Beck (!) says McCarthy was a "nightmare" because he "made cries of communism a joke"

Beck (!) says McCarthy was a "nightmare" because he "made cries of communism a joke"

Given Glenn Beck's one-man crusade to root out communism in the Obama administration, a crusade which most recently led him to spend a whole show attacking Anita Dunn because she once cited Mao has a "favorite political philosopher," and which targeted Van Jones, and which led him to claim that "the president has an agenda that is radical, revolutionary, and in some cases, Marxist," and which most amusingly has led him to look for signs of Marxism and fascism in the artwork of Rockefeller Center (which also houses Fox News)...

Given this long history fomenting fear about communism, one might expect Beck to idolize or romanticize trailblazer Joseph McCarthy.

But in his 2003 book The Real America, Beck writes:

One of the worst things that ever happened to America was Joseph McCarthy-and not for the reasons that everybody else thinks that Joseph McCarthy was a nightmare. I give you that Joseph McCarthy was an out-and-out nightmare for all the reasons everybody thinks, but it goes much deeper than that.

Joseph McCarthy made cries of communism a joke. He makes the cries of socialism a joke. Nowadays when you say, "Um, you know, So-and-So is a Socialist," everybody laughs. It's like calling someone a witch, or a pirate. It just doesn't have any meaning anymore. "Oh no, he's a Socialist! So what?"

In the same way, Al Sharpton makes cries of racism a joke.

Keep it up, Al. You really want to hurt the cause of the African-Americans? Keep crying racism, because nobody will pay attention to you.

When they hear it, it will become a joke, and they will laugh. Quite honestly, Al, the way they're laughing at your hair now.

So Joseph McCarthy had his witch-hunt in the 1950s, and he tried to find all the Socialists, all the commies, all the pinkos, and you know what? Some of them really existed. But the lasting repercussion of this is that nobody is afraid of socialism, nobody thinks communism is a bad thing. (pp. 114-115)

Got that?

Beck is accusing McCarthy of making the "cries" of communism and socialism a "joke."

Moreover, Beck says that the "lasting repercussion" of McCarthy's "witch-hunt" is that "nobody is afraid of socialism, nobody thinks communism is a bad thing."

Priceless.

I'm sure everyone getting accused of being a communist was hysterically laughing when they were brought before the HUAC... Yeah getting black listed was a fun thing.

No one laughed when they faced HUAC, but for those who don't realize it, HUAC was in the House of Representatives, and McCarthy was not part of it, as he was a Senator. (You may be very aware of this fact, but some others may not.) And HUAC survived into the mid-70s!

You just have to wonder how Beck even makes it out of the house most days. "Oh no, it's those socialists-communists-liberals again!"

Then again, imaginary straw men can look mighty scary.

          Stupid can be explained away.

          Beckerhead cannot.

The McCarthey era is one of the darkest in our country's history. Invoking it in this matter is beyond irresponsible. This is really, really, really getting out of hand.

That's because there are so few actual real socialists and or communists in this country that it is indeed a joke. Until commies or socialists become a united major political party, Glenn and his bed wetting buddies ought to just forget about that.

And yes, they all sound like McCarthy.

I don't know people! I'm a liberal who wanted to see HRC win the WH, but was content with second best with high hopes of change that just isn't happening yet. I'm open minded as well, reading and listening to all the news oulets for balance and I have to tell you, I am worried about some of the ppl Obama has surrounded himself with. Dunn may or may not be one - I'll have to do my own research on her, but Beck hasn't been wrong yet and where I sit...I despise a radically progressive platform that might lead to what Dunn may have mistakenly projected. I hope it was a mistake!

Seriously, how completely batguano insane does one of his proclamations need to be before his supporters finally go "Ummmm... what???" and lose interest?

I mean, sweet Moses. That may well be the single dumbest thing I've ever heard.

Maybe people laugh about calling someone a socialist or communist because there is nothing inherantly wrong with those things and you sound like an idiot when you act like there is?

Um, no, Glenn. Your racism is not a joke. It is real. And it isn't very funny.

Does Glenn Beck use the U.S. Post Office? If he does, then he is supporting one of those socialist institutions that he despises so much...

People like Glenn Beck only understand the word "communism" but not the actual economic system. I don't agree with the tenets of communism, but I don't see anything wrong with the freedom for one to express such beliefs, or to believe in certain aspects. I guess the problem with Glenn Beck is that he is self righteous and judges everything as beneath him and his values.

If you are not a Glenn Beck capitalist, you must be a Marxist or communist. Does Glenn Beck even know the difference between Marxism and communism? Here is an interesting website.

Socialists care about things being FAIR.
They don't want opportunities to be fair, they want OUTCOMES to be fair.
Which are of course, NOT FAIR.
Expecting outcomes to be fair no matter the effort or behaviors is patently UNFAIR.

Communist/Socialist economics have been road tested... they fail.
Communism/Socialism as political machines have murdered, more persons in the last 100 years than all of the wars in all of mankind's history. America does not need a genocidal government that Socialism/Communism is so adept at providing.

To know there are liars in the White House of whom the average American does not know are Socialist or Communist, and not report on it, is EXTREME MALPRACTICE on the part of the MSM. If non-journalists like Glenn Beck do not report on this... WHO WILL?

Glenn, you are absolutely right, and McCarthy's punch line status was only because your hero, W.Cleon Skousen was a little known whackjob, refuted by the FBI every time he tried to claim his fame as an anti-communist. But, if you're not careful, you will run the risk of outshining them both with your malicious goofiness. I am quite sure that your name will surplant that of the long-dreaded Father Coughlin for the next generation or two. All that is left to ponder is, how long will your fall from grace take, and who or what will be the ultimate cause of the fall?

      Beck is the stupidity czar...

BTW, in what subject is Beck's masters degree? History? Poltical science? Sciology? Oh, wait...he never even went to college.

Beck is a know-it-all who really only knows just enough to expose how little he actually knows. He's still nothing but a zoo radio morning shock jock...with a good line of BS for gullible suckers.

At least he is admitting that McCarthy was a lying SOB. For the past ten years, the Republicans have been trying to push the idea that McCarthy was 100% correct and that everybody he ever accused of Communist treason was a traitor, including George Marshall, Ike, and Truman. The Venona records do not come close to backing him up, but facts have never stopped them from saying stuff like that.
