Will Beck attack Fox News' Gingrich for citing Mao?

October 16, 2009 11:11 am ET by Jeremy Holden

Given his 60-minute rant attacking White House communications director Anita Dunn for pointing to Mao Zedong as one of her favorite political philosophers, it's worth asking: Does Glenn Beck know what his own guests have previously said?

A May 1995 Roll Call profile of then-Speaker of the House and current Fox News contributor Newt Gingrich reported:

While Gingrich, who made his reputation by attacking the ethics of fellow Members, did call the House a "personable place" where colleagues use "friendship to minimize friction," the overall theme of his remarks was downright martial.

Schools do a bad job of teaching students about Congress, said the former college history professor, because they emphasize lessons about how things get done, rather than how Members fight. The two houses of Congress, said Gingrich, are "arenas for conflict" where "we sublimate civil war to bring people together."

Gingrich even quoted a political leader not previously known to be one of his influences. "War is politics with blood; politics is war without blood," said the Speaker, citing the late Chinese Communist leader Mao Tse-tung. [Roll Call, 5/29/95 (accessed via Nexis)]

Gingrich regularly appears on Fox News' Hannity, The O'Reilly Factor, On the Record with Greta Van Susteren, and Fox News Sunday, and according to a search of the Nexis news database, he appeared on the February 3 edition of Beck's Fox News show.

Anyone care to try and wiggle Gingrich out of this and exonerate him?

Gingrich was using a bloodthirsty killer's quote to drive home the point of politics being rough.

Dunn was elevating Mao as one of her top Philosophers, to hs students, no less, as well as praising the virtues of his words.

Replace Hitler with Mao, in Gingrich and Dunn's speeches, and you can get away with Gingrich's, in that it still uses only the quote and drives the point, where Dunn's is very disturbing indeed.

The only difference is that most people don't know that Mao is as bad, or worse, than Hitler.

I don't think this is an endorsement. It's a quote that makes sense.

I was listening to Beck last night while trying to fall asleep when I heard him say something where he insinuated that we no longer teach about Mao because the liberals don't want us to know about him. He made it sound like it was the long thought out plot to the take over of America. Stop teaching about the atrocities of communism so that they can take control of America...

Glenn Beck is an idiot. Although I learned about Chairman Mao, as well as Stalin and the rest of them, I know that many people don't know who these people are, and it is not an issue of socialist indoctrination, but because teachers are forced to teach test questions rather then real information. Maybe I was lucky to have good teachers growing up and parents who encouraged education, but I have also had plenty of teachers who could not move onto the next chapter because of test preparations for mandated tests...

Glenn Beck is playing on people's ignorance of history to rewrite it in his favor. "You don't know about Chairman Mao??? Well let me tell you about him..." If that is how many Americans learn their history, through Glenn Beck, then I feel sorry for the future...

      You're kidding right?

Gingrich was using the quote of a bloodthirsty tyrant to get a point across about how tough/hard politics are.

Dunn put Mao on a platform as one of her top philosohers and was praising the the virtue of one of his sayings. BIG DIFFERENCE!

I would love to see you find ONE serious conservative that would both put Mao on a pedestal, nevermind do it to a bunch of HS students.

      Unreal!

The difference between what Gingrich said and what Dunn said is patently obvious. Gingrich quoted Mao to make a point regarding the conduct of politics. Dunn claimed Mao as one of her favorite political philosophers.
