Men's Wearhouse reportedly pulls ads from Glenn Beck

August 12, 2009 9:08 am ET by Eric Boehlert

A Daily Kos diarist contacted the men's clothing chain and last night posted the response he received:

Dear [TTG],

Thank you for contacting Men’s Wearhouse and bringing to our attention your concerns with the Glenn Beck program on Fox News. While we support free speech and do not make advertising decisions based on our own personal ideologies, after reviewing his recent incendiary comments we have decided to remove our advertising from his program. We hope that this decision will allow you to continue to patronize Men’s Wearhouse. I would encourage you to please share our decision with anyone else who may have expressed a similar concern.

Thank you again for contact Men’s Wearhouse.

Sincerely,

Matt Stringer

Ouch! Are all Beck's Sponsors in Retreat?
How will the "Glen Beck Show" be able to Compete?
Don't his Sponsors have any Backbone?
What's wrong with a little Fascist Hate & Racism in Mr Beck's Microphone?

      Speak truth to power.

This was probably a good idea all along. I mean, how many of Glenn Beck's viewers buy suits?

The dirty little secret about all the right wing nutz' radio and tv shows is the average age of the listener/viewer...let me put it this way. You aren't going to hear or hear skateboard ads anytime soon.

Pimp the bank that holds your credit card debt? Don't want to pay the IRS? Wanna get rich buying gold (pop the reduced value of your 401(k)? Then the conservative media deliver your target demo.

BTW: Has anyone else heard the gold ads on conservative radio (each host seems to have a pet gold company) declaring "most experts agree" gold will soon double in value? Wow!

And how is it Mark Levin (who does sound just like the AFLAC duck) and Sheer "Hot Air" InSannity received identical letters from happy customers of the legal forms company they pitch? Cooincidence in real life? You betcha!

"most experts agree" gold will soon double in value...

Yeah, but these are the same guys that dispute what "most experts agree" on regarding Global Warming, Health Care, the Economy, Evolution, Creation Science, Stare Decisis, the Constitution, etc...

So I'm really beginning to wonder what dumpster they pull their "experts" out of.

Could it be...that Mark Levin is actually Gilbert Gottfried in disguise?...

Actually, I've held the longstanding belief that Mark Levin sounds EXACTLY like the Martians in "Mars Attacks".

I know it's painful, because that movie is horrible, but go back and give it a listen... maybe he recorded all their "dialogue".

You know, I'm having more fun than people releasing my inner teabagging troll, so here goes:

"HOW DARE YU TAKE AWAY PATREOTIC GELN BECKS RIGHT TO FREE SPECH!!!!! ATHIESTIC PIGS HATE FREDOM!!! GO BACK TO CUBA!!!!!"...

Of course, it's rather exhausting after a while to deliberately shut down most brain functions to do this...

well you seem not to know how to make your point..where did you attend school by the way?do u even have a GED?i will show you a few grammartical corrections.....the right spelling for the word is(patriotic)not PATREOTIC,,,,secondly you say (speech) not SPECH

i was born and raised in Africa but never knew i could ever encounter illiterate individuals like you in great old America....Thats why a person like you will easily fall for the lies and gospel of people like Glen Beck and his mentor Limbaugh.....a point of advice to you my old friend...instead of telling others to go back to Cuba or Mexico or wherever,if you can take yourself back to school, then you will certainly be doing yourself a great favor....hala back..i will be looking out for you....DUM DUM

      Geico, Sergento, Men's Wearhouse....

And (I guess) that Verizon was a bad lead.

So... WHO'S LEFT? Hey, MMFA - you might consider adding a section to the website which has up-to-date lists of ALL of the companies that sponser the TV and Radio shows of at least the heavy hitters: Limbaugh, Savage, O'Rielly, Hannity and Beck.

Then we could all voice our reservations. (And POV, FairLib, AA, etc... could all voice thier their support. Just to be fair.)

But seriously: That could really help make a difference.

Sure, I'm happy to do the math. August 10th cable TV news ratings:

Glenn Beck -- 2,417,000 viewers; all other cable news programs in the same time slot -- 1,781,000.

O'Reilly (8 pm) 3,814,000 viewers; all other cable news programs in the same time slot -- 3,066,000.

Hannity (9 pm) -- 3,118,000 viewers; all other cable news programs in the same time slot -- 2,452,000

Greta (10 pm) -- 2,388,000; all other cable news programs in the same time slot -- 1,960,000.

          Thanks for asking!!

Because Becky supposedly has "2 million viewers" that means advertisers cannot or should not take their advertising dollars away from a bigoted, racist, hateful, and lying miscreant? Brilliant "logic".

I think it has more to do with the content of Beck's program than the voices raised in objection. Once these sponsors examine the fear-mongering and hatred that Beck spews, they elect to advertise elsewhere. This compaign is more about enlightening the advertisers to his behavior than it is about threatening a little loss of business.

You can't boycott a product you don't normally use. That's my point. People who don't even watch Glenn Beck get all whipped into a frenzy by the MMFA and start a boycott campaign. I think that's un-American. All you folks think shouting down opposition at Town Hall meetings is un-American, but think this type of action is A-OK. Hypocritical, don't you think?

You're here, on the board, complaining about corporations marketing decisions. Wow! How does that feel in a free market? That's a silly accusation. No one is trying to stifle Beck's free speech. Even if he's pulled off the air he still has free speech. I don't have a show on TV and I have free speech. I assume you don't have a show on tv and you're free to say what you wish.

As I say he's still on the air. But if he weren't it would have nothing to do with stifling opposition. It's about what sells. If advertisers don't think his rhetoric is good for their image they won't use him and he may eventually lose his show. Free markets are a b!tch.
