Sargento "won't be airing" ads during Glenn Beck

August 11, 2009 6:43 pm ET by Oliver Willis

Last week I sent an email to Sargento asking about their advertising on Fox News' Glenn Beck in light of Beck's comments about Speaker Pelosi. I received this response:

We deeply appreciate your reaching out to us and sharing your comments and concerns about Sargento ads appearing during "The Glenn Beck Show." We sat down with the marketing department to talk about it and I learned that we buy time periods not specific programs. But in any event, they've made the decision to exclude that program from our future ad rotation. Simply stated, Sargento ads won't be airing during that show. Again, thanks for contacting us.

I wonder how much difference it will make if advertisers pull out of the Glenn Beck Show but not out of FOX?

Exactly. If these companies wish not to be associated with programs that call our president names like Hitler or call him socialist or that he is racist, then NO shows on Fox News would run their ads. Certainly not anything with hosts like O'Reilly or Cavuto or Fox & Friends ...

Tell that to the advertisers. Preferably politely. Clearly, the work that Media Matters has done has made a difference. Today Sargento, tomorrow Wal-Mart!
          Now where's that "Donate" link?
          ...
          Ah!

It makes a difference. When the marketing department negotiates their prices, Fox will be hard pressed to fill Glenn Beck Show's ad time, forcing them to lower the prices to get some ads running.

At least, that's how I think it might work.

I'm pleased, since I'm a big fan of Sargento cheese. However, I suspect it will make little difference. I don't believe for a minute that Beck or Hannity or Limbaugh are accountable to market forces. I'm convinced that their corporate sugardaddies value their propaganda too much to let them fail.

Which might explain the $2B loos News Corp took last quarter; Rupert perhaps subsidizing Faux News with his other ventures?...

The dishonest, lopsided message of Murdoch's merry band of right-wing professional liars is far too important. He'll bleed cash if necessary until the heat blows over and the ad revenue flows freely again.

They could take the approach that FOX sponsors the show. Then use the ad time to promote the other shows, websites, books, and teabaggery in general.

Let's all support Sargento, buy cheese so they have to expand their production (and maybe I can sell them some more equipment.)

Regardless whether this loss of an advertiser actually causes Glen Beck a problem, I strongly suspect that this will anger Beck to such an extent that his crazy attacks will increase. At least it will be entertaining to watch...

Shouldn't we all be writing personal thank you notes to these companies that have pulled their advertising from Glenn Beck? I've written to S.C. Johnson, Geiko Insurance, Progressive Insurance, any company I see that has pulled their ads. I say "Thank you - you have done the right thing and raised my estimation of your company 100%" If they are affirmed by consumers, they will get the message that we support companies that do not support such commentary. Who knows - maybe it spill over to O'Reilly, Hannity, etc...

I agree with this! We let these people know that we notice them doing the wrong thing...we need to let them know that we notice when they do the RIGHT thing. I hope someone makes it just as easy to get this kind of contact info as someone has made it to get the info the last couple of weeks. (Is that info still up on Daily Kos?)

Men's Wearhouse has pulled their ads, too - that makes seven advertisers that won't touch Beck.

No matter how much Murdock and Ailes might want to keep Beck around, this has to start showing up on the bottom line very soon.

If nothing else, this has been a very effective campaign.

This would only be a TRUE victory if the advertisers left Faux Noise completely. It sounds like all they are doing is shifting around the times they run. Insannity and Bill-o the clown are almost as bad and then of course you have Faux and friends insanity hour.

I called on Verizon Wireless customers to contact VZ about this...and then realized that I had been misinformed about VZ Wireless advertising on Becks show...and THEN saw a VZ Wireless ad on Hannity last night.

Honestly...I think Hannity's worse. Beck is SO clownish that I have a feeling he's taken less seriously. (Although I could be wrong.) I've never seen anyone lie with such a straight face and such conviction and absence of concenrn, remorse or irony than Hannity. I think I'm going to stay on VZ Wireless.

The color of change people emphasize racism.

But saying nasty things about the president may not be the real reason for the success of the boycott of Beck.

But pretending he's giving poisoned wine to a Pelosi character is another thing. Yes, he took it back immediately. But that bit of theater is just plain beyond the pale.

What if there's violence against Pelosi or Obama and there's the slightest link to Beck? The crazy watches Beck or worse has posted a comment. I wouldn't want to be a sponsor who stayed with Beck when others decided his behaviour was unacceptable.
