Did Glenn Beck watch his own 9-12 rally?

September 17, 2009 3:27 pm ET by John V. Santore

Following a spate of violence associated with the extreme far-right fringe, Glenn Beck has made a point of portraying the 9-12 protesters and those who sympathize with them as peaceful, civil Americans who are simply engaged in a substantive, issues-based disagreement with the Obama administration.

Yesterday on his Fox program, he made that point again, dismissing the idea that racism or violent thoughts had anything at all to do with the conservative opposition to the progressive agenda or the White House. Here's how he put it:

BECK: Do you want -- do you want to call somebody a racist? If you do, you better have some facts to back it up. But in today's America, does anybody even care? Does anybody even ask you, why would you say that? Is anybody asking, why -- how is he suddenly a racist?

NBC did this report last night on the tea party out in Washington, D.C., where people were hugging, singing -- singing national anthems, "Star Spangled Banner," hugging, peaceful, no arrests, zero, no arrest. And yet NBC does this thing of a growing violent crowd. What? Can you back that one up, Brian Williams? Help me out on that one, will you?

Beck's ignorance is deliberate and willful. He is choosing to ignore what is going on at his own events. Consider the following signs from the 9-12 rally, photos courtesy of NineTwelvePhotos on Flickr:

beckrally2

beckrally3 beckrally4

beckrally5 beckrally6

beckrally7 beckrally8

beckrally9 beckrally9

beckrally11 beckrally12

Not to mention the warm welcome that birther Orly Taitz received:

If Beck refuses to see the violence and racism in front of his nose, it's because he doesn't want to acknowledge the true consequences of his work and others in the right-wing media.

Dammit, Eddie, do I have to explain this again??

They're not saying that there is no racism on the right.

They're just angry at people who are saying that all criticism of Obama is racist.

Of course, these people don't exist, and are an invention of the right, but that doesn't make them any less angry at these imaginary people !!

Listen to it again - you didn't hear it if you think that is what he said. Beck said that there may have been some but it was from the fringe groups, some extremists. These pics and videos make it more than clear that it wasn't the fringe. It was the wide majority. And a lot of the vitriol came straight from Beck's gullet. Beck is a liar but he cannot be this ignorant. He was at the event - he must have seen these signs. He is just pulling his usual - I can say anything I want because I don't have to support it with facts routine. What an easy life for someone in the news to never have to be bothered with something so trivial as facts or evidence.

I think you're argument has a logical fault. There is no absolute statement that all of the statements are or are not racist. Are you deliberately ignoring that racism exists?

There is also no implication that any one side "invented" racism. Angry or not, the fact that these events manufactured for one reason of another (the real reason being unclear) brings out factions that seem to lean toward the more unseemly side of the conversation is curious, don't you think?

Love that tag, Becky! Well did anybody notice on Tuesday's Fox, the Becky Hour, he said "A year ago, none of us knew what a community organizer was or did". Now we do, he said. "IT is a pimp that enlists underage girls to prostitute". Our 44 th president was, at one time, a community organizer. This is so off the charts that it needs to be known, and more boycotting, that is the only thing he can understand. Money, he understands, money, so hit him where it hurts! He has the right to think what he wants, and we have the right to not watch the FOX Channel. He even admitted he was not a journalist and did not fact check anything on the View. I do think Fox has a responsibility to have a warning lable prior to, and during his show, that states nothing he says has been vetted!

James O'Keefe, the ACORN filmaker, had referenced Alinsky in an article he had written, and believes conservatives need to use his tactics to take down "power structures"... It is an interesting article and paints a very interesting picture for the conservative's newest whistle blower against corruption. Seems he isn't this innocent little kid who was just doing good. This guy has an agenda, and is using Fox News, and Fox News is allowing it because they both oppose the administration, and together, they are manipulating America to achieve their warped goals... Who are they really helping? Not everyday Americans, but the GOP party...

I think NBC was pointing the growing violent signs that were present at this protest, not that people were violent. That said, Beck is still an idiot and the deniers that there is some racism involved are also idiots. Is it a majority, who really knows? Would we have all this going on if the economy had not sunk under Bush? No one can say for certain, but I suspect we would. We all have a bigot gene in us. For some that gene is dormant, but now I think it has woken up in people and it is Beck and his minions that have woken it up. However, until Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity, etc. actually come out and say Obama is a worthless ni**er, we should just iggy it all and work on getting a good health reform bill passed. When they finally use the N word, and they will, it will be over for them.

Earlier today, it was announced that Time Magazine has put Beck on it's cover. I immediately took 2 actions: cancelled subscription and wrote a letter to the editor of Time explaining why I cancelled my subscription: (in short) Rewarding a Liar is unacceptable!

If we can eliminate funding for Beck on Fox...we should be taking on those who glorify his actions as well! Perhaps a small individual protest, but by holding those accountable who are rewarding his lies should not be tolerated or given a free pass!

I'm just curious. I see several pictures of signs here but considering the number of people that were there I think you would have more like these if they were represenative of the overall attitude of the crowd. Also, if these people were so violent I would greatly appreciate it if you could provide a link to the video that shows this so that I can see it for myself. Finally, if you will check your facts you will find that whatever revenue was lost on the Glenn Beck show by childish boycott activity has more than been made up for by new advertisers. Okay, waiting for the links to those videos.

