Irony is dead: Fox News exec urges staffers to be "fair" and "impartial"

September 21, 2009 4:41 pm ET by Eric Boehlert

Mediaite has an internal from managing editor Bill Sammon. It's in response to the (shocking!) revelation that at least one member of the Fox News team was whipping up the 9/12 crowd prior to a live report, pretending it was a studio audience. Which, of course, it pretty much was considering Fox News was an unofficial sponsor of the event.

But the video has been a huge embarrassment. (Hey, live by raw video, die by raw video, right?) So Sammon typed up a memo and said all the things that normal journalists would say in this situation. The funny part, of course, is that Fox News no longer practices journalism. Instead, it's transformed itself into the Opposition Party of the Obama White House, so Sammon's supposedly straight-faced pleas for impartiality read more like a clever parody.

I'll simply highlight my favorite phrases from the up-is-down memo. Feel free to chuckle along.

From Mediaite:

Subject: standards

For those of us who have only been at Fox for a relatively short period of time, it’s useful to remind ourselves that, as journalists, we must always be careful to cover the story without becoming part of the story. At news events, we’re supposed to function as dispassionate observers, not active participants. We are there to chronicle the news, not create it.

That means we ask questions in a fair, impartial manner. When approaching interviewees, we identify ourselves, by both name and news organization, up front. We seek out a variety of voices and views. We take note of the scene in order to bring color and context to our viewers.

We do not cheerlead for one cause or another. We do not rile up a crowd. If a crowd happens to be boisterous when we show it on TV, so be it. If it happens to be quiet, that’s fine, too. It’s not our job to affect the crowd’s behavior one way or the other. Again, we’re journalists, not participants — and certainly not performers.

Indeed, any effort to affect the crowd’s behavior only serves to undermine our legitimate journalistic role as detached eyewitnesses. Remember, our viewers are counting on us to be honest brokers when it comes to reporting — not altering –the important events of the day. That is nothing less than a sacred trust. We must always take pains to preserve that trust.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss this further, please stop by.

        Dear Bill Sammon:
        You are a lying hypocrite.

How disingenuous of you to send out a memo knowing you do not have any intentions of being “fair and balanced”. How long has Fox News been promoting protest and creating News? Your reporters and talk show hosts targeted for termination Acorn an organization out to help the poor. You brought down Van Jones for personal reasons and your hosts said they won’t stop there. Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly and sicko Glen Beck willfully use their high-profile position to lie and misrepresent everything the President stand for and does. Each one of them has a problem with this black President.
You send out reporters out to ambush people for interviews.
You allow your reporters to interject themselves into a story and advocate against the President of the United States, while the world is watching. One of your talk show hosts is obviously unstable, yet you allow him to keep his job after he said the President “is racist and he has a deep seeded hatred for white people”. This is outrageously irresponsible and dangerous and you should be ashamed.
You have another talk show host who has a disturbing obsession with the President; in fact, he proclaimed he is determined to bring down this administration. Is this what you call journalism? Is this what you call News?
Your letter is a joke. How can one be “fair and impartial” and “seek out a variety of voices”, when you have transformed Fox News into the opposition party of the President of the United States?

The entire event that brought about the need for this memo is that a producer literally cheer-led a Teabagger crowd. Had that video not emerged, she would still have her job.

Anyone who recalls Fox News Channel circa 2002-2003, especially, knows damn well they cheerlead for one cause over another.

Can't wait until Abram's memo is uncovered reminding his staff "that they need more than 3 dozen viewers at any given time" would be helpful for msnbc. Some things to try might be actually telling the truth, actually covering news events as legitimate stories, even if they are negative toward the president and maybe we could have wall-to-wall worst person of the moment because that strategy is really working out well for the espn guy.

I'm still trying to figure out what proudconservative is proud of. He's been posting here for years, and seems to be impervious to reality, doesn't do much but post the exact opposite of reality on a regular basis to comfort himself.

We are there to chronicle the news, not create it.

So, the next time we create a phony grass roots teabaggin' rally, pretend like you just walked in on it.

This memo should be convincing to the Fox Faithful. See, it's right there in black & white, a memo that was accidentally leaked to the public. Just like Fox's reporting on non-stories. Why is nobody else reporting on them? They must be real stories.

Well I don't think proudconservative could really be a religious conservative, because pride is obviously a sin. Personally, I have never understood how someone could have pride in a political belief. It kind of suggests that his opinions are not based on evidence, but merely exist as some sort of loyalty or dogged determination to some ideal.

