Fooled again: How conservative bloggers got today's Afghanistan story wrong

September 22, 2009 5:05 pm ET by Oliver Willis

Writing about the recently leaked memo from General Stanley McChrystal about U.S. strategy in Afghanistan, Bill Roggio of The Long War Journal wrote this under the headline "McChrystal to resign if not given resources for Afghanistan":

According to McClatchy, military officers close to General McChrystal said he is prepared to resign if he isn't given sufficient resources (read "troops") to implement a change of direction in Afghanistan [emphasis mine]

The problem is, as noted by Mudville Gazette, what McClatchy actually wrote is this:

Three officers at the Pentagon and in Kabul told McClatchy that the McChrystal they know would resign before he'd stand behind a faltering policy that he thought would endanger his forces or the strategy [emphasis mine].

Which, as clear as day, is mighty different from the story Roggio published. As usual, this apparently did not stop conservative bloggers from doing the hard work of clicking the link to see the story for themselves. They took Roggio's misrepresentation as gospel.

HotAir, Q and O, Strata-Sphere, and Wizbang, amongst others, all once again demonstrated the rigorous distaste of reality that has come to characterize the conservative media.

What's the name of that condition when you only see what you want to see?

I dunno, but in the case of American conservatives, it is often accompanied by what Lewis Carroll described as an ability to believe "as many as six impossible things before breakfast."

False equivalence. It does happen to most people at some point in time, but it happens far more to those on the right. And in this story, it is evident in their behavior.

It's called projection when you see your own flaws in everyone else whether they suffer from the same flaws or not.

Additionally, it doesn't, in any way, excuse their behavior for you to assert that everyone suffers from it at times. I keep seeing that argument here - that others have done bad things too, that your opponents suffer from the same character flaws, like that somehow excuses your character flaws. Ever heard of "two wrongs don't make a right", or "If your friends jumped off a cliff, would you do it too?"

Seems back when the Bushies were in charge, and a newspaper leaked something to do with the war(s), they went around screaming traitor.

I am going to make it a point to watch Fox Noise for the next few days so I can count up how many times they tell me how treasonous this leak was.

I will report back in a few days with the number

By the way for all of you uninformed! Fox News is the most watched cable news now, why? Because all the other news is in the tank for Obama! Oh yea, when crazy Beck came over, what happened to their ratings? Gee, they went up even more! Here is an example, not 1 main stream media said anything about Van Jones, why is that? It worried me a communist is in our government and he is on record as just that! Just like some of those other nut cases around Obama.

So McChrystal would cut and run, and since he reports to Obama, the right-wing fecalsphere would hail him as a hero.

What is amazing, is how, 1st of all you will take this comment down once its posted or it will never make it up here.

Why is it that people can be so stupid, I won't stand up for Beck or others, time will tell. What I do know is Obama changes his story all the time and you Idiots go right along with it. What I do know is not only do the Democrats have to go, so do the republicans. Just like this racist crap if Obama didn't get the vote of whites he wouldn't be in the WH. Those same white see the whats going on! They speak out now and are called racists! I just have to say, you criticize these people, like any of you really know. Open your eye dummies, see whats going on! Even the media is tainted just like i see here!
