Did Glenn Beck forget that he called Obama a "racist"?

August 27, 2009 4:32 pm ET by Eric Boehlert

And does the fact that nearly 40 advertisers have abandoned his program in response to a grassroots campaign have anything to do with Beck's sudden bout of monumental amnesia?

I ask because watch this clip below of Beck on Bill O'Reilly's show this week and watch as the two men bemoan the attempts by nasty liberals "loons" to shut Beck up; to snatch away his Freedom of Speech.

What's rather astonishing is that while Beck and O'Reilly clearly make (indirect) references to the ad boycott campaign, they never explain to viewers what sparked the outrage. They never explain why. They never explain the campaign was launched in direct response to the fact that Beck went on national television and called the President of the United State a "racist"; somebody who flashed a "deep-seated hatred of white people."

At Fox News, that smear has been flushed down the memory hole, and all that's left is playing victim.

There is a lot of this on Fox. O'Reilly is returning the favor from when Beck helped him obscure why people were upset about his Tiller comments. Fox viewers don't expect context, just the talking point du jour.

Since Beck feels he is guaranteed the freedom to say what he thinks are such innocuous things, why doesn't he call the president a racist more often? Why don't we hear more declarations of Obama's hatred for white people?

        Excellent question!

Surely, Fox News Channel made it clear to Beck that he can go ahead and keep insisting that Obama has a "deep-seated hatred of white people." Heck, here's Fox News' endorsement right here: "as with all commentators in the cable news arena, he is given the freedom to express his opinions."

So it begs the question, why is this wimp pretending it never happened and why is he seemingly backing away from his firmly held belief? The reason, I believe, is that he is afraid of the court of public opinion, and he never actually believed his assertion to begin with. He just said it for shock value and now he's scared to death that he's about to get run over by the free market money train.

This is what your "Media" has become folks...

A Fever Swamp of corporate cretins like Beck (he makes what, $30 million a year?) babbling on, playing the victim, lying and smearing at will, inciting violence, making a mockery of journalism and whoring the public airwaves.

This is the "New America," when big money controls your media and brings on the filth and right-wing propaganda.

        Agreed.

Somehow we've got to correct this situation or we'll all be worse off.

Sites like MM do a great job as do some others and attempt to keep the media honest. It is very, very frustrating to see and hear such misinformation and outright lies put out over the airwaves.

Becky, you have every "right" to say anything you want, and advertisers have every right to drop you like a fart in the wind. Quit playing stupid....unless, of course, you're not playing.

Proof that MMFA works. Becky has backed off, I'm sure he's confused as to what to do. His corporate masters tell him one thing, his advertiser boycott tells him another. I'd hate to be a producer on that show. That chalk board bit was through the looking glass.

He's too busy begging people to watch his show to even attempt remembering why they left in the first place.

Personally, I agree with a lot of you that he probably doesn't even buy half the stuff he says, it's pure shock value. Unfortunately, there are people out there who actually listen to him and take his word as fact.

Vann Jones...What Moe and larry fail to tell you:

      Early activism

In 1992, during a protest of the Rodney King verdict in San Francisco, police officers illegally arrested Jones and hundreds of other participants in a peaceful protest march[8]. Jones, at the time a law student at Yale Law School, participated as a volunteer, legal monitor. The District Attorney later dropped the charges against Jones. The unlawfully arrested protesters, including Jones, won a small legal settlement[8][9]. The incident deepened Jones's "disaffection with the system and accelerated his political radicalization"[8].

Ella Baker Center for Human Rights

In 1995, Jones started Bay Area PoliceWatch, the region's only bar-certified hotline and lawyer-referral service for victims and survivors of police abuse. PoliceWatch began as a project of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights, but by 1996 had grown big enough to seed a new umbrella NGO, the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights.

