Halperin demonstrates how not to report on Obama’s school speech “controversy”

September 04, 2009 1:12 pm ET by Matt Gertz

Is there any accusation that could be made about President Obama that Beltway reporters wouldn’t be willing to credulously report? Is there anything that would make them frame their reporting of those accusations around the premise that the charges are ridiculous? Today, Time’s Mark Halperin suggests there is not.

Under the headline “Student Speech Courts Controversy,” Halperin writes: “Critics accuse the president of imposing a political agenda on children during next week’s address.” That is how he has decided to frame the conservative movement’s bizarre, unhinged attack on the President of the United States for his terrifying plan to… tell the nation’s students that it’s important to stay in school and work hard. It’s a “Controversy”! The president has “critics”! Are their criticisms legitimate? Who knows! There’s a link to an AP article on the “controversy” if you actually want some of those dreadful details.

It’s worth noting that in claiming their criticisms hinge on fears that Obama is planning to “impos[e] a political agenda on children,” Halperin is significantly soft-peddling the lunatic whack-a-doo tin-foil conspiracy nut nature of conservatives’ complaints. They aren’t saying Obama will teach kids about the importance of universal health care or stopping global warming – they’re accusing the president of engaging in Maoist indoctrination in an attempt to create his own Hitler Youth.

There is something wrong with these people. As long as Beltway reporters like Halperin keep treating their complaints as valid, they will maintain a hold on our discourse that prevents serious discussion of actual issues. And no, reporting that “critics” say that Obama is planning to indoctrinate students but the Obama administration denies it does not suffice. Resorting to “he said/she said” journalism when one side’s claims are blatantly ridiculous is just pathetic.

And then the TMZ-style press made of Mark Halperins and Jake Tappers will then report next week that "somehow" these crazy notions have made it into mainstream news cycles and just won't go away.

They will claim to be innocent bystanders and admit to no culpability to allowing death panels, Obama is a Kenyan and child indoctrination to become mainstream ideas.

how about 'it's not that we want to report on it but, the public demands it'
I just love that one. You know the public is actually demanding that we have a real press again like it was 40 years or so ago.

I can't believe the media is doing anything other than mocking these people. This is possibly even more ridiculous than the birther crap. What is the problem with the Prez telling kids to study hard and stay in school? It's not exactly a controversial message.

Partly this is the "working the refs" part of the "rights" strategy that enables this stuff to hit the MSM.

Between talk radio & FauxNews, the right can gin up anything they want and for some reason it's treated as legitimate news and debate. Dems could not generate any where near the kind of coverage for BS that the right can.

It's going to be a long 4 years and make any democratic proposals hard going forward.

I can only hope that there is some way that the purveyors of this crazy talk can be held accountable via FCC license revocation or other penalties

The wingnuts would have a field day with that strategy. "The Stalinist Muslim Saul-Alinsky-worshiping black guy is stifling our free speech!"

      How does this work?
Are there guidelines for who can address the nations school children?
      Somewhere is it written:
      Republican presidents = Good
      Democratic presidents = Evil
      I guess I just don't get it.

Also, has someone leaked the speech contents or something?
Everything I hear, from the Whitehouse, is that the speech is going to be about why kids need to stay in school and get an education.
If I go by the media reports, it doesn't even sound like that is on the agenda.
"Imposing a political agenda on our children."
"Teach kids about the importance of universal health care"
"Teach kids how to stop global warming"
      Etc, etc.

      Gee, my head hurts.
      (and my stomach is upset)

St. Ronnie's son, also named Ron, is a liberal talk show host in Seattle and on Air American (which I guess makes him Ron the Apostate). I'll be honest and saw it took me a long time to get past his name, but he makes a lot of good points.

Anyway, he said the real issue is probably that these wingnuts are afraid that their kids will hear what the president has to say and like him, that they'll notice that he is in fact a nice man.

And if that happens, maybe the kids will wonder what else their parents and their idols on the radio and cable TV are telling them that's complete BS.

And I'm guess what's what they mean by "indoctrination", that Obama's speaking as a reasonable person will undercut their own hysterical indoctrination. It's another right-wing Orwellianism (blacks and latinas are the real racists, liberals are Nazis, etc., etc.).

If I remember correctly I don't think Ron Jr. nor his sis Patty Davis voted for their dad. Wonder what dinner converation was like.
