Newsmax removes, runs away from coup-advocating column

September 30, 2009 12:38 pm ET by Terry Krepel

Yesterday, we highlighted a Newsmax column by John L. Perry essentially advocating a military coup to resolve the "Obama problem" (while, of course, claiming he was advocating no such thing). It's just the latest example of extreme right-wing rhetoric directed at President Obama.

Now, it appears that Newsmax has removed the column from its website; the link to it defaults to Perry's main column page. Fortunately, we made a copy.

As of this writing, Newsmax has posted no explanation or apology on its website -- arguably par for the course for Newsmax when it gets caught screwing up. But Media Matters has received the following statement from a Newsmax spokesperson:

In a blog posting to Newsmax John Perry wrote about a coup scenario involving the U.S. military. He clearly stated that he was not advocating such a scenario but simply describing one.

After several reader complaints, Newsmax wanted to insure that this article was not misinterpreted. It was removed after a short period after being posted.

Newsmax strongly believes in the principles of Constitutional government and would never advocate or insinuate any suggestion of an activity that would undermine our democracy or democratic institutions.

Mr. Perry served as a political appointee in the Carter administration in HUD and FEMA. He has no official relationship with Newsmax other than as an unpaid blogger.

Interesting that Newsmax makes a point of highlighting that Perry worked in the Carter administration, as if it somehow proves he's not really a right-wing nut. And its dismissal of Perry as nothing more than an "unpaid blogger" is a tad disingenous since Perry has been writing for Newsmax since 1999 and Perry's Newsmax bio touts how he "contributes a regular column to NewsMax.com."

Backing away are they. How could these clowns have not foreseen the firestorm that something as outrageous as Mr. Perry's column would generate. I suppose when one lives in a parallel universe one might not be conversant with the limits of civilized discourse.

Maybe Mr. Perry is only channeling disaffected military officers, he may know some and they may have these concerns, however, they would be violating their oaths of office if they are actually plotting against the President, even discussing it would be a crime-Mutiny. I am glad that NewsMax took the column down. I wonder what happened to Mr. Perry to send him so far to the right? By pointing out his Democratic connections, NewsMax is attempting to mainstream his attitude. I never want to see such seditious attitudes as mainstream.

Remember the report from the Dept of Homeland Security earlier this year about rightwing extremism and how it suggested that current and former military personnel might be recruited? And of course everyone on the right said that it could never happen, and that it was scandalous for the Obama Administration to have commissioned such a report (except it was a report started by the Bush Administration, not Obama). Now we see some evidence of why the DHS was scared by the rightwing extremists.

I lived overseas with the military for 10 years, my only source for TV was AFRTS and whatever they offered. I can tell you that there are some running feeds from CNN at the dinner hour, on the local channel, but the news channel was very, very heavy with Fox programs. And Rush is on the radio, too. Our service members can get The Stars and Stripes in most places, but The Stripes has very little when it comes to national news and almost no news from the state and local level, it is mostly a propaganda arm of the Department of Defense and concerned with military stories. Now, the average service member will listen to what is readily available, and if their only source is Fox, they will come away with a Fox view. If Fox keeps winding them up with wrong information and making them feel threatened, then they may become dangerous, because they never go to hear the other side.

fox and their horrible propaganda garbage gets a full 1/3 of current AFN TV "news" programming, to include crap like hannity, beck and o'reilly. In fact, as I posted at News Hounds, the AFN website actually features beck on it's program info. AFN radio broadcasts Limbaugh. Only very recently did the new editor at Stars and Stripes pull mAnne Coultergeist's worthless column. I've been fighting for years to get this right wing propaganda off of military channels. For the love of God and country, would everyone please write their elected officials, the Armed Forces Network and the branches of service to get this obviously partisan crap off the government airwaves?

How could anyone use the Constitution to justify the overthrow of our government?

      It's not even ironic -- it's insane.

"...no official relationship with Nesmax other than as an unpaid blogger."

And Tom Brady has "no official relationship" with the Patriots other than as their quarterback.

      Geez.

No no no, NewsMax. Too late. Remember MoveOn.org? And the video that some third party posted equating Bush with Hitler? Well, you've just stepped in the same pile, but you managed to get both feet dirty, and then stick them in your mouth.

If there was any truth to myth of a 'liberal media', if there were any justice in this world, you will spend the next year defending yourselves and backtracking and frantically trying anything you can in the way of damage control. But I won't hold my breath.

His column could be viewed as a crime. You have freedom of speech, but you aren't allowed to suggest an armed rebellion against the government.

This is why Newsmax is nervous...it's not the fact that it is ugly, intellectually dishonest and wrong...but that it could have consequences beyond MMFA's disapproval.

How sad is it that we are even discussing such a thing as this? We must get a hold of ourselves.

Yep. Newsmax is embarrassed that they got their hands caught in the cookie jar. If this had come from a fringe person on someplace like HuffPo or MoveOn during the Bush years, the Republicans would still be complaining about it. Hypocrisy much?
