Breitbart walks back smear that "Community Organizers Pray TO President-Elect Obama"

September 29, 2009 3:38 pm ET by Media Matters staff

On September 29, Breitbart.tv embedded the following video with the headline "Shock Discovery: Community Organizers Pray TO President-Elect Obama." The video includes includes captions such as "Deliver Us Obama" and "Hear Our Cry Obama" suggesting that the crowd was "pray[ing] to" Obama.  However, Breitbart.tv later included a different version of the video without the captions and with an Editor's note acknowledging that "there is a debate over what is actually being said" and the crowd may in fact be saying "O God" rather than "Obama."

These are the captions in the video Breitbart originally embedded on his site:

Hear our cry Obama

Deliver us Obama

Later on September 29, Breitbart.tv posted the following Editor's note, underneath a longer version of the video that does not include the captions.

Editor's note: We've updated this post with the longer version of the original event. As you'll see in the comments and related links there is a debate over what is actually being said. Does the crowd say, "Hear our cry, Obama" and "Deliver us Obama?" Or are they saying "Oh God?" In the longer version the first two repetitions seem to have a distinct "uh" sound at the end that resonates as "Obama." The later repetitions are a little fuzzier. Did some of the religious leaders present become uneasy? Or was there a mix of what was being said? Read some of the blogger analysis below. What do you think?

Is "community organizer" the new stand-in for the n-word? I thought it was "radical."

The funny part of all this is that Breitbart probably thinks he is doing a public service.

Do conservative media types have nothing to do with their time?

No domestic issues to worry about, right?

All is well & happy in their recession-free, full-employment, full-health care coverage little world?

Their preconceived notions about what Obama supporters might do comes from several sources - Rush Limbaugh saying that we see Obama as a messiah, for one.

But any regular churchgoer should have recognized the recitations here as "oh God" said by people who are a little out of synch with one another at the beginning of the group activity.

Just another example of knee-jerk reactions by jerks.

Where are the Officials at FCC? How did former Pres. Bush manage to "shut" these people down as his loyal Opposers on tv & radio when he was in office? Maybe Media Matters and others should say outrageous things about sitting Republicans in Congress, and cash-in like everyone else have been doing? The year of America's Recession have opened up the 'say-any-thing' to make that hard earned dollar. Hmmm, what a disgrace indeed.

        Yeah,

This moroon is probably throwing out this garbage hoping Fake News, Lawnbutt and Drudge will pick it up and forward the smear.

He knows he has to come up with bigger and more ingenious lies if he wants Breitbart TV to become a powerhouse.

This is so silly. Suppose they actually ARE saying "Obama" -- what of it? They have a mock coffin and they're pretending to bury wealthcare. It's satire. Who takes that seriously?

What's next? If I conduct a street-theatre "surgery" with a mannequin and a t-bone steak, will Brietbart accuse me of practicing medicine without a license?

During the election "community-organizer" was equal to cleaning out toilets at McDonalds. Republicans did what they could to make it seem like that if you were a community organizer then you were a looser.

Everyone knows that community organizers don't pray to Obama. They get on their prayer mats and pray to the Leviathan in D.C. as all good collectivists do.

Granted, there's something absurd about the picture of "community organizers" praying to or otherwise worshiping Obama. But even if they are, what of it. Last I heard, we had freedom of religion in this country and Obamaism isn't any more ridiculous than the Moonies.

On second thought, Obama was famously a comunity organizer in the past. Perhaps this qualifies him to be the Patron Saint of Community Organizers and therefore worthy of prayers.

Can Media Matters get to the bottom of the evil that is Breitbart? He really does sound like a nasty guy with a chip on his shoulder. I also think that he's doing this mostly to make a lot of money.

Breitbart will be irrelevant soon enough, and he can go back to his bottom-of-the-barrel Hollywood gossip site.

That does it. I'm sick of working my ass off for 15 hours a day to live a meager middle class life like the rest of you suckers. There's obviously a huge market out there that will buy anything that spouts hate for democrats, no matter how false it is. Time to get busy on my website. So long, suckers!

BTW, I don't actually think Obama is an alien from outer space, but I'm afraid he might be. Did you ever see Men in Black? And wasn't a Democrat in office when aliens crashed in New Mexico? I dunno... sounds awfully fishy to me...

Wow, you're putting your stories in the form of questions, so, just like Fox, you must know what you are talking about!

This all started with a book called Chariots of the Gods? by Erich von Daniken. Every thing in the book was supposition and wildly stretched logic, but the book sold like crazy, even though the answer to the title's question was "Of course not."

Wow, this video must've been put together by those same folks who once heard a talking dolly say, "Islam is the light!"

My hearing isn't what it used to be, but great-googly-moogly, it is it really thard to tell the difference between "Obama" and "Oh, God"?
