Politico: Obama loses if Chicago wins Olympic bid

October 02, 2009 9:21 am ET by Eric Boehlert

No joke. Because Politico is just a GOP bulletin board.

The insights come courtesy Kenneth Vogel [emphasis added]:

Much has been made of the potential international embarrassment and Republican attacks Obama might endure if the IOC rejects his pitch. Any such backlash would very likely have limited shelf life, but a successful outcome in Copenhagen could arm opponents with ammunition for more than six years, particularly if preparations for the Chicago Games were beset by the delays, cost overruns and controversies that have plagued Olympics past.

And just in case you missed the point, there's this:

National Republicans and local Chicago Olympics opponents have already signaled their desire to use Chicago’s bid and Obama’s connections to it to try to taint him. If Chicago wins, they’ll have plenty of opportunity, since the president and his hometown allies maintain strong political, personal and economic links to the effort.

Wow, could the RNC's Michael Steele have typed it up any better? First, the Politico article barely even contemplates the political ramifications for the GOP surrounding the unprecedented attempt by Republicans to aggressively root against an American city that's in the running for the Olympics. At Politico, that kind of ground-breaking, hyper-partisanship is of no interest.

Second, if Obama is successful in helping Chicago land the Games, it "could" arm opponents with ammo "if" preparations goes badly. But at Politico, the idea that preparations go smoothly, and that the Olympics could add to Obama's reputation, is barely even considered. Instead, the central angle examined here is how landing the Games would (will!) wound Obama.

UPDATED: Huge win for Obama today, right? After all, according to Politico, Obama would have been the political loser if Chicago got the Games. So doesn't that mean he's the winner since the Second City isn't celebrating today?

No one at Politico even thought this statement isn't jumping the shark, even in the slightest:

"the president’s own legacy will become inextricably intertwined with the fate of Chicago’s bid"

Really? His entire legacy over flying to Coppenhagen for 1 day to pitch a U.S. city for the Olympics? Good grief ...

Of course, mk3872. When you think of the Clinton years, isn't your first and last thought always the 1996 bombing of the Atlanta Olympics? Thusly argueth the wingnut gallery.

Another related but off topic thought. How often have you heard it said that Bush kept us safe after 9/11?

Why havent' we heard the same people saying that Obama kept us safe when they broke up the conspiracy to bomb NYC transit hubs with hydrogen peroxide and acetone?

Can one only 'save' us after he's dropped the ball, realized he should have been more on guard, and proceeded to go off the deep end by restricting his own citizen's rights in unprecedented ways?

On topic, I have no doubt that if we get the Olympics, we'll not stop hearing about any ripple in the waters of Lake Michigan.

National security - don't even go there. It's ALWAYS "good news for Republicans" no matter what. As I wrote once before about how the media portrays it...

Democratic president, terrorist attack: good news for Republicans, it shows Dems weak on national security, gives Republicans good chances to win next election.

Democratic president, no terrorist attack: good news for Republicans, it shows their previous policies were working, gives Republicans good chances to win next election.

Republican president, terrorist attack: good news for Republicans, it reinforces the need for Republican policies to make us safe again, gives Republicans good chances to win next election.

Republican president, no terrorist attack: good news for Republicans, it shows their policies are working, gives Republicans good chances to win next election.

This is the "thinking" of the corporate media, to prove that they are not "biased" in favor of liberals.

            A very cogent analysis.

You want to mess with a Bush lover? Remind them that Obama has kept us safe now longer then Bush did in his first term. By 20 days and couting so far. It's fun to watch them do the math in their head.

Right wing nut, tin foil hat brigade strategy session:

Dis' one of the greatest cities in the nation.

Campaign for it to lose bid to the penulitimate international sporting/culture bridging event.

Paint POTUS support of such bid for not only a great American City but HIS HOMETOWN as pure politics.

Craft positions so that if whether City wins or loses bid, POTUS loses.

Did I forget anything? Oh yeah, act like this is reasoned analysis rather than a transparent smear campaign.

"Obama loses if Chicago wins Olympic bid" is a true statement.

Mr. Obamanation has spent lots of policical capital in an effort to land these games, it will be a loss to him if the games go elsewhere. That are the facts.

The debate is how much bringing the games to Chicago would result in even more debt for the US and payoffs to his fellow Chicago thugs. That is the reason the Right is attacking this man's efforts on this matter.

As you stated, this article is "ground-breaking, hyper-partisanship is of no interest."

Let me get this straight. If Chicago gets the Olympics, Obama loses. That's a "true statement." And if Chicago doesn't get the Olympics, Obama also loses. Thats a "fact." All this in three short sentences.

        Seems you're rebelling against logic.

So the massive influx of tourism revenue will actually increase our national debt? Wingnut logic never ceases to amaze. Answer me this: why would cities across the globe compete for the ability to host the Olympics if it results in massive deficits?

        (Hint, it doesn't.)

How will the Olympics increase U.S. debt? Won't the international tourism be good for the economy? Isn't that the reason why people all want it in their own countries (if there's another reason, let me know).

        That are the facts.

EVERYTHING is a win for Republicans, always. No matter what. Chicago lost, so that shows that Obama failed. If Chicago would have won, every little perceived failure in it would be pinned on him.

Being a Republican is to have no history, no responsibility and no shame.

        Overheard at a family gathering last night;

Conservative relative (by marriage): Obama is really taking a risk. If Chicago doesn't get the Olympics, what does that say about his "clout"?
