Six new advertisers reportedly join Beck boycott, brings total to 62

September 09, 2009 5:54 pm ET by Media Matters staff

From a September 9 ColorofChange.org press release:

ColorOfChange.org today confirmed that six new companies whose ads aired recently during Fox News Channel's Glenn Beck program have pledged to not to run ads on the show going forward. The additions -- Aegon, Ashley Furniture, Humana, Luxottica Retail (retail parent of LensCrafters and Pearle Vision), United States Postal Service and Wyeth Consumer Healthcare -- bring the number of companies boycotting Glenn Beck to 62. ColorofChange.org launched its campaign against Beck last month after the Fox News Channel host called President Obama a "racist" who "has a deep-seated hatred for white people" during an appearance on Fox & Friends.

WOW, 6 Advertisers in one day?
Hey Glenn, Be sure to go on Bill O'Reilly tonight and make that Senate Approved Sunstein Pay.
Nevermind that your show is almost Commercial Free.
Watching you make a Complete Fool of yourself is still Must See TV.

      Speak truth to power.

I think it's so funny that all you liberals do is talk about Glenn Beck. Does he scare you that much? Who cares if advertisers are pulling out. He's still one of the most watched people on TV and Radio and is on the most watched channel. Air America didn't make it because no one connected to the message. People connect to Glenn Beck. Contrary to what I know you are going to say about me next, I am a woman married to a minority immigrant. I am not racist. I simply do not agree with Obama.

I have a question for jentuazon. If, as you say, "people connect to Glenn Beck" why did Obama and the Democrats win so overwhelmingly in November? I'm not trying to rub it in, I'm just asking for your thoughts.

Please provide your personal definition of "overwhelmingly". One dictionary definition is "extremely large: extremely large in amount or proportion". Obama won the popular vote by 52.92%. On what planet is that overwhelming?

            I'm just asking.

Let's try to be reasonable shall we? The Independents had Nader running for pity's sake! Where else were they going to go? The Democrats had a lot of help. Please do not marginalize Independents.

Some of us are only interested in facts. We can wade through the hyperbole just fine thank you.

Air America is still on the radio, and as well, one of its founders is now a U S Senator.
Fox had to buy its way into the cable market, at the beginning paying cable companies to put their channel one. Murdoch invest billions (with a b) and many many years before the channel became profitable.

Also, we are not afraid of Beck at all. We are simply putting our free market principles to work.

Your mistake. He is on the most watched cable news channel. He doesn't hold a candle to regular network TV. All the regular broadcast TVchannels beat him easily.

He scares all of us because he lies so much and people believe him.

He doesn't scare us per se; it's a combination of schadenfreude watching a pathetic excuse for a human being becoming a perpetual train wreck tinged by amusement and bafflement at his lunatic scribblings. If there's any fear, it's apprehension regarding how someone of Beck's caliber can not only maintain a moneyed forum for his drivel, bit also attract followers. He may be losing advertisers, but he still gets a paycheck from ol' Rupert.

Glenn's audience consists of the following:

22% are Americans who hate liberals, blacks, and think the South should have won the Civil war. They are super religious and will pray for the President's demise. They are the birthers, deathers, tea baggers that can be whipped into a frenzy whenever Glenn wants to show angry American citizens. Age range from 59 - 89

12% are students using Glenn's show and hate speeches as Thesis projects for their Master's Degree in Aberrant behavior. Age range from 22 -32

32% are people who watch because they either lost their remote and are too lazy to get up and change the channel or people who think that Glenn Beck is a comedy show like The Daily Show. Age range 1 - 99

34% are journalists, civil rights organizations, and media watchdog groups like MMFA that keep track of all the vile things he says. Age range 24 - 65

That is the unoffical breakdown of Glenn's audience.

I have a right to say what I said and he has every right to say what he wants, of course, but he works in an advertising based field . . . the advertisers don't have to place ads on his program.

Don't get your hopes up. The rest seems to be a mix of Gold dealers, fox affliates, the weekly standard, conservative interest groups (iwf), Loan modification companies, and diabetic supply companies... It's pretty weak...

