You can prove anything with ratings -- as long as you don't have to provide the ratings

October 23, 2009 11:41 am ET by Jamison Foser

Here's Politico's Mike Allen, in his article about Fox boss Roger Ailes supposedly weighing a presidential campaign:

It was Ailes who recently held a private meeting with top White House adviser David Axelrod to ease tensions. The meeting was not a success.

Shortly after, the White House stepped up its attack on Fox - and Fox has proudly fired back.

Fox executives are relishing the public spat - so much so that virtually every on-air personality talks about it, and Sean Hannity has made it a central part of his show's promo.

The biggest reason: ratings at Fox are through the roof.

Allen doesn't provide any evidence that ratings are, in fact, "through the roof."  And as Eric noted this morning, it isn't actually true.

This is something you see often -- a reporter wants to justify the media's behavior, or suggest that politicians' criticism is backfiring, so they claim ratings are up.  But they don't actually provide the numbers.  They just assert it.  It's weird -- it's as if reporters think ratings are a matter of opinion, and you can just assert what you think must be happening.

Roger Ailes should be ashamed of himself.

Bill O'Reilly, How does this Sexual Fiend keep his job?
After the innocence of Andrea Mackris he did rob.
Mr. O'Reilly is a Pig & i wish i could shove a Nose Ring thru his Septum.
I hope someday "Bill-O the Clown" will end up in a State Prison where his Fellow Inmates can take the Full Measure of his Rectum.

Um... O'Reilly repeatedly sexually harassed an employee. That's a little different from a teacher advising a student to use protection if having sex. But you know that, don't you?

Jennings didn't do anything to anybody. He, as a young counselor, advised a young man of LEGAL AGE to protect himself if he had sex.

O'Reilly sexually harassed a female subordinate.

            False equivalency.

Hey look! I attacked FOX Propaganda, and my ratings are through the roof! Dang, that can be made to work for anybody, on any topic, so long as all who read/see the assertion are too lazy to check the facts for themselves.

(Hint: I have no ratings at all. :) )

Very much appreciated, Easy to refute wingnuts! I have, of course, returned the favor. By the way, did you hear what (confidential whispering) said about FOX Propaganda? (More conspiratorial whispering designed solely to drive the paranoid conspiracy theorists who have control of that network nuts...)

I heard that just the other day. Some say that (obscure individual) wrote (out-of-context quote containing reference to generally reviled celebrity) making me (vast emotional over-reaction) and wondering why (authoritative body) hasn't (corrective and punitive action). Be sure to watch (whenever, it'll be on 24/7 as the latest cause celebre) as (uninformative, misleading opinion/rumor show) investigates and uncovers (obscure individual) ties to (generally reviled activist group) and how it could negatively impact your kids' future.

The numbers are in: Obama's approval ratings have gone through the roof since he began focusing on eradicating purposeful ignorance from Fox News viewers.

No surprises here.... Fox consistently makes up stories without facts to back them up.

They need to change their motto to We Distort, You Comply!
