Beck tells Newsmax:  "I fear a Reichstag moment"

September 30, 2009 12:45 pm ET by Media Matters staff

From a September 29 article on the conservative website Newsmax.com:

Media phenomenon Glenn Beck recently sat down with Newsmax for an exclusive interview offering his take on everything from President Obama, to the threat to talk radio and even a worry that our Constitutional government may disappear after a "Reichstag" event takes place.

[...]

Beck, who is also thriving on the radio, in bookstores and on the comedy circuit, sat down with Newsmax magazine's Editor in Chief Christopher Ruddy and voiced his concerns about a coming attack on talk radio.

But his real worry is that many Washington elitists really don't like our form of government and want to see it abolished.

"I fear a Reichstag moment," he said, referring to the 1933 burning of Germany's parliament building in Berlin that the Nazis blamed on communists and Hitler used as an excuse to suspend constitutional liberties and consolidate power.

"God forbid, another 9/11. Something that will turn this machine on, and power will be seized and voices will be silenced."

Previously:

Beck implores listeners to attend 9/12 rally because they "may be the only thing that stands between freedom and slavery"

Beck: "There is a coup going on ... it has been done through the guise of an election"

Beck's paranoia continues: "What they have to do is break my legs. What they have to do is silence me"

Beck says "the Germans" during Hitler's rise "were an awful lot like we are now"

Fer crying out loud. Why don't you just go and run and hide under your bed. You're such a sissy Glenn Beck. You're afraid of everything.

Given that Obama has done nothing, repeat, NOTHING to show that he doens't like your form of government, you're such an idiot.

And again, with the Nazi references? You're truly and utterly pathetic, and again, are basically calling for the "elimination" of this President, simply because you don't agree with his policies.

Go crawl back under your bed and weep yourself to sleep.

Ya mean 9/11 wasn't "a Reichstag moment"?!?!? I'm not saying that Bush cause 9/11 to occur, lefty blogger Alexander Cockburn says that Hitler didn't cause the Reichstag Fire either, but both Hitler and Bush were quick to follow up their respective crises with legislative action, the "Enabling Act" in the first case and the "Patriot Act" in the second.
What's that you say? The Patriot Act didn't result in dictatorship? Hey, I never claimed Bush was as competent as der Fuhrer was.

Shorter Glenn Beck: "I am scared all the time! And if you're not scared all the time, then you hate America!"

So, a rightwing columnist suggests a military coup is the answer, and it's Obama who's a threat to lead a coup?

He seems to fear a lot of things that are only possible in the sense that anything is possible. Although I don't really believe he fears them at all. He wants others to fear them though.

Maybe Beck has a point here. We should be on the lookout for people "blaming communists" or ignoring Constitutional liberties by convicting people without a trial through the use of edited illegal videotapes.

Oops, Glen. Was this supposed to be a private strategy session with Newsmax?

On an almost daily basis, Glenn Beck reiterates his fear of being "silenced." The sad part is he misses the point: On a daily basis, he reiterates his fear of being "silenced." If we are in the midst of a Reichstag, then it is the WORST. REICHSTAG. EVER!!!!!!!

I didn't even get past the first two words: "media phenomenon."

That's the best description of Beck I've seen yet. It puts him right where he belongs -- in the same category as Heidi and Spencer from The Hills.

Just saw the reference to Beck's success "on the comedy circuit."

Barkeep? I'll have an Irony, please. Make it a double.

I forgot that Beck was doing a comedy tour...

I am reminded of Jon Stewart's appearance on Crossfire, where Stewart said the media is hurting Americans...

      John Stewart on Crossfire.

As an interesting note, there was mention of soldiers refusing orders in Iraq, which reminded me of Fox's coverage of a soldier refusing orders because he wanted to see Obama's birth certificate.

Beck, who is also thriving on the radio, in bookstores and on the comedy circuit,

Therein lies the rub . . . Beck is a comedian. His schtick is the frightened, paranoid white guy with a gazillion conspiracy theories. His audience thinks he's telling them truth.

Beck had better fear his upcoming "Army-McCarthy Hearings" moment. You know, the moment when---after one outrageous action or statement too many---everyone starts treating him as irrelevant.

"Beck, who is also thriving on the radio, in bookstores and on the comedy circuit".

Folks - wake up!! Beck and Limbaugh rake in $m's per year. Limbaugh gets paid $45m by the Radio Network alone and Beck is not far behind him.

They will continue to be as outrageous as they can without risking arrest so they can continue with the ratings and raking in their millions.