That being said. I have a question. What now? I had this fear when I heard about the Beck Boycott... I mean after the elation... I thought this could escalate and even further polarize the country. I worried about progressive grocery stores, and cell phone providers, and conservative verisons of the same... I know that's extreme. But I have to confess to freaking out when I heard of the conservative boycott of the advertisers that left Beck... So what now? Are we back to square one, waiting for a meltdown>?... Shouldn't the focus, the pressure, have been on the conservative media and conservative public figures to denounce Beck?... Any thoughts?

He endangers the very transmission of ideas through a society by chronically exaggerating historical perspective, using sarcasm as a permanent means of communication, and distorting the differences between what is a truth, and what is a lie... He is using misinformation as a means to change public policy. He is profiting off divisions in our society, that he is actively working to encourage.

Jones has said many racist things. Olbermann has said many hateful things when using the same measuring stick applied to Beck.

Jones has said many things that are untrue and you are kidding yourself if you think otherwise. Do you really believe the white man is putting poison in black communities? Do you really believe the white man is spraying poison on the backs of immigrant workers?

Regarding Olbermann I can't think of anything off the top of my head where he said something untrue. Then again I'm not too concerned about that.

Quick challenge: Name one thing that Beck has said that proves he is a racist or hatemongerer. It can't be any of these quotes where he's saying things in jest either. Show me a quote in context that proves that Glenn Beck is a racist.

Brownfields have sprung up disproportionately in minority communities. If you don't believe that check out some stories coming out of E. St. Louis, Ill. and various places in Louisiana and Texas. Texas A&M tried to put an industrial hog farm right next door to black community outside of College Station. In Holmes County, Mississippi black-owned organic farms lost a whole crop because of careless spraying by adjacent cotton farms.

              2. "The white polluters and the white environmentalists are essentially steering poison into the people of color communities."

Well, I guess I can only provide two racist quotes where he specifically brings up skin color. The other quotes I found sum up his belief that present day white people should pay for the sins of past slavery.

Let me also be clear that these two quotes alone don't make Van Jones a racist by my definition. I believe to be a racist you must think that one person can be better than another person based on the color of their skin. These quotes don't fit that definition.

Do you get my point, though? I never labeled Olbermann a racist or hatemonger. The only time I bring up Olbermann concerning racism or hate speech is by comparison to Beck.

I could honestly care less about Olbermann. That's one of the fundamental differences between a liberal and a conservative. I hear Olbermann say something outrageous that I don't agree with and I laugh it off and forget about it. If Beck says something outrageous that you (not you personally) don't agree with it's time to label him a racist and try to get him off the air.

Here is another really important difference: the looniest of the left-wing loons are called pacifists. They don't own guns. They don't know how to make bombs. The looniest of the right-wing loons own guns, know how to make bombs.

Keith Olbermann can work as hard as he wants at inciting left-wing loons and chances are very slim that any of them will take a shot at a Doctor, or a security guard, or a cop (let alone an elected official).

When Beck spews his rhetoric about fascism, socialism, detention camps and couples that with talk about a president he believes is racist and pursuing an agenda of reparations for slavery, he is holding a match to a keg of gunpowder.

Then, after the explosion, he will say "It wasn't my gunpowder, and i was only holding a match to it."

KO doesn't lie or misrepresent the truth unlike the numerous times Glenn Beck has been cuaght stretching the truth into a lie. This site is full of examples of him doing this. So you can go on about KO but until you provide proof your just blowing smoke. And as far as the creatures of the second amendment that think it's ok to carry assault weapons in the vicinity of the President of the USA that has come from the right(no need to go back 50yrs. to find and example)as had the lies about Obama and his birthplace.

This site is mostly full of Beck giving reasons why he believes what he believes. Not outright lies.

As for outrageous KO quotes I'll give you a few:

"And since Fixed News has since now migrated completely over to serving propaganda to tin foil hatters, conspiracy theorists, paranoids and racists it is not a news organization making this show the highest rated cable news program, period." - If it's racist to call somebody racist then KO is a racist and a liar here as he isn't anywhere close to the highest rated cable news program.

"Thanks for invoking that image again. You, Beck, are one of the cowards, safely on the ground, telling the nut job on the plane it is time to, quote, ‘Rise up.' You remember March 19, right? You probably don't." - Another personal attack against Beck since he can't argue against him in the arena of ideals.

Now you post some "outrageous" Beck quotes. Everytime I ask for anything that proves Beck is a hatemonger or racist nobody seems to come through.

calling the president of the USA a racist that hates white people and white culture. There right off the top of my head! Shzz name one thing that Beck has said that is true?

