make point man on insurance is a lobbyist for guess who?Read Business Week August 17th and you will plainly see Obama has no intention of making health care a right for all US citizens.
The Insurance companies will continue to suck the blood out of America as long as there is not a single payer system.I voted for Obama in the general election, but was for Sec. Clinton for just this very reason,in the primary.
The right wing of this country must be dragged, kicking and screaming, whenever change to help ALL Americans is being instituted.Glenn Beck recently hinted at reperations being behind Obama's complete agenda.I as a 48 year old white man,say even if it were true, which it as not,so what. After the Civil war it took another 100 years to get these people some semblance of equality and having good health is small payment for the worst atrocities imaginable. The Holocaust pales in comparison to the decades and decades of murder and abuseheaped upon a people merely for the color of their skin.
Now the usual suspects line up to try and defeat an attempt to level the paths of life out. What is in it for me is the basic ideology of the disgraceful GOP.The problem is the left has moved so far right, that equality and justice for all are nothing but words on a meaningless document now.A 3rd party has now become essential to protect the rights of millions and millions of people being, once again, left out in the cold with no jacket.

The Weekly Standard's Mary Katherine Hall needs to brush up her listening skills. From her report,

As the camera pans back over to a bewildered Gladney and surrounding witnesses, you can hear White Polo say, "Two of you attacked that poor guy."

      SEIU: "No, we didn't."

      White Polo: "Yeah, you did!"

      SEIU: "He attacked America!" (1:01)

"He attacked America!" would be a pretty dumb thing to say, don't you think, and if I was a conservative blogger, my ears would love to hear a liberal say something like that so I could tell all my like-minded friends.

But that's not what the mustached SEIU guy in the video said; instead, he clearly said,

      "He attacked a minister."

We know he said, "a minister," and not America because ten seconds earlier on the video, the same mustached SEIU guy twice said “[inaudible name] is a minister,” preceded by a mild expletive the first time. Mustached SEIU guy was referring to the other SEIU guy, who we find on the ground when the video clip starts.

Ms. Hall must have blinked, or sneezed, or something, as Eric points out, because her account starts five seconds into the video, after the other SEIU guy returned to his feet. Seems there's no room in her reporting for ministers getting knocked down at health care town halls turned violent.

      sorry haters of labor unions...

AMERICANS REMAIN BROADLY SUPPORTIVE OF UNIONS

Americans remain broadly supportive of labor unions, as they have been over the past 7 decades, including a majority approval rating for unions in Gallup's most recent update.

...Americans have held a favorable view of unions for decades -- with most Americans saying they approve of labor unions in Gallup polls conducted from 1936 to 2008.

...In the last 4 years, a higher percentage of Americans have expressed a preference for increased union influence, with less saying it should stay the same. The percentage that favors decreased union influence has stayed relatively flat over the years.

Americans have been consistently supportive of labor unions at a very general level for at least the past 7 decades.

Interesting information. Can anyone explain why union membership declined over the same period? At some prosperous point, Americans must have decided that unions did not help them. Democrats shafted unions just as badly as Republicans. Shipping jobs overseas, NAFTA, support for illegal immigrants who take the lowest-skilled jobs, can't exactly be called pro-union.

Please don't tell me Americans won't take those jobs. The work was done by high school kids and people without education. Where do they find work now as jobs evaporate? All immigrant labor, legal or illegal, unskilled and highly skilled, should be stopped until the economy recovers.

Supply-demand applies. Immigrant labor depresses wages because it adds workers to the available labor pool.Union membership won't change that. The proposed amnesty is just another assault by both parties on American workers and wages.

It is good to finally read an objective analysis of the event. If anything, the video shows the SEIU members as targets of the violence.

Clearly none of you have ever been in a fight. With his adrenaline pumping he probably did not realize he had injuries until well after the attack. I suppose all of the witnesses to the attack were paid by the GOP.

All that being said, I'm an independent who doesn't condone violence from either side. The more you allow Government control of your life, the more of a puppet you become.

Nope, he doesn't have insurance - but he's gladly taking donations.

      Irony?
