Candid Camera: Behind the scenes video at 9/12 protest shows Fox News producer coaching crowd

September 18, 2009 6:50 pm ET by Karl Frisch

We just received the following behind the scenes footage from an anonymous tipster showing what appears to be a Fox News producer encouraging a crowd to scream and holler during a "report" by Fox News' Griff Jenkins at the 9/12 protest:

Here's how it looked on Fox News:

We would expect that type of behavior from a producer of, say, a daytime talk show with a live studio audience like Oprah or Maury or Jerry, but from a cable news producer? Really?

I guess it wasn't enough for Fox News to promote the hell out of Glenn Beck's 9/12 death march – they also needed to incite the crowd – you know, get them nice and pumped up so they'd looked good for the cameras.

Fair & Balanced? More like Fake & Staged.

Sigh.

That reminds me of 'Broadcast News' where the producer shoots Tom (William Hurt) a second time with a tear in his eye to heighten a story. They found that despicable in that film, here it's just another day at the Fox office.

I hate to say it but Griff Jenkins will probably get a Raise.
This kind of behavior is called "Making your Bones" at Fox.
Call somebody the "N" word (Mark Furman) and you're Hired.
Get caught with a Prostitute (Dick Morris) & you're an Analyst.
Be a Traitor to your Country (Ollie North) & you get your own Show.
Call the President of the United States a Racist (Glenn Beck) & you're Worshiped.
At Fox News as long as it hurts Minorities or President Obama "It's All Good"

A while ago, I started putting quote around news in FOX 'News'. Now, they've finally crossed even that line, and are now FOX Propaganda. Congratulations on all your hard work, FOX. You really know how to create the news.

I find it entertaining that Gelnn Beck had accused the Obama administration of using the NEA for propaganda, but it appears Fox News is the one manufacturing their news...

I actually witnessed a FOX producer trying to whip up a crowd applause for Geraldo Rivera on a live broadcast one day in New York. Everyone laughed at him instead...

There is no level that this organization will not stoop to. This only affirms why they don't have an ounce of credibility or live up to any journalistic ethics or standards. But Fox isn't really about news anyway, its more about infotainment and misinformation than anything else.

Doesn't this story begin with what appears to be rather than what is...i.e. "an anonymous tipster showing what to be a Fox News producer encouraging a crowd"

I guess I don't get the point...why would you post this and simultaneously accuse Fox News of being misleading, hmmm

Makes this little gem worth another visit:

Former Fox News reporter Jon Du Pre:

"Ronald Reagan's birthday was something akin to a holy day. This was Ronald Reagan's birthday. So my assignment was to go to the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley California, and to do live shots before dawn until dark. There weren't very many people at the Presidential Library. There wasn't a celebration in any organized way going on. You know there was a class of fourth graders who came to the library that day to take the tour and they were lined up and they sang happy birthday. But that was pretty much the extent of the celebration. They saw my first three or four live shots and Mr. Moody called in to say, 'what is he doing out there?' Apparently, my live shots weren't celebratory enough. And I was frankly at a bit of a loss as to what to say, or do to make it seem like there was a big celebration. So I got in trouble for that one. I got in big trouble for that one, in fact I was suspended."

And you think this is different than CNN, ABC, CBS????

I consider myself an objective viewer of both sides and I see everyone taking sides rather than demanding that both sides put facts and proof (not just bytes) to support their statements and then hopefully everyone will be able to decide for themselves.

We're getting out of hand here...

Reporting this won't matter to the helpless minions of Fox News. This would just be considered another smear tactic from the left, attempting to silence the "majority" of Americans...

As I have seen on this website, conservatives will just make claims that those reporting on situations like this are just shooting the messenger. Fox already aired their initial story, and to those who mindlessly follow, there is no changing their minds, but I hope this serves as a reminder, along with the ACORN scam videos, just what kind of propaganda machine Fox News really is...

I am a left-leaning Independent. I like this site. I really do. I like the accountability it holds people to. However sometimes I feel it makes mountains out of molehills, especially with things like this. This is a common practice whens shooting in front of live crowds. The voice over the loudspeaker and what the dude is actually saying is most likely separated by a gap of a few seconds, as there is a mandatory delay in live broadcasts. Without prompting, the crowd would start cheering at awkward or inopportune times. You can call it fake or whatever, but I bet you'd find it with any number of live broadcasts.

This isn't the sort of thing we should focus our attention to. When we start attacking dumb crap like this, we stoop to the level of the Becks and Hannities. There's bigger fish to fry people, c'mon.

I don't understand why this is even necessary, having somebody coaching the teabaggers when to get excited. Aren't the Pavlovian responses pretty well set after years of watching the propaganda channel and learning the buzzwords?

OK, I just played the clip again. He has "pledge" and "Americans" in there, but he does go that 20 seconds without saying "freedom", "flag", "values", "Constitution" or "God" so some of the wingnuts may have started watching the clouds drift by.

Are you kidding me? With all the MAJOR bias in the media, and you worry about someone "showing what appears to be a Fox News producer encouraging a crowd to scream and holler"?

Did you see the huge number of people attending that rally? I doubt anyone past the 3rd row could even see her!

According to Huffington Post, the woman in question was an associate producer (I may have title wrong) and has since been reprimanded.

To which I say, "probably for being caught." Stands to reason no one does those kind of things without approval from higher ups. Surely the bigger producers on scene saw her doing this.

She'll be reprimanded like Kilmeade was reprimanded for his "interracial/interspecies" remark on Fox & Friends.

Also, can I have the lip gloss concession at Fox News? I'd make a mint!

What does it say about Faux Noise: ethics, standards, even training of its people? For anyone to do such a thing and have to be "reprimanded" (Yeh, right!) about it?

Any decent "news" organization would have prevented such activities in the first place.

Maybe the reason for this is so the Griff Jenkins can be heard on television... Instead of being drowned out by the crowd like when CNN covered the 9/12 protest? The crowd is told to quiet down and then make noise at certain times because you can't take multiple takes of something that is live.

This sort of thing happens during College Gameday on ESPN. A person tells you they are gonna go live in a couple seconds and tells you when to make noise so a live shot is not ruined.

This should be a major story! I mean MAJOR, along with FOX news getting the death of Kaelke wrong and pushing a bogus number for the tea party protesters! None of the major news organizations should talk about global warming or health care or the jobless rate! They should talk about this story! It's major!

If the networks don't cover this story 24/7 it shows their conservative bias!

(How was that for a left-wing version of the tea baggers who think we should only talk about ACORN?)

Maybe you should investigate what was going on behind the camera at those Acorn offices- probably someone coaching them to lie extra loud!!
