How much ad money has Glenn Beck lost?

September 15, 2009 4:33 pm ET by Eric Boehlert

I just want to re-iterate the point ColorofChange.org made yesterday in its press release regarding the amount of money Glenn Beck is losing in the wake of the sweeping boycott. A Television program simply cannot lose 60 advertisers in the course of a few weeks and not have its bottom line affected. That's just not possible in today's television industry. So please, let's discard the Fox News spin.

As noted a couple weeks ago [emphasis added]:

If the boycott continues to gain momentum, Fox News won't be able to avoid writing down losses. Yes, the cabler claims it hasn't lost any money yet because nervous advertisers simply want off Glenn Beck, not off Fox News (i.e. advertisers are still spending money with the network). But the truth is, since Beck called Obama a racist, Beck's advertising base has been cut by 50 willing advertisers, and Fox News' need to find advertisers for the hour-long weekday show has not changed. And I'm guessing it's not having much luck drumming up new Glenn Beck business in this environment.

Honestly, if advertisers continue to abandon Glenn Beck, pretty soon the show's going to be forced to run more than the occasional free public-service announcement. Either that, or the advertisers willing to stick around are going to get some great deals or maybe even some free spots in order to make sure Fox News can fill the inventory.

It's the old supply and demand: Fox News has the same size supply--the same size ad inventory--for Glenn Beck that it did one month ago. But suddenly it's got 60 fewer adertisers willing to pay for the show. And unless Fox News has been able to keep secret all the new advertisers it's bringing in, guess what? Glenn Beck isn't generating the same revenue it was a month ago. It has lost revenue.

Period.

Here's the graph Gawker posted to showcase Glenn Beck's recent ad revenue losses:

I honestly have a serious question for them...

...seriously, is Glenn Beck really the beacon of truth that is required for America? Really? Or is he just an avenue to use as an excuse to just mouth your disgust at government or THIS administration?

You know what he is calling for, right? STOPPING all government activity until CORRUPTION is erdicated...this is so ludacris, i can't believe he actually said it.

He also wants "56" people who are going to re-something (i forget what he says) the country...is this really the way they feel anything is going to get done?

I personally keep waiting for the day that he will cross the line of no return, where even the Republicans who seem proud to call his name now, would abandom him quicker than you can say, "what the F happened?"

Its like those Republicans don't realize or care that he is actually calling for THEIR OWN POSITIONS IN POWER TO BE DENOUNCED AND CANCELLED OUT.

How selfish some can be...watching all of this from afar makes me sad for the people who buy into his nonsense, but it also, i have to say, makes me very happy i dont live in the USA, as much as i love the country, i couldnt imagine living there right now.

Ratings don't mean a tinker's damn if they cannot be turned into revenue. If the time period is losing money then ratings don't mean squat. Now let's factor in how much this show is costing, and the only conclusion is that Fox is losing money big time in the 60 minutes of the Glen Beck Trainwreck.

Glen is still there for some reason, even though Fox is losing money on him hand-over-fist. I wonder why?

        Keep the pressure on!

I turned on Beck's radio program and beck was advertizing for Goldline. So I Called them 1-866-465-3546.

I waited for an account executive to answer. I told him I heard about them from the beck program. He said that was great. Then I asked him if he knew beck has said President Obama hated white people. He played dumb and said he heard that but wasn't sure it was true. Anyway if you call.

      1. Wait for to connected to new a account executive.
      2. Be respectful, don't make an ass of yourself.
      3. Thank him/her for listening to you. hang up

pbrauer - no matter what you think of Goldline, that seems awfully unfair to the reps taking the call. It's a waste of their time - they're just trying to feed their families.

So will Beck become an hour long commercial free program, giving him about 18 more minutes per hour to pontificate? Or will they (Fox) use that hour to run all their PSA requirements for the day? Or will they lead into and out of the GB 42 minute show with 9 minutes on each end of un-interupted commercials? Some interesting scenarios here. Another would be that GB syndicates and finds a well-heeled (or several) private sponsors. Oh, the possibilites!! Oh well, time to head over to the Dobbs "boycott" fest.

Also consider that as people move off of Beck, people move onto other programs. Therefore, is is plausible to believe Fox's assertion they have not lost any net revenue.

Also consider that many of the advertisers pulled from all political commentary programs, Beck and Olbermann alike. So there is a similar situation with other networks as well.
