NFL players' union opposes Limbaugh's bid for Rams, says football "overcomes division and rejects discrimination and hatred"

October 11, 2009 12:51 pm ET by Media Matters staff

From an October 11 ESPN.com article:

NFL Players Executive Director DeMaurice Smith on Saturday made a move to solidify the union against a bid by conservative talk show radio host Rush Limbaugh as part of a group that aims to purchase the St. Louis Rams.

In an e-mail to the union's executive committee on Saturday specifically addressing Limbaugh's bid, Smith said, "I've spoken to the Commissioner [Roger Goodell] and I understand that this ownership consideration is in the early stages. But sport in America is at its best when it unifies, gives all of us reason to cheer, and when it transcends. Our sport does exactly that when it overcomes division and rejects discrimination and hatred."

Limbaugh and St. Louis Blues owner Dave Checketts are among six potential ownership groups that have discussed buying the Rams. League sources say the current sale price has ranged from $700-to-$750 million but that there did not appear to be an imminent transaction.

On Sunday, Smith briefly elaborated, "This communication is more about what we stand for than the reality of our role in any franchise sale. While it's true the subject matter was related [to Limbaugh's bid], I do understand that the NFL does not present ownership bids to me or the NFLPA. I encourage our players to express their views."

At least seven NFL players have publicly opposed Limbaugh's interest in purchasing the Rams with Checketts. In Smith's communication Saturday with his executive committee, the union leader encouraged players to speak their mind on all matters, including Limbaugh's bid.

Rush Limbaugh thinks money is the Cure for all ills.
Perhaps Rush should work on his Racial Harmony Skills?
It's been said 'When Rush talks the Extreme Right Listens"
I'm surprised Mr. Limbaugh didn't factor in the NFL's Suspicion.

      Speak truth to power.

And the moment one white conservative player (and there are some)or owner comes to Limbaugh's defense the NFLPA's point will have been made...Limbaugh is divisive. And in the context of the NFL as a money-making machine, the NFL does not need to be a part of any politically divisive controversy. That defeats the purpose of sport serving as escapist entertainment.

Poor Boss Hogg. This adventure into having his own real-life Fantasy Football team is probably pretty important to the flabby old chair-moistener's self image as a model of manliness.

All that money and can't buy a team. Like that Twilight Zone episode with the librarian who breaks his glasses.

I always likened Rush to the character Gunther Lutze in the episode "Deaths-Head Revisited."

One of the differences between a great thinker/writer/entertainer like Rod Serling and a miserable one like Limbaugh is that the former's works live on. When Limbaugh goes, he'll be quickly forgotten.

Will St. Louis be awarded a Super Bowl win if they put forth a plan that excludes Lush from the ownership group?

I'm a novice in these matters--I cheer for the Detroit Lions, after all--but I'm pretty sure that St. Louis will be awarded a Super Bowl win only if they win enough games to make the playoffs, win every playoff game, and actually win the Super Bowl. I think that's how it works.

Limbaugh undoubtedly is attracted to the idea of owning a team because he thinks it means owning people.

Rush is opposed to the democrats way of doing things because he thinks it "Socialism."

He'd better get ready for another harsh reality...the NFL is nothing more than corporate socialism...or has he forgotten about revenue sharing?

NFL players' union says "overcomes division and rejects discrimination and hatred"

Really? I guess the NFLPA "forgot" that Olbermann broadcasts Sunday Night Football for the league - no shortage of division, discrimination and hatred spewed forth from that Neanderthal.

I'm for the buyout. Rush will not be running the day to day operations. People change and he can change as well. We have people that are prejudice the are black and white which isn't right. Maybe one thing could be a claus stating that he is a silent owner and he can not say or do anything as being a partner. The NFL has let individuals that are black and white come back and play football again. That including killing someone and dog fighting business which is also wrong. Michael Vick should have never come back after killing dogs and everything involved.