Things I learned from watching this video:

      * Apparently, the extent of one's patriotism is determined by the number of articles of American-flag-based clothing worn at any given time. (Bonus: being morbidly obese gives you more surface area on which to display said patriotic clothing.)

      * This is America. If you can't speak English, then get the hell out. On the other hand, if you're a natural-born citizen who can't even string five English-language words together to create a comprehensible posterboard-and-magic-marker sign, then by all means...

      * Orly Taitz has the soothing voice of an angel.

      * Four out of five white, middle-aged, Hawaiian-shirt-wearing protesters support tort reform.

      * America is the greatest country in the world. Only in the USA could an immigrant like Orly Taitz, armed only with a law degree from an unaccredited correspondence school, seek the ouster of the rightfully-elected President based on a phony Nigerian birth certificate she drew freehand in crayon on the back of an IHOP kids' menu.

By the way: the camouflage-wearing guy standing just behind Orly Taitz in the YouTube clip? None other than veteran comedian Jonathan Winters.

I noticed a poster at the top that said "Kenya Born Keep Pressure On Alinski"

I found this interesting because Fox's favorite investigative journalist James O'Keefe, who brought us the ACORN videos, references Alinski heavily in his article for the New Guard Magazine, in which O'Keefe wrote that activists must do "whatever necessary to disrupt and annoy power structures, applying constant pressure and opposition".

He also mentions that activists "need to be their own media, and use their independent media to obtain their goals."

It does not sound like issue driven debate, but outright conservative activist attacks on "power structures"...

With all the focus on the goofy left getting routed by Glenn Beck, little attention has been paid to the media's worst purveyor of hate -- Keith Olbermann. Apparently the concept of hypocrisy is lost on him, because while bleating about the lack of civility in public discourse today, he spends every night calling people racists, cowards and liars. He even called John McCain a coward, raising the delicious fantasy of Obermann being tortured for five years and seeing how well he'd bounce back. Obermann is a prime candidate for the c-word himself, since unlike nemesis Bill O'Reilly he never brings on a guest who might disagree with him, preferring to stack his nightly lineup with lockstep liberals and sycophants. As a political intellect, he's a great sports anchor.

Orly knows that even if what she has is fake she'll still get press. Maybe she just wants her 15 minutes of fame to last her lifetime? Most of the O'Rellys, Becks and Rushes in this world do it so they can bask in the glow of being famous. They enjoy making people mad and they are not the first nor will they be the last. They just prove we need to decide for ourselves what is true and what is fiction. Many times the Fiction is much more comforting than the Truth. But that doesn't mean its right. The Truth can hurt. Now that said. I do not believe what comes out of Fox.. I also don't take sock in what comes from most Media outlets. All are biased in one way or another. There is no truly unbiased thought.

IMHO Orly just wants the attention, if we ignore her and her ilk they'll go away...

What...you are calling these people RACISTS? Go ahead, see how that works out for ya.

You just want these White Americans to hurry up and die so you can so you can start your communist utopia. But every time they assemble, you realize that we're not quite there yet. That makes you very angry.

You think that if you could sufficiently FORCE egalitarian and multi-racial dogma on enough people that you could "re-program" them into believing that they actually want it. Why don't they just cooperate, you wonder.

Keep it up leftists. Keep calling regular White people RACISTS because they don't agree with your agenda! You're doing a good job of stirring much needed activism.

Its disgraceful that Nancy Pelosi and Jimmy Carter tried to be honest about their concerns and are villified despite the facts and evidence supporting their claims...Carter said the majority of the animosity towards the president was about racism..He didn't say the majority of the opposition!!!!.What I took is he meant the majority of the bad behavior is being fuelled by racism!!The signs, slurs and name calling certainly are there at every rally,or town hall meeting etc.No doubt some of it is bad partisan behavior but way too much is racial/cultural/racist!!!
Right wing hate speech has already spawned violence in Knoxville,Pittsburgh,DC and Kansas City THIS year!!!How can anyone sane not agree with Nancy Pelosi that we need to ratchet back the rheoric but somehow(per Fox News/Right wing talk radio,) she becomes the catalyst for it!!!

First go to the board of directors web pages for Fox news- see who is who- then focus in on New Corporation" see what role they play in Fox News. Then look at their mission statement. Then realize that fox news Beck, Oreilly. etc...are in violation of this mission statement. Then it should start dawning on people that are slandered on fox that they can actually take them to court and sue for defamation of character and libel and slander. The media doesn't have a free reign to say whatever they want about whoever they want they never did. We are not going to be able to fight this with words, a man who wrote "Crazy for God" was interviewd on MSNBC and Rachel Maddow asked "Well how do you get this people to move along and want to see progress in this country? (something like that not a direct quote} his answer "you don't they will never get on board. You don't reorganize the village to accomidate the village idiot" In the words oif a true South Carolinian AMEN!

Those posters are inappropriate and stupid, but hardly racist. Thinking the guy was born in Africa is not a racist statement. His father is from Africa. My mother is from Scotland. Should I be offended if people think I was born there? Of course not. Stop finding racism under every rock and around every corner.
