The right-wing clowning over the bogus claim of 2 million protesters just never ends

September 14, 2009 9:01 am ET by Eric Boehlert

It's the gift that keeps on giving.

The latest guffaws come courtesy of Gateway Pundit, which was last seen spreading the lie that 12,000 people showed up at a Quincy, Ill., tea party on Saturday. (The Quincy cops said the actual figure was 2,000.) Now, Gateway Pundit is still clinging to the thoroughly debunked 2 million mark for the D.C. protest and claiming conservative protesters left D.C. neat and tidy, as compared to the "filthy" 2 million liberals who stormed D.C. for Obama's inauguration and left the city a mess.

Gateway Pundit even has photos to prove it.

Of course the comedy comes from the fact that, according to official D.C. estimate, there were approximately 60,-70,000 anti-Obama protesters in town Saturday, compared to the approximate 2 million who actually did gather on Inauguration Day. Now, which crowd do you think would leave behind more litter, the one that's 70,000 strong, or the one that had 1,930,000 more people?

We'll let Gateway Pundit ponder that one for a while.

Honesty is not a Right-Wing Strong Suit.
If you mention the phrase "Social Justice" they all turn Mute.
What we saw in Washington on Saturday was nothing less than a Klan Rally.
I feel sorry for Ms. McGlowan, she is to ignorant to understand that she is nothing but a Token Sally.

Nothing less that a Klan Rally?

A tad hyberbolic wouldn't you say. Overblown rhetoric is the symptom of a weak argument. Let's leave that to the teabaggers.

We saw a collection of some racist symbols and signs in a gathering of several thousands of people.

You are comparing that to assemblies done in uniforms applying membership to an organization dedicated to illegal, secretive acts of violence who embolden and enflame their members by violent imagery (cross burning) and vitriolic rhetoric intended for the primary purpose of denigrating and sub-humanizing one particular race.

            Really, you're going with that?

So eloquent, so erudite, Mr. News is so sublime,
He waxes so poetic, it makes one feel so fine.
Yet works once deconstructed, aren't always quite so witty,
In fact, if one looks oft enough, you'll see they're mostly . . . .

How about just admitting when you've "gone over the top" next time. Bad analogies set to rhythmic meter isn't "speaking truth to power.

      Let them ponder this too:

If you take the now-infamous traffic-cam photo that is purported to show the streets full of people, and run it through JPEGSnoop (free program, you can check for yourself), it shows that 7 different image editors were used on the "photo." Even if people claim the flag was supposed to be at half mast, there's no claiming that anyone needs 7 different editors for a screenshot.

Each chance I get, I'm reminding all the right-wingers I meet (and the rational people as well) that the very name 9/12 Project (an anti-tax creation) is the personification of exploitation (of the 9/11 attacks - a terrorist attack) and that they are part and parcel to helping put a major wedge between the political discourse of America's people which is not holding her together, it is ripping her apart.

So long as they keep allowing people like Glenn Beck, Fox, and Rush to advocate for it by that name!

I will say that they were neat and tidy. I saw lots of posters in the trash bins on my way out of the event. I got to the thickest part of the crowd in the area near the stage (police controlled entry/exit) and left by going around the side at 1:15ish. I will agree with media estimates. A large crowd, but nothing like the Inaugruation.

A large crowd, but nothing like the Inauguration.

In more ways than one. The Inauguration was an ode to joy, hopefulness, optimism, ideas, renewal and progress. The Tea Parties are all about hate, victimhood, self-pity and anger.

Does Media Matters care about the truth? I have seen the over head shots of the President's inauguration. If that was 1.8 million, then it is ridiculous to report 70K people where in DC on Saturday. There is absolutly no way it was less than 4% of inauguration. Maybe a good low ball estimate would be 350-400k.

More points to ponder on for Gateway Pundit

Misspelled Protest Signs aka the Low Hanging Fruit ...
"With the 9/12 circus rolling into town, here is a nice image summarizing some of the wonderfully mangled language used in protester signs up to date. I'm sure we'll see some more examples in the next few days"

The literal Trash of September 12th, 2009

"After using Publicly Funded Transportation and Publicly Funded Roads to get to the Publicly Funded sidewalks to walk to the Publicly Funded Parks, at the end of their protest, what did these haters of Government Interference do ?"