Let us not forget that WWE lost in the Monday Night ratings war against WCW every single monday night for 80-something consecutive weeks before Vince McMahon finally crushed them in the ratings bad enough to finally drive the price of WCW down enough to buy it, thus dissolving the competition once and for all from Turner. Ratings mean nothing, my friend, content does. And people are tired of fear (Beck), misinformation (O'Reilly), and lies (Hannity). They're also tired of racism (Beck, Limbaugh), so you can see why more people are finally turning away from MindFox. Besides, how many direct quotes and video clips, presented as evidence, that MindFox distorts, lies, and ginns up propeganda that they will eventually lose out because people would rather have a liberal media bias (only invented to counteract the vastly right-wing bias of ClusterFox) than lies as news?

True, but when conservatives claim to be an movement of morals, and pull this crap, it warrants special attention.

Besides, everyone knows true conservatism died when Bush 43 sold out this country to private contractors, when Reagan stirred up communism fears in 1960 (which, ironically enough, was paid for by G.E.), and when Newt Gingrich and pals shoved NAFTA down our throats.

I really dont understand how this can be rationalized. There is something called cognitive dissonance - where if your basic understanding of the world dramatically confront a contradicting reality, you are forced to alter some aspects of yourself or the situation in order to rectify the difference. In this situation, how do they rectify the difference? Does Bill Sammon simply not watch the program? I mean he can watch beck tonight and see how his letters runs so completely against the fabric of the fox media machine that they have built up around them working so meticulously to eliminate any area that may have challenged that balance that they have so hard tried to pretend was there. I cant even begin to understand how these people's minds work.

They also simply redefined journalism as having money to produce any stories that people will believe!!They don't know what a fact is ..they equate a belief or opinion to being substantive like hard facts would be.Using a few sources like far right websites and talk radio personalities as news sources ....like magic u have the

Media Matters for America is a Web-based, not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) progressive research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media.

Launched in May 2004, Media Matters for America put in place, for the first time, the means to systematically monitor a cross section of print, broadcast, cable, radio, and Internet media outlets for conservative misinformation news or commentary that is not accurate, reliable, or credible and that forwards the conservative agenda — every day, in real time.

Well it makes sense if from tennis' point of view conservatism is the only rational system of political beliefs. In that altered, freaked out, reality FOX & O'Really are very impartial.

      Fellow Matterers,

Chuckle, we doen(sic) need no stinking chuckle! (I got that from a movie: badges) Uproarious laughter, side splitting laughter, or fall-out laughing, is most appropriate, in this case.

Mr. Sammon says, '...of us...short period of time,..." That excludes the entrenched puppets, of course. He is saying, 'hide,' your malicious involvement. Fox is all about rancorous gossip. They do seek out a variety of voices, that use different words, to support the same ignorant views, that Fox promotes.

G.Beck is one ugly,(words), cheer-leading voice. O'Reilly jumps from side to side, never clear, to make it seem as his views are, 'Fair, and Balanced. Fox and Friends are no more than a group of high-school stuck-ups.

It is very funny, to think this memo is sincere.

      It be it,
      Ronin Kannushi.

Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly and sicko Glen Beck willfully use their high-profile position to lie and misrepresent every the President stand for and does. Each one of them has a problem with this black President.
You send out reporters to ambush people for interviews.

National City police said Monday that Juan Carlos Vera contacted his cousin, a police detective, to get advice on what to with information on possible human smuggling."

I would like to see us move from "It's Fox News, darn it," to it's Rupert Murdoch, darn it.

When are we going to take back our media and bring back ownership limits, and return to requiring responsible ownership/coverage?

Fox telling their staff to be 'fair' and 'impartial' is so horrible! Why, if they don't watch out, they could become as fair and impartial as Dan Rather was at CBS! They might even become like the NYT that won't even report stuff that doesn't fit their narrative!
(Has the Times reported why Congress voted to defund ACORN yet?)

Media Matters calls out for FOX on being biased and chopping up video by chopping up video of FOX shows...hows that for irony?

Once again media matters chops up a bunch of video to show that Fox is bias to promote their bias against conservatives.

MM must spend a fortune on video editing software b/c you guys are champs at it.

I'm sure you haven't bothered to look at any of the videos posted here before coming to that conclusion. Because if you had, you'd know that almost every video has about five minutes of the fox moron in question talking before whatever idiotic thing he said that was flagged by mediamattters.

Just because fox news is constantly chopping quotes doesn't mean everyone else does. So quit projecting.

FOX News to-do list based on recent internal memo.

      1. Fire everybody
      2. Close building
      3. Apologize to all of America

That is the only way they can redeem themselves for their conduct.
