Journalists possess free will

September 23, 2009 9:32 am ET by Jamison Foser

Here's how Time's Amy Sullivan opens a Swampland post:

I don't want to write about John Edwards.

Yes, she does.  Here's how I know Sullivan wants to write about John Edwards: I'm reading a blog post she wrote about John Edwards.

Sullivan:

And yet here we are, nearly two years after the National Enquirer first reported he had an affair with a then-unnamed campaign staffer, and Edwards is still managing to keep his private screw-up in the headlines. According to the latest reports, the former Democratic politician is maybe, kinda, sorta considering publicly admitting that he is the father of Rielle Hunter's young daughter.

John Edwards isn't keeping his screw-up in the headlines.  Politicians don't write headlines.  Journalists write headlines.  Now, you can certainly argue that speculation that a former Democratic party Vice Presidential nominee is "maybe, kinda, sorta" considering admitting paternity is newsworthy.  But Sullivan doesn't want to do that.  She wants to write about John Edwards and pretend that it isn't her choice; that John Edwards is forcing her to by ... Well, by not doing much of anything at the moment.

Bull.  Sullivan chose to write about Edwards.

Well, there is new news about this because one of his former aides, the guy who previously announced he was the father of the baby, has supposedly released an outline of a book.

John Edwards is not doing this. He almost certainly didn't tell his aide to write a book, nor tell the publishing company to leak the outline. But this person says that Edwards is keeping his private (?) scandal in the headlines?

I really don't want to comment on this column, and yet long after Amy Sullivan could have wrapped up any thoughts or opinions she has about the Edwards' affair, the dearth of remarkable contemporary news stories is forcing her to pull down a paycheck by writing about old news.

Why write about Edwards when John Ensign and Mark Sanford are even MORE entertaining?

I don't want to write about rutabeggas, but I know their listening in on my phone calls and want to steal my roledex to sell to the highest bidder.
All this due to a nasty nitrogen addiction I'm sure.
I don't hate the rutabeggas, I just don't think there is a need to listen to them. Except by consenting professional vegtable theapists.

What happened to Edwards' is a shame. He was IMO the best big-name left-of-center candidate the Democrats had.

Edwards isn't even a politician any longer. He's a private citizen, who used to be a politician, and yeah, he has apparently done some bad things.

But of course, they LOVE to write about John Edwards for some reason.