From 1996-1997, Jones and PoliceWatch led a successful campaign to get officer Marc Andaya fired from the San Francisco Police Department. Andaya was the lead officer responsible for the in-custody death of Aaron Williams, an unarmed black man. In 1999 and 2000, Jones was a major leader in the failed campaign to defeat Proposition 21, which sparked a vibrant youth and student movement that made national headlines. In 2001, Jones and Ella Baker Center launched the Books Not Bars campaign. From 2001-2003, Jones and Books Not Bars led a successful campaign to block the construction of a proposed "Super-Jail for Youth" in Oakland's Alameda County. Books Not Bars later went on to launch a statewide campaign to transform California's juvenile justice system. That campaign is still winning major reforms.[

I didn't play the clip because I don't want to be affected by second-hand stupid, but did they seriously do the "freedom of speech" thing? Anyone that stupid should be booted off national television, which they don't have a constitutional right to.

Glenn Beck did not say that Obama is a racist. He said... I THINK he may be a racist. Big difference. We, like you, are entitled to opinions. At least we are today. We'll see if we get shut up when Obama's civil "army" is mobilized and the REAL Czar of the USSA shows his true colors.

You are right, of course. he is entitled to his opinion. And we are entitled to believe that Beck is a complete @ss. We are also entitled to contact his advertisers and tell them that we don't think they should associate themsleves with someone with such completely objectionable opinions.

That is, of course, not a constitutionally protected right, since the First Amendment does not guarantee free speech, actually - it prohibits the government from enacting laws to restrict freedom of speech.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

This distinction escapes a lot of people on both sides of the aisle.

Exactly, this is why I have a problem with the boycott against Glenn Beck. The leading proponent of this boycott happens to be an organization very close to the Obama administration. Van Jones was presidient of this "community organization" only 2yrs ago. Of course he would never not longer have any connections to ColorOfChange so he would never have the influence to have them establish this boycott.

An individual has every right to support of boycott any person, company, etc that is the liberty we have been given. I do,however, have a problem when our government sends in their cronies to do what is unlawful for them to do. (At least it's supposed to be)

Many personalities on both radio & tv say things not everyone agrees with or supports. Why does that call for a boycott? Aren't the liberal the one's who say, "if you don't like what's on the television turn the channel"? Where in the Constitution is your right NOT to be offended?

Olbermann called Bush a Fascist. so what? Our president thinks people who speak out against his national healthcare plants. When the president dismisses the viewpoints of the very people he is serving what does that say? It says a whole lot more then Glenn Beck on a talk show that's for sure!!

Big Beck: Goes over 3 million viewers, beats O’Reilly in demo: Cable News Ratings for Wednesday, August 26, 2009
Posted on 27 August 2009 by Robert Seidman

"Though a little scandal might alienate advertisers, it’s pure ratings gold. Last night Glenn Beck had over 3 million viewers at 5pm, second only to O’Reilly for the night. But, Beck had more 25-54 viewers than O’Reilly (888K to 876K). I don’t watch or really even care about the cable news wars, but still…wow. Even though Beck airs before primetime, when there are fewer people watching TV, he had the most 25-54 viewers in the cable news world for the night."

I'm trying to follow you, but the morass of incorrect spelling and hideous grammer leads me to wonder why I should take anything you say seriously. Either you didn't make it past third grade, or nothing past third grade stuck.

I mean, "READ are u Blind!!!", "THEY WHERE RIGHT", "progress there cause", "precident Obama" (that's a double-word score; no idea how to spell or capitalize).

The occasional typo is one thing; being unable to form coherent sentences is ridiculous, particularly when you are trying to convince other people that they lack an understanding you believe you possess.

I hate to admit this, but I have a step-brother that possesses an IQ of about 75. He also owns a pistol and has not, according to his sister, missed a Beck program since the Prince of Poison started his gig at Fox. I'd say if Becky has 3 million viewers for each show, how many are twins to my step-brother? Getting Becky off TV should not be a free speech issue, but instead a "yelling fire in a crowded theater" issue. WTF FCC.