"They threw their rubbish down for the Publicly Funded garbagemen & women of Washington DC to take care of. Carrying home all those thin sheets of Cardboard was obviously the task of someone with a larger work ethic.

More below, with an added sting."

This is a copy from another post of mine. It applies here also.

The frustration vented by the people at these tea parties is real. There is no doubt about it. And regardless of how Fox continues to lie & twist the facts, the WH has acknowledge this frustration.

Many people don't trust government and are angry with the way things have been run. It is correctly American to think this way.

The tea parties own goals as stated on their web sites are:

      1. "protest of irresponsible fiscal policies and intrusive government"
      http://taxdayteaparty.com/

      2. "highlight some of the worst offenders in Congress who have voted for higher spending, higher taxes, and government intervention in the lives of American families and businesses"
      http://oversight.house.gov/documents/20080724101850.pdf

      Who's not for that?

So, why are the same politicians they claim to be protesting against in the crowds with them, acting like they are part of the protests? Weren't many of these politicians part of the reason we are in this fiscal mess right now?

And, when did this protest switch from the goals their own web sites post, to a razor-sharp focus on Obama, the Democrats, Liberals and HC reform? The Republicans have been part of this problem for years. The Iraq war alone (unnecessary) will sink us for at least $3 trillion.

Fox and the Republicans (the party of stupid) have conned these well-meaning, but ignorant people into thinking this is now about defeating Obama, the Democrats, Liberals and HC reform. They are leading these people on by deflecting the truth about their complicity, to focusing it on the "liberal agenda".

The only way the right-wingers can even get people on their side, is to con them using people's own ignorance and stupidity.

The Republican party is the party of stupid. That's their base, the ignorant and stupid

Probably has more to do with the quality of the attendees, some were decent folk sharing their love of country. The others were more like pigs, sharing in the coronation of an individual.

Either way, a lot of lefties are whistling past the graveyard today, knowing that what happened on Saturday spells their political doom. As same as when they whistled as they saw the Berlin Wall fall.

      Speaking truth to progressives.

No, I highly doubt political doom comes from a very loose, unorganized collection of about 70,000 people.

The quality of the attendees, as you say, were pretty much the "stereotypical" descriptions we've seen. Sure, these folks love their country, but a vast majority are fringers for certain, and a populist movement, this isn't.

The problem with a lot of conservatives is that they're not speaking truth, they're speaking in fallacies and lies. As I saw on Saturday, lots of fibs and ommissions and all. As in, lots of "rah rah" but no substance.

Quality of the attendees? You do remember that 99.9% of these 9/12 teabaggers were lily white while a sizable percentage at Obama's inauguration were black/minority?

Is that what you're trying to say? Equating minorities to pigs?

It was a watered down version of a KKK rally. Lots of ignorant white people protesting the black man being in the White House.

Just for fun, I looked at some of the comments by what I can only assume are regulars at Gateway Pundit. Here's a sweet one:

"Remeber [sic] the White House after the Clintons left."

For any of our readers who are too young to "remeber," Bush came into office in 2001 and some of his stooges started making claims that the White House had been left a shambles by Clinton. Some claimed there was vindictive vandalism (the "W" keys removed from computers), while some claimed that the damage ran into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Rep. Bob Barr (then R), who apparently hadn't been given the memo that the entire episode was made up, called for an official investigation. When this happened, Bush & Co. had to come clean and admit that there was no damage done to the White House. None. Nothing stolen, nothing broken. The White House was immaculate.

This whole piece of villainy was orchestrated by Bush's minions, and he gave silent approval to all of it. If Barr hadn't goofed up, the truth may never have come out, and people would still believe that Clinton had trashed the White House.

Except that, as is shown in the Gateway Pundit comments, some morons really do believe it.

p.s. I've looked farther down in their comments, and there isn't a single one that's willing to challenge the "2 million" canard. My, what a surprise.