They want to silence Glenn Beck because they don't like what he's saying and it just so happens that a couple of remarks he made violated the don't call a black man racist sufficiently that advertisers found themselves in a place where being on Glenn Beck's show was economically or ideologically not a good idea any more.

Frankly, I've never understood the visceral insult that Beck's remarks on Obama and racism must be for blacks.

For me absolutely going beyond beyond the pale comment was Beck's skit where he pretended to have put poison in a glass of wine that he gave to Pelosi. That is totally wacked out time. He should have been fired on the spot for that.

Even without these two examples, I'd still want to silence Beck. As others have written, Beck's views, way of reasoning and take no prisoners approach does no service to debate and attempt at rationally making policy decisions by anyone. He's proving that being a nut case is good for ratings and making the less crazy nuts such as Limbaugh head Beck's way.

So yeah, I want to silence Beck for his views.

What is it with the right and their love of everything Thomas Jefferson?
Jefferson, when you look beyond a simple high school sketch of the man, was pretty complex and full of human failings. In fact, I doubt the right would embrace a man like Jefferson today. And I doubt, were Jefferson alive now, he'd have anything to do with the right.

I'm not sure what you mean about the right loving Thomas Jefferson. I rarely hear anybody talk about any Founders, period.

I believe Thomas Jefferson would be a conservative if alive today. I cannot find a single quote that would place Jefferson on the left side of the aisle. Everything I read about him would have him somewhere on the right.

Beck should be able to say anything he wants. Our constitution gives him that right. I expect that right to be upheld for myself, and for my opponents.

Now, should he be able to say anything he wants, including flat-out lies and egregious distortions of the truth on a mainstream media channel that many people trust to provide honest coverage of current events? Hell no.

When did libel become an acceptable format for news agencies to garner ratings?

Beck lies way more than anyone in the media (except maybe Savage). He is a nutcase and he turns others into loonies like himself.

Beck is smart enough to not use outright racist statements but he regularly panders to racists. For example, his allegation about a secret Black militant army. In this piece he used a Kansas City based youth dance group as an example of a militarized Black army. As far as K.O. he does not make racist statements because like most progressive hosts he has a sensitivity and intellectual integrity that allows him to understand and respect other ethnicities. He works with and regularly has Black guests on his show. The same is true for Rachel Maddow who prior to hosting her show on MSNBC co-hosted a radio program with Chuck D. Hell, Beck admitted to not having any Black friends for fear of offending them. How ignorant is that? He also belongs to a religion that still restricts Black people from becoming priests. Of course mainstream Mormonism now permits Black priests but there are some fundamentalist sects that still have this prohibition. Nice guy huh? He may not be a racist but he definitely has no insight into other ethnicities and seems to have no interest in learning either. This guy should educate himself if has a nation tv show but then again consevatives hate education.

You say all this without knowing a thing about him though! Realistically speaking you don't know squat about his personal life and the things he believes outside of what this site tells you to believe. I would challenge anyone to e-mail him, call him, etc. in an attempt to get either on his radio or television program. Anybody on this site would be humbled by the experience.

And yes, we would be humbled, as any self-respecting person would when conversing with a psychopath for hire.

As far as Van Jones and Beck, all Beck did was show videos of Jones spouting he was a communist and showing he himself is a racist. You guys don't like Fox News because you aren't used to networks actually doing investigative reporting. ABC, NBC & CBS all report what is fed to them from the White House, or they probably find it on the internet, perhaps from you guys.

I talked about this in another post a few months ago. I informed MMFA of the strategy that they would be seeing now. I am not speaking from a guessing perspective either. I am speaking from a study. Cancer is liable to develop in Republican opposers as well. This has always been the strategy for a Democratic President who have favored with policy of the welfare of the United States. Go back and find the number of Republican Presidents that have been assassinated and then you have a story. This party is extremely dangerous and it is run like a mafia.

…why Fox News hasn't given up on Glenn Beck, even as advertisers continue to flee.

These advertisers haven't left FOX, their ad contracts won't allow that. They've just told FOX not to run their ads on that show.
The key moments for FOX and beck will be when these ad contracts come up for renewal. Will FOX manage to keep these 62+ advertisers in their fold, or will they lose them to another outlet? That's when beck will find his ass turned to the fire.
