In article about GOP "hope," WSJ only quotes the GOP; omits key polling data

September 23, 2009 10:32 am ET by Eric Boehlert

It seems Republicans are optimistic about recapturing the New York governor's chair in 2010. They see "hope," reports the WSJ. And how does the WSJ know? Republicans said so, of course.

Number of Republicans quoted in article: 3

Number of Democrats quoted in article: 0

Even more awkward for the Journal is the fact that it left out any mention of the brand new polling results, which show Democrat Andrew Cuomo (and NY's AG) currently trouncing possible Republican rivals, if the election were held today:

The attorney general leads Giuliani by 52 percent to 39 percent and has a 66 percent to 16 percent win over Rick Lazio, the former congressman who on Tuesday formally announced his candidacy for the GOP nomination.

This is just another interpretation of 'fair and balanced'. See, they asked conservative Republicans, and really really conservative Republicans, so all viewpoints that matter to wealthy white land owning males were represented.

Cat...be honest now...did you really read the WSJ article? Or are just acting like Boehlert...casting around for something to write about?

The story was about Lazio announcing his bid for governor. They reported on the "hope" that the republicans can gain the governor's seat...by citing republicans...the logical place to find out about their "hope".

They were also clear about the challenges facing the GOP and Lazio in particular:

-- But the challenges are formidable. Republican party enrollment in the state has slid for more than 30 years. There are no statewide GOP office-holders currently. And the percentage of state residents who say they are Democrats and vote Democrat is rising...Mr. Lazio's popularity plummeted after he attacked Mrs. Clinton --

This is just filler material from Boehlert...a classic example of sitting around a picking nits for lack of anything better to do.

Yes, wesley, I have in fact read the WSJ article. A number of Republicans, including Mr. Lazio, are quoted. Mr. Giuliani is even mentioned, due to his strong name recognition and his handling of 9-11.

Do you suppose that the Republican choice for governor will be opposed in the polls? That the opposition will likely be from a Democrat? And, how many Democrats were quoted? None. And the polls that show Mr. Lazio having basically no shot against Andrew Cuomo? Conspicuously absent.

The entire piece leans to the right. Not surprising given Mr. Murdoch's ownership.

Well, the WSJ is owned by Fox News parent company, right?

I wonder if that will make a difference?

They are so used to their own "newspeak" that everything they read must be reversed to be true. So if reading the poll saying Cuomo is ahead, they will read it as Cuomo is behind.

They have told so many woppers that they can't see the truth when it comes up, taps them on the shoulders, yells in their ears, and bites them on the ass. There are many people institutionalized for far less.
