I don't think Michelle Malkin has any idea what "political payback" means

October 01, 2009 2:29 pm ET by Eric Boehlert

She was on Fox News last night, hating on the Chicago Olympic bid, going on and on about how Obama lobbying for the 2016 Games is really just "political payback" for Mayor Daley. If this were sane analysis, Malkin would be suggesting that Obama had benefited greatly in the past from Daley's political largess, and that lobbying on behalf of the Chicago Olympic bid was a way to repay Daley for the many political gifts he'd given Obama over the years.

But of course it's Michelle Malkin we're talking about, and she seems to have no idea what the political relationship between Daley and Obama has been over the years. Instead, by "political payback," and the all the talk of Chicago "cronies" and "corruption," what she's really saying is Obama is from Chicago and he knows political players there. Period.

If Malkin or anybody else at Fox News was the least bit interested in the facts (don't laugh!) about the Daley/Obama relationship, then they can turn to this 2008 Chicago Tribune blog post by David Medall [emphasis added]:

What's also true, however, is that through most of Obama's political career in Chicago he operated on the fringes of the political machine and never fully immersed himself in the belly of its operations. Obama's message of inclusion, his attention to the plight of the less fortunate, and his personal sense of morality--these aspects of Obama's character made him a favorite among reformers such as the former federal judge Abner Mikva and Cook County commissioner Forrest Claypool.

Even though he was a state legislator from the city, Obama made sure to maintain a safe distance from Mayor Richard M. Daley and his cronies. When Obama's wife, Michelle, told her husband that she was considering working in city hall, Obama waved yellow caution flags because he worried that Michelle was too straightforward and straight-talking for the backroom dealing of the Daley administration.

In my first extended interview with Obama in December 2003, I asked him to define his relationship with the mayor. Obama winced and paused before finally responding, "Cordial, not close." Since then, Obama has grown far chummier with Daley, but nothing more accurately sums up the ties between Obama and the vaunted Chicago Machine than his own words way back then: "Cordial, not close."

Here's Malkin on Fox News creating her own parallel universe narrative about Chicago politics.

Why let the facts get in the way, eh, Michelle...? You, too, Sean...

BTW, Sean, exactly how are you defining "reporting"? Conjecture, speculation and leaps of logic would seem more appropriate. Just my opinion, Sean...but I'm probably not the only who noticed.

I don't think Malkin has any idea what a lot of words mean. Words like journalism, integrity, honesty.

When I get the email screeds from people on the right, they often mention "Chicago", because all politicians from Chicago are dirty and Democrats.

Does this remind anyone of the blanket condemnations of ACORN? Or blacks in general?

This is why Jimmy Carter suggested that much of the hatred of Obama isn't based on political philosophical differences but rather on race. Conservatives just are too ignorant of reality to be reliable judges of events. They distort what Obama stands for, and so assume that he's a pal of Daley and therefore corrupt like ALL Chicago Democrats are, have been, and always will be in their eyes.

DD, it was one of the trigger phrases programmed into the wingnuts' mushy heads throughout the election year, and it's been pretty successful. You'll see righty posters here using terms like "Chicago politics" pretty often in place of any sort of facts or ideas.

I think we should understand the hypocrisy inherent at Faux "news".
      It's bizzaro world there.
When Faux says,"The sky is falling", the opposite is true.
Just like this clip, the exact opposite is happening.
Aren't there journalistic standards they are supposed to be following?

It is supposed to be freedom for ALL.

Malkin is brave to speak out against corruption.

It is sad that the mainstream media just talks about fluff.
I hope their ratings continue to go in the toilet.

The media wouldn't even TALK about the bad stuff in Chicago before the election. As usual, the end justifies the means.

Keep repeating your OBAMABOT MANTRA, "lies, lies, lies."

Are you SURE he promised hope and change?
It looks more like ROPE and CHAINS.

Are you actually saying that Obama is not doing this as payback???? Are you kidding? DO you actually believe that it is simple coincidence that Chicago was picked? Do you actually believe that Obama thought that Chicago would be the best place in america for the olympics????
        Wow you are nuts.
Michelle Malkin does often look at things from a singular perspective, however she is absolutely correct. Obama embarrassed himself and the country with this. If he wants to pay back his corrupt buddies let him do it on his own time...Right now he works for the American people and represents the Office of The President of the United States, not himself. He is spending our money on those TWO jets to go waste time over there. He is ignoring our wars, economy, and healtcare issues when he puts on his "Olympic" hat...
This article was a simple Ad Hominem attack on Malkin. She is absolutely correct and Obama looks like a buffoon.
