Will the media fact-check President McCain?

August 25, 2009 2:43 pm ET by Jamison Foser

All three cables are carrying John McCain's town hall meeting.  They do know the election is over, and he lost, right?  And they do know this doesn't count as "substantive" health care coverage, right?

And surely they'll follow this up by fact-checking McCain's claims -- and those made by people speaking at the event?  McCain just completely ducked a question about whether the questioner will still be able to choose his own doctor under proposed health care reforms.  McCain didn't come within a country mile of answering the question -- maybe because he didn't want to admit that, yes, the questioner will be able to do so.

So, that's something that the cables should probably make clear before viewers get the wrong idea.

Oh, and McCain just took this question: "We want to know how to help you."  Yes, that's the question an audience member asked McCain.  I'm sure we'll see rampant speculation that the forum was screened in advance, just like we did when Barack Obama did a town hall.

Funny, FOX won't even carry Obama's daytime appearances unless there's sufficient disorderly conduct and shouting... Remember how FOX so dilligently hung on every word out of Bush's mouth? Yeah, that was great.

This is like Deja Vu all over again. The reich wing is like a cancer that keeps spreading and needs constant bombardment by massive doses of reality!

I've been watching (geez, I need to get a life) and McCain has ducked or been disingenous with his answers to most of the questions. I also see a large part of the audience is elderly. He should be able to be truthful to them about not losing medicare.

Not to give McCain a break but; that is what a lot (most) politicians do.
Never make a statement where you are difinative on anything, otherwise you will have to explain it, down the road, when you make another statement that contradicts that.

If you're a republican, you can give all the definitive answers you want. You can screw up any answer, contradict yourself left and right, or make no sense. Nobody will notice.

McCain is apparently too old to remember what the rules are.

True, although it should be remembered that his 0-3 performance helped contribute to the election results.

I think that his town hall meeting had gone by rather well, except for a few moments when he seemed to sidestep issues, and in one instance seemed defensive (when a questioner asked why Republicans only seem to address health care and Medicare during election cycles, and why nothing was done in the past). He had even go on to say that there would be no yelling at his town hall meeting, and for the most part, the audience was civil, even if you do consider that he won 54% of the Arizona votes.

Being the politician, McCain had greeted questions, and even criticisms, with interest, and in one instance, questioning a nurse how to better improve the system based on her perspective. The John McCain of today's town hall was more personable then ever before...

It was interesting that unlike other Republicans, McCain graciously defended Obama's faith in the constitution amidst jeers...

Regardless of how personable John McCain was, he had stuck only to talking points, and although he had suggested changes to the legislation, and had stated that Democrats had overwhelmingly refused Republican amendments, he failed to offer any details on the supposed other Republican proposals, as well as what the audience can do to help... and he offered little to no reassurance that he would help, other then his smile and nod, and his trademark platitude of referring to the audience as "my friends".

This was a set up right from the start. I'm livid, just absolutely livid. I live in Arizona, I have no health insurance. The first I heard about this town hall was this morning at 6 am. I am reasonably well-informed, I watch the local news, I click around on the internet during the day - visiting local az sites along with national ones, and I had no idea this meeting was occuring. I'd even searched out and checked to see what Az town halls were planned a couple of weeks ago, and I didn't see these listed. They obviously didn't want actual working Arizonans who lack health care to even have a chance to plan to go. They had the meeting in a CHURCH in a Retirement Community of all places. I am livid at the way this entire thing has been twisted and presented as all about seniors and medicare.

      Livid.

      Assorted Sun City Facts:
Sun City is an unincorporated area within Maricopa County, it is not a city, and therefore there is no city government.

The community of Sun City was created as an active, senior retirement community and maintains a Federal Age Overlay whereby the age limitation is built into the deed restrictions. At least one resident of a Sun City property must be 55, and anyone under 19 cannot live in a Sun City residence.

Sun City has many community centers, one of which is 77,000 square feet. Any one of these centers could have hosted this “Town Hall” instead of it being held in a religious institution.
