Buchanan: "Traditional Americans are losing their nation"

October 20, 2009 12:48 pm ET by Media Matters staff

From Pat Buchanan's October 20 WorldNetDaily "Commentary":

Progressives are the folks who, in the 1960s, could easily understand that urban riots that took scores of lives and destroyed billions in property were an inevitable reaction to racism, poverty and despair. They could empathize with the rage of campus radicals who burned down the ROTC building and bombed the Pentagon.

The "dirty, immoral war in Vietnam" explains why the "finest generation we have ever produced" is behaving like this, they said. We must deal with the "root causes" of social disorder.

Yet, they cannot comprehend what would motivate Middle America to distrust its government, for it surely does, as Ron Brownstein reports in the National Journal:

"Whites are not only more anxious, but also more alienated. Big majorities of whites say the past year's turmoil has diminished their confidence in government, corporations and the financial industry. ... Asked which institution they trust most to make economic decisions in their interest, a plurality of whites older than 30 pick 'none' - a grim statement."

Is all this due to Obama's race?

Even Obama laughs at that. As he told David Letterman, I was already black by the time I was elected. And he not only got a higher share of the white vote than Kerry or Gore, a third of white voters, who said in August 2008 that race was an important consideration in voting, said they were going to vote for Obama.

With black voters going 24 to 1 for Obama, he almost surely won more votes than he lost because of his race.

By, "traditional" Americans Pat, you mean old white guys like yourself right?

Let me help you out a little bit Pat. There are no "traditional" Americans. We've always been a melting pot of different people, and different cultures, and you now feel threatened, because white guys are on the cusp of not being the majority in the US anymore.

But, still, go back, look at the power structures of companies, government, and other entities that really run the country, and overwhelmingly, they're still white, and male.

So don't go hiding underneath your desk yet Pat, you're still good to go for a long time.

"Traditional" Americans started cyring about losing "their" nation the second slaverly stopped, blacks were allowed to learn how to read and vote.

Then these "Traditional" Americans starting complaining about the Irish, then the Jews and then the Latinos.

Then these "Traditional" Americans really started to lose their minds when their "Tradition" children had to go to school with black children.

And "Traditional" Americans wimpered about women rights and then came the gays- and oh boy "Traditiona" Americans thought the country was going to hell

So there you have it "Traditional" Americans have ALWAYS hated change

"With black voters going 24 to 1 for Obama, he almost surely won more votes than he lost because of his race."

This seems to imply that blacks voted for Obama because he was black but I call bs on that. Besides the fact that black voters always go big for the Dem candidate I think blacks as a voting group have shown themselves much more capable of casting thoughtful votes than many whites. They tend to vote Democratic because it is in their interest to vote that way. On the other hand many whites who would benefit from Democratic policies vote against they're own interests when the Republican candidates start screaming about abortion or socialism or whatever. Obama's race may not have hurt him too much but I don't think it helped him any either. His policies (and 8 years of Bush's policies) are what got him elected. Let's hope he can implement some of them and not cave too much to the minority party.

Yeah, it seems to me that African-American voters have been very seriously dissed by Republicans over the last decade or so. They're just responding in a reasonable fashion. As J.C. Watts' dad put it: "A black man voting for a Republican is like a chicken votin' for Colonel Sanders!"

BTW, I thought the best response to this sort of "I want my country back" cry came from the Daily Show's "Senior Black Correspondent": "Nope. Too late. You've lost it. It's gone. We've got it now."

Tell me, considering the abysmal record of Democratic governing in inner cities (i.e., Chicago, Detroit, Baltimore, New Orleans, etc.), how have Democratic policies been beneficial to blacks?

By the way, kydem09, why do YOU think Stormfront.org linked to Pat's "Traditional Americans are losing their nation" commentary today?

First of all, 93 percent (give or take)of blacks vote Democrat, so that crap is nonsense.

Secondly, traditions change with each passing generation, YOUR generation is dying off and is being replaced with different generation who had different experiences and values. It's called the passage of time.

Okay. Can MSNBC fire this old racist now? What does he have to say? Will he have to leap onto the Whitehouse lawn with a burning cross before they get the message that this guy is toxic?

Why everyone should NOT listen to anything that good ole Pat has to say:

Pat. Buchanan has said that as he grew up, his family's heroes were Francisco Franco ("a Catholic savior")and Joseph McCarthy.

Then, of course, there is Buchanan's defense of Nazis, his praise for Hitler,, and his Holocaust revisionism.

"[Hitler was] an individual of great courage, a soldier's soldier... [and] a political organizer of the first rank." - Pat Buchanan

Despite his harsh pro-Vietnam War rhetoric, Pat Buchanan never served, in war or in peace. The reason why has always been murky - we've read or been emailed that he had flat feet, was wall eyed (the opposite of cross-eyed), or had an arthritic knee.

"Women are simply not endowed with the same measure of single-minded ambition and the will to succeed in the fiercely competitive world of Western capitalism." - Pat Buchanan

Do I really need to post anymore?

"With black voters going 24 to 1 for Obama, he almost surely won more votes than he lost because of his race."

So, Pat, you're saying that on any given election year wherein there are only white male candidates, they "almost surely win more votes than they lost because of their race"? STUPID comment, Pat.

What exactly is a "traditional" American? Are you limiting yourself to white, Irish Catholics? If so, then you just knocked this Cherokee/English/French/German/Iris/Basque Protestant American out of the running.

If tradition were so paramount, why would many of our forebears have moved here to begin with? Those who wanted to be "traditional" subjects of the crown stayed behind.
