$4.97? Still seems high.

October 28, 2009 1:54 pm ET by Jamison Foser

Ever wonder how so many right-wing books become "bestsellers"?  This may help explain it:

Normally you have to wait until the public displays pretty strong disinterest in a book before you can pick up the hardcover for $4.97.  But thanks to Richard Scaife's right-wing Newsmax.com, you can get Sarah Palin's book for that low price -- and it hasn't even been released yet.

Just keep this in mind if the media starts breathlessly reporting Palin's strong sales numbers.

But does it have her own illustrations? Dot-to-dot, that is.

If that were only true I would buy the freakin' book just for entertainment value.

What Media Matters fails to point out, is that you can only get the book for that price - or free - if you take it along with a one-year subscription of Newsmax Magazine at a total cost of $49.95. This is clearly noted in the email Newsmax sent out:

I'll buy the book, as long as $4.97 package also includes all of time that I would waste reading the book.

The NYT notes bulk sales but the media won't note that. I'm sure it will be written at a 6th grade level, per usual with conservative books.

If she can get up to a 6th-grade level this will be a giant leap for conservatives...

She'll be the new intellectual leader of the conservative party.

That explains so much. I figured within a few months some of these books were in the dollar bins but I never even thought about websites selling them so cheaply and eating part of the cost.

Happens a lot actually. More times than not, with conservative books.

For example, was at a bookstore this weekend and saw Glenn Beck's "bestselling" book on the shelf, still in hardcover, still on the bestseller list, price reduced, 75% as the sticker said on the cover.

Now, if a book is a bestseller, why would it be reduced 75%?

You must not darken the doors of Barnes & Noble much then. Most books of a political nature have a very short shelf life. B&N will slash the price within the month om every political hack of the month book just to move product off the shelves.

I don't have the time to read Palin's book, because I regularly read newspapers and magazines. Which ones, you ask? All of 'em; any of 'em that have been in front of me all these years.

Want to read an actually good book?

Just finished off Jon Krakauer's tome on the death of Pat Tillman (former NFL star turned Army Ranger). And it's really good.

Where Men Win Glory - The Odyssey of Pat Tillman

      I recommend it.

And if you're in the market for fiction, just finished off The Road by Cormac McCarthy (another favorite author of mine), and if you haven't read it, check it out. It's worth it as well, especially with the movie coming out shortly.

Have to give a thumbs up to Krakauer. I've read Into Thin Air and Into The Wild, Haven't had a chance to read his latest yet.

Pat Conroy's latest South of Broad was very good. If you're a history buff, two of Stephen Sears offerings, Landscape Turned Red and Gettysburg will give you more insight into not only the battles but also the political front at the time.

Mag, I lived in El Paso for three years and actually bumped into McCarthy in a local mom and pop bookstore in Old Mesilla. Very nice man.

Maybe you heard about the lawsuit against Eagle/Regnery that was ultimately dismissed but still interesting:

This is what I was afraid of:

Palin comes out with a big book, probably be a best seller, and then I'm almost certain we're going to see a Palin - Roger Ailes ticket in 2012.

The dems had better keep on top of this, because this ticket could be formidable.

I had an e-mail subscription from NewsMax (that, for some reason, they dropped unexpectedly - on my part) and they often had 'offers' of various books and other merchandise. Here's a few clips from the archive:

Well, the only desert camo hat worn by our troops was worn by the Marine Corps, and they don't allow people to print their camo pattern (MARPAT DESERT), USMC use only. So, chances are good, it's not the right pattern or camo (you can tell if it's the USMC pattern if the Globe and Anchor is embedded into the pattern).

The Army doesn't use a desert camo, they use what's called UCP (Uniform Camo Pattern) that is a general use pattern, you've seen it, it's the pixelated pattern on all Army Combat Uniforms currently being worn (ACUs).

So, they can't even get that stuff right.
