Meet Rush in St. Louis?

October 05, 2009 8:54 pm ET by Karl Frisch

Almost six years to the day after radio host Rush Limbaugh resigned in disgrace from his brand-spanking new gig on ESPN's Sunday NFL Countdown for, as CNN reported at the time, "his statement that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb was overrated because the media wanted to see a black quarterback succeed," El Rushbo confirmed today that he's interested in buying the St. Louis Rams.

Seriously.

From KMOX News Radio in St. Louis:

Rush Limbaugh issues a statement confirming he's seeking to buy a stake in the St. Louis Rams.

Limbaugh is now responding to reports that he and Blues owner Dave Checketts are trying to buy the Rams:

"Dave and I are part of a bid to buy the Rams and we are continuing the process.   But I can say no more because of a confidentiality clause in our agreement with Goldman Sachs.   We cannot and will not talk about our partners.   But if we prevail we will be the operators of the team."

Marge Schott, eat your heart out.

UPDATE: This could get interesting.  According to an OpenSecrets.org review of Federal campaign contributions between 1989-2009, the Rams are the bluest team in the NFL giving 98% of its contributions to Democrats. (H/T to S.L.)

OK - I stuck with them when they stunk. I stuck with them when they paraded one clown after another back there at quarterback (Jim "Chris" Everett, anyone?) and I stuck with them when they left L.A.

I CANNOT and WILL NOT continue to support them if this ends up happening.

Cue Macaulay Culkin's Home Alone Face.

Is Roman Gabriel still with them? He was in the last time I watched a Rams game.

No, he's not. But I'm not sure they've had a competitive team since his era. Oh, there was that one Martz team in the 90s, Kurt Warner and the jailbreak offense.

I think it's fair to say "that one team" was far more than competitive.

And their Super Bowl win came under Vermeil, not Martz.

They DID reach the Super Bowl again in 2001, two years after they won it, under Martz. That was the "Tuck Rule" year that began the Patriots' dynasty. Since '01, they've had one winning season and 2 .500 years. I've never had more fun watching football than when I watched Warner run that offense from '01 to '03. Then the o-line started breaking down, Warner started getting banged up, and it was over.

It will be interesting to see what the NFL owners do about this. Most of them are conservative and Republican, but given the current rift between the so-called "true" Republicans and the wild right hate talkers, this could give us a small look at how one powerful group of conservatives views one member of the talkarrazzi.

The sale would have to be approved by the rest of the leaugue owners. Therefore, every NFL owner should be bombarded with letters and e-mails protesting Limbaugh's bid to purchase the Rams...if that occurs.

The NFL is very image conscious...so a few missives of protest to the Commissioner, Roger Goodell wouldn't hurt either.

I really think the NFL would take a lot of heat if they allowed Limbaugh to purchase a team. The last thing the NFL would like to see is political protests at their games...along with drunk, unruly fans fighting about Rush Limbaugh. This could be more explosive than it might appear.

Roger Goodell's wife, Jane Skinner does work for Fox News. And, she's got a weekly gig on the Billo show.

      Limbaugh - God No.

My Rams fandom will be in crisis.

Most NFL players are college educated. I dare say most of Rush's listeners aren't. How will the Rams players--especially the African American ones--respond if Limbaugh takes the reins of the team? You could see the greatest mutiny against a sports owner since Charles Comiskey.

Why do you guys always get your pantnes in a bunch over every little thing?

Is there really any harm in just reporting something? Putting aside their "parting Schott," the piece wasn't even all that liberally biased. (The McNabb, quote, fair enough but that is and will always be part of his legacy.)

What on earth is your problem with this? It's a interesting piece of news. WTF?

I love how MMFA neglects to finish rushes quote "There's a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit for the performance of his team that he didn't deserve. The defense carried this team."

Now taking that in context it is not racists at all. He is saying that the team specifically the defense (which is composed of many black players) is not getting the credit they deserve. So really he gave multiple back players complements by saying they were underrated.

Oh, B*llsh!t. He was not celebrating their vaunted defense of even saying that they're underrated. McNabb was only worth his comments because he's a black man playing a traditionally white man's position, and a high profile position on the team. Does that make McNabb a more interesting story? Sure it does. WAS he a bit overratted as a result? Perhaps. But to say what Rush did? Doesn't that take away from Michael Vick (OK bad example), or (more appropriately) Warren Moon? Or Randall Cunnigham? Or Doug Williams? There have been black quarterbacks before that have acheieved similar or greater levels of success and recognition. Is he saying they were overrated too?

Coming from that man, at that time, the comments amounted to a really stupid thing to say. Racist in and of themselves? No, probably not. But coming from a man with his level of racial enlightenment, and history of making similar comments? Yeah, it's pretty hard to swallow giving him the benefit of the doubt.

And you're addition to the end of the quote doesn't help him all that much.

            ---------------------------------------------------------------
In 1988 Isaha Thomas and Dennis Rodman said the same/reverse thing about Larry Bird: He's overrated becasue he's white. And you know what? That b*llsh!t too. I wodner what Rush thought about THOSE comments?
